The Warsaw 1935 and Stockholm 1937 Olympiads don't count as overseas appearances?

Phony Benoni: I just submmitted this game to the database:

I enjoyed the power and efficiency of Black's play, even if White may have made it a bit easy for him. 17...b5 is startling at first glance, but 18.Qxb5 gets zwischenzugged by 18...Nd4 19.Qd3 Nxf3+ 20.Qxf3 Ne5, when White must give up the exchange by 21.Rxe5 to save his bishop.

al wazir: The <CG> database has six games between Jacobo and Julio, all ending in draws, none over thirty moves. Draw your own conclusions.

Are there any examples of IM or GM chessplayers whose children were also strong players? If not, that seems to argue that exceptional ability at chess is *not* genetically determined.

Caissanist: I remember that IM Boris M Kogan had a son Michael Kogan who was one of the USA's top juniors in the 1980s. Michael gave up the game while still a teenager, though, and never got an international title.

Sibling rivalry seems to nurture strong chessplayers much better than the parent-child dynamic. There have been far more sibling pairs of titled players than parent/child ones.

Sep-04-07   wolfmaster: The Polgar sisters, obviously!
