| Resignation Trap: For a good article about Herman Steiner, try this: http://www.chessdryad.com/articles/... Also note that there is only one "n" in his first name. |

| iron maiden: <Resignation Trap> I think you're right; every spelling I've seen gives his first name just one "n". Unlike most American GM's, he spent most of his time on the West Coast rather than in New York. His chess club in L.A. attracted a handful of Hollywood actors and directors, or so I've read. |

| kostich in time: Stiener was in fact quite the celebrity in Hollywood...Bogart and Boyer, among others, hung out at his club, and he organized the 1945 "Pan-American championship" in Hollywood. I once saw apicture of him introducing an amused Clark Gable to Max Euwe and Sammy Reshevsky. He also lost a game with "living pieces"-all Hollywood starlets-to Capablanca |

| kostich in time: Btw..there seems to be an error here..is chessbase really sure that those games from Lodz1938 were played by HERMAN Stiener?
There were also an LAJOS Stiener, and an ANDRE Stiener(no relation to Herman)who were brothers-and strong European masters. In fact, Im almost certain it was Lajos who played at Lodz. According to what few sources Ive seen, Stiener didnt play outside the US between 1931 and 1945 |

| sneaky pete: Herman Steiner moved to the USA before 1928. The 1938 Lodz games were played by Lajos Steiner, the 1928 Budapest games (attributed here to Herman) by Andreas (=Endre) Steiner, according to Feenstra Kuiper's "Hundert Jahre Schachturniere". |

| cu8sfan: <WTHarvey> I just want to say thanks for the incredible amount of work you do every day for all the players of the day! You really seem like a scarab, assiduously rolling up what great players have emitted. (-: |

| WTHarvey: <cu8sfan> Much obliged! It's gratifying to see how much following some of the 19th century chessplayers still have, the Olland and Judd puzzles drew a LOT of visitors over the last week. Too bad many of their games are missing. |

Something’s up, quite certain. |

| Petrosianic: Steiner was an IM, but that was back in the days when IM meant something. Amazing how few of his games are here. There's only one or two games from his 1948 win in the database. Another database has almost all of them, but without round numbers. I've got the Chess Life & Review 1933-1975 set on order, hopefully I can get some more information on those pre-1950 US Championships other than just the crosstables. |
