 | | HeMateMe: I've always thought the Menchik story could be an interesting movie. It has a lot of interesting angles--a talanted woman in a male profession, the backdrop of women's sufferage, and then WWII. But, chess movies don't do well at the box office, except for SFBF. Alekhine's story could also be a good movie. Such a bizarre character could interest the non chess players. A man without a country--russian, but not playing for russia, a detainee (collaborater?) during WWII, longtiime champion, unusual, distinctive style, talent, perhaps a womanizer, a thief, a creator of phony games, greatest blindfold player ever, travelled extensively, very poor loser--a lot of fun angles to work from. |

Feb-11-10 | | TheFocus: A good biography and collection of her games has yet to be done. I think the book by Bykova was never translated from Russian. |

Your film idea is great.
Given that Alekhine was a close friend and staunch admirer of Menchik, you could fold her story into his. Although I agree she is interesting enough for her own film. It's really too bad the general film going public does not care about chess. There isn't even a proper Bobby Fischer film.
<The Focus> - yes, I've been researching Menchik and there's virtually no detailed or reliable biographical information in English on the Web. |

It has many rare photos of her, and features music by Faure and Mahler. |

There is an <Alekhine> film that already exists, written by <Kotov>. I left the IMDB link on the Alekhine page. |

"This is the story about fourth world champion, magnificent Russian chess player Aleksander Alekhin. The true reflection of his entire life, immigration, fantastic matches vs. Max Euve, two his basically unsuccessful marriages and following loneliness, fight against alcohol abuse, difficult life under German occupation during WW2 and consequent death far from Russia where he always wanted to return to. Alekhin, the most brilliant Russian chess player, had such dramatic life that writer didn't need to tell something superfluous except facts to make novell more interesting. Everybody who likes true and dramatic stories should watch this movie." --from IMDB |

Jun-12-10 | | BobCrisp: <Early in 1943 Vera's husband died. She remained in the Clapham home and was joined by her mother and Olga. I am not sure when Olga was married, but she met her husband at Esperanto lessons and took the surname of Rubery. On 26th June 1944 the house was destroyed by a German bomb and all three perished. Vera was 38 years old, Olga 36 and their mother (also Olga) 59. This horrendous deed undoubtedly caused outrage all over the world and the columnist in the Sussex Daily News wrote in the edition of 18.7.1944: 'In the annals of chess history this black blot will remain for ever marked against the German nation, and must fill chess players of the future with repulsion and disgust.'> http://www.hastingschessclub.co.uk/...
Steady on. I don't think they were aiming at her deliberately. |
