Jul-19-04   molinov: Now that Fischer is in trouble I remembered that Quinteros was suspended for playing in South Africa.I think he was suppose to stop playing tournaments for a year or two but he quit chess altogether.
Jul-19-04   molinov: After a while he made sudden appearences in some tournaments. I think that now he is retired

Joshka: <molinov> He has an ICC account, in fact I remember breaking the news to him about Bobby getting busted in Japan...

Sep-19-05   GreenCastle: As I understand it, 2...Qc7 in the Sicilian is known as the Quinteros Variation.

Topalov: Argentinean Miguel Quinteros, but he is not so successful as a chess player.

Benzol: I believe his wife was a former Miss Argentina. He played in NZ a few years ago and his wife was with him. Quite an attractive lady if I remember rightly. He finished 1st in the tournament and he's a GM so he can't be too bad as a player either.

Chessbase: Who is the best chess player amongst the grandmasters in the world today?

Miguel Quinteros: Bulgarian Veselin Topalov, but he is not so successful with women as I am (haha).

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> he played simuls here -he was/is? a very good looking man, very polite and "debonair" - he won fairly easily against me in the simul! That game v Fischer he lost (English opening) is incredible.

I just picked up a book about Fischer "Fischer the Wandering King" by a couple of Dutch authors..it was a docu in Holland - quite interesting - got it (by chance on special) for $7 at The Warehouse in Pakuranga. Lol.

Benzol: <Richard> Must have been great to have played Quinteros in a simul.

When do Tony and Stan head down to Wanganui? My brother-in-law's elder brother is helping with the directing of the tournament. As he's just recovering from major heart surgery I hope it won't be too much of a strain.

Jonathan Sarfati: Quinteros visited Wellington in 1978 and won the GM tourney there very convincingly ahead of Torre. He was married to Benji, a Philipina IIRC.

Quinteros was kind enough to play me one on one when I was a kid of 13. He played the unsound Salvio Gambit and I happened to know the refutation, but he got his revenge easily the second game.

  Benzol: <Jonathan> If I remember correctly the Salvio Gambit runs 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Bc4 g4 5.Ne5 Qh4+ 6.Kf1 but I'm unaware of the refutation. What happens next?

Jonathan Sarfati: <Benzol> That's right. 6...Nc6 is regarded as the strongest, and White comes under devastating attack in all lines. IIRC he said, "That's theoretical, no?"

  Benzol: <Jonathan> Thanks for that.
Dec-28-07   stonebrain2006: See game 456. Quinteros 1/2 Kasparov 1/2 Moscow, 1982.
Dec-28-07   stonebrain2006: Certainly, Mr. Quinteros was not a beginner.
See:
Quinteros 1/2 Karpov 1/2 Wien open, 1986
Quinteros 1/2 Smyslov 1/2,1986.
Dec-28-07   stonebrain2006: A game worth looking is:
Quinteros 1 Tigran Petrosian 0, Buenos Aires, 1979.
The former world champion thoroughly trashed by the Argentinian playboy in a Catalan!
