chessgames.com: Were there two players named Lothar Schmid? We have these pre-1900 games, and also this player record Lothar Schmid who played from 1863-1893.

Or is this all confusion with Carl Friedrich Schmid ?

Jul-14-03  Larsker: It's a common name in German-speaking countries. A bit like Larry Smith in USA.

I did a search on Goggle and only found the German GM who is still alive:

Honza Cervenka: The game with Chigorin was played almost certainly by Carl Friedrich Schmid

The game with Pillsbury was played by Louis Schmidt. See http://www.chessmetrics.com/PL/PL35... By the way, Louis Schmidt played also the game W Pollock vs Schmidt Erhard, 1893 and Schmidt Erhard vs Gossip, 1893 and Lothar Schmid vs Showalter, 1893

I don't know who was Schmidt Jan-Peter (I am not sure that his name is really Jan-Peter) but maybe it is the same player who played with Chigorin in period 1877-9.

Schmidt, who played against Anderssen (Lothar Schmid vs Adolf Anderssen, 1863 ), Zukertort (E Schmidt vs Zukertort, 1865 ) and R. Gottschall (It is not Herman von Gottschall.) was probably one person. I have found two other games played by this player, who could be quite strong chess amateur:

Jul-14-03  Ribeiro: The main referee of the Spassky-Fischer match was named Lothar Schmidt. He might have played some of the games.

Honza Cervenka: <Ribeiro> I think that the main referee of the Spassky-Fischer match was GM Lothar Schmid (without "t" in the end of surname).
Jul-15-03  Ribeiro: <Honza Cervenka> You are right! Thanks!:-)

An Englishman: Good Evening: Schmid also has his own variation, the Schmid Benoni, 1.d4,c5; 2.d5,d6 with a delayed ...Nf6, sometimes putting the Knight on e7. I took a look at the database: seems that our chess player of the day was the only player who could handle it.
May-10-08  charliechaffka: amazing he played in the 19th Century!
May-10-08  jamesmaskell: Given that he was born in 1929, that indeed would be amazing...
May-10-08  whiteshark: Many happy returns GM Schmid!

  paulalbert: Happy Birthday, Lothar.

I had the privilege of breakfast with Lothar in NY several years ago, introduced by a girlhood lady friend of my wife ( school classmates in Stuttgart ) who was a publishing executive and knew Lothar from his publishing activities. Unfortunately, I've never been able to take up Lothar's invitation to come to Bamberg to see his gigantic chess book collection, possibly the largest in the world. Everytime we visit Germany, most of the time is visiting my wife's relatives and vacation spots preferred by my wife. As an enemy of chess, she would veto my suggestion to go to Bamberg so I could see chess books. Paul Albert

May-10-08  cannibal: It's his 80th birthday, so his birthyear 1929 in the profile is wrong. Oh yeah, happy birthday!

Quote of the day: <"PLAY NOW!">

May-10-08  karnak64: Much respect to you, sir, and many happy returns on your birthday.

Richard Taylor: Good on ya mate! All the best to you Lothar if you are there!

I heard about Mr Schmid's library.

He must be getting on now.

May-10-11  talisman: happy birthday Lothar...we are all indebted to you.
Jun-27-11  jahhaj: I'm looking for the score of the game between Schmid and Korchnoi that was played in 1980 as part of the BBC Master Game tournament. It doesn't seem to be be on this database. Can anyone help me?
Jun-27-11  parisattack: Where there more than one between them? Just thumbing I saw Schmid-Korchnoi Ruy 1-0 on time in book two of The Master Game.
