62nd US Open
San Francisco, California
August 14-26, 1961
After a couple of close calls, Pal Benko won his first of eight US Open titles in commanding fashion, winning his last four games instead of coasting to the finish. Fellow Hungarian transplant Zoltan Kovacs, currently resident in Los Angeles, took second place, with former champions Arthur Bisguier and Robert Byrne tying for 3rd-4th. This was the largest US Open to date, almost cracking the 200-player barrier. Source: (with round schedule and crosstable): Game Collection: US Open 1961, San Francisco, made by User: Phony Benoni.
