| May-25-08 | | virginmind: gm mecking has drawn yesterday with gm short, in first round at bazna "kings' tournament" - romania. on the romanian chess federation site there's an interview with mecking (taken by dinu ioan nicula on may 20th - only in romanian language) in which he says that in last year's edition he ranked so badly because he failed to go to the church in the first two days. but this year he is going to attend church daily, with his second, and that his second will pray for him in his room while mecking would play.
he said he plans to recover his former elo rating of 2635. he also said he didnt play in torino olympiad in 2006 for brazil team, because he didnt like the idea of playing at fourth table. he seems a very religious guy and he is convinced that Jesus will come back to earth in 5-10 years as there are more and more signs for that in brazil lately "and because he is my main supporter, the closer he is, the better i'll play!" http://www.frsah.ro/index.htm |

Fischer was afraid they might take his mind too and left the church. Mecking was also brainwashed by some cult related to the Roman Catholic Church. I found this in a former post on this forum. Mecking wrote on ICC, check it out:

The End of the Times is not the End of the World, is the end of the evil in the World, which will coincide to Jesus Return and the Triumph of the Holy Heart of Our Lady in the World. The End of the World will be another fact, after the End of the Times. The only chance that these things do not happen would be God putting it off, due to many people praying asking Him (read in the Bible, Jeremiah chapter 18, verses 7 until 10); if He does not postpone, these prophecies will happen soon. Our Lady told before Priest Gobbi, an Italian priest, that the End of the Times would happen until the year 2000; but God postponed it." |

During his match with Korchnoi he was outplayed by experience mostly and not the quality of the game. Wins 2 interzonals... Probably the best south american player ever, based on these results. |
