 | | chessgames.com: By popular request: World Chess Championship Candidates (2014). |
|
| Feb-12-14 | | Kinghunt: Thank you <chessgames.com> for your detailed and thought-out response. I think tweaks to the algorithmic system would work very nicely, and definitely avoid the pitfalls of having human curators. It may be hard to say what weightings will give best results without some good old-fashioned trial and error, but it definitely seems like a viable yet simple solution to this problem. If you want any suggestions for the algorithmic weightings, I'm happy to help however I can, though I'm sure you don't need much help. Thanks again for the response, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! |

| Feb-12-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: Me too. I LIKE the Deluxe Viewer ... and have followed all the recommended steps to get it to work. But so far, nada. I am stumped and mystified. If there is something I am missing, I am hoping that ANYONE can enlighten me. |

It's impossible to give specific advice without knowing the details of your system (you haven't even told me if you use a Mac or Linux or some other kind of computer.) However, here are some general help for this kind of thing: • From time to time it may be necessary to revisit http://www.java.com/ and download the newest version, even if you already have the newest version. For example, Apple recently sent out an update of their OS which has a side effect of removing Java from your machine. Getting a new web browser may also require you to reacquire the plugin. • Use Java Help Page as a guide. There are some other Java troubleshooting pages on Chessgames which are at least partially out of date. • You must locate your Java Control Panel. If you can't find it, you will not be able to proceed. • Be certain that your Java security level is not on the highest setting. We recommend the middle setting. • Be very careful to type the Chessgames address exactly as shown, including the http:// part and the www. • It is possible that your browser has a general setting something like "Allow Java? (y/n)". If that is set to "no" then it will override all of the steps above. • It is possible that you have some kind of anti-virus software which is either interfering with Java or interferes with your configuration of the Java. Temporarily disabling such software is sometimes necessary to debug your situation. If none of the above helps please email us the details of your system (operating system, web browser) to chess@chessgames.com. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg: <Even if that method failed us, there are other tricks. For instance, we can tell when somebody just views a game, so we could keep track of which games are being viewed the most and sprinkle that into the formula.>> If you go that way, you may have to remember to exclude viewings from the Holiday Hunt periods, when all sorts or games are being viewed for certain non-kosher reasons, chessically speaking. ;) |

 | | chessgames.com: OK, here's an experiment based on some arbitrarily selected weightings to give newer games more clout. Old notable games for Magnus Carlsen Carlsen vs S Ernst, 2004
Carlsen vs H Harestad, 2003
J L Hammer vs Carlsen, 2003
Kramnik vs Carlsen, 2008
Carlsen vs A Groenn, 2005
Carlsen vs Aronian, 2008
Carlsen vs G Tallaksen Ostmoe, 2005
Carlsen vs H A Gretarsson, 2003
Carlsen vs Radjabov, 2008
New notable games for Magnus Carlsen Carlsen vs S Ernst, 2004
Carlsen vs H Harestad, 2003
Kramnik vs Carlsen, 2008
J L Hammer vs Carlsen, 2003
Carlsen vs Karjakin, 2013
Carlsen vs A Groenn, 2005
Carlsen vs Gelfand, 2013
Carlsen vs Aronian, 2008
Carlsen vs Anand, 2012
Anand vs Carlsen, 2013
Interesting. Not bad at all.
The sudden preponderance of 2013 games makes me wonder if I'm giving a bit too much weight to them, but it could be argued that recent games are automatically more notable. Some tweaking is obviously needed but I think it's clearly an improvement. Thanks to <Kinghunt> for bringing up this topic again. |

| Feb-12-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: I may have to e-mail you, I passed all of the steps above. |
|
| Feb-12-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: And one in my forum and three in my e-mail ... not the only one, apparently that cannot get the Deluxe viewer to work. |
|
| Feb-13-14 | | Kinghunt: <chessgames.com> Definitely a great improvement! It's now a fairly balanced mixture of early wunderkind games and more recent achievements. So whatever weights you're using at the top of the scale are probably fairly close to perfect. I do see your point about about perhaps an excess of 2013 games, though I'm not sure how much of a problem it is. It may be easier to judge if recent games are overweighted by looking at what the new algorithm spits out for other players, say Aronian, Kramnik, and Topalov. If their lists of games are more balanced through the last few years, it may not need any more tweaking. If it does seem more adjustments are necessary, maybe the weights could be moved a little bit closer together? For example, if this test system was 2014 games count for 3 points per collection, 2013 games count for 2.5 points each, etc., maybe try keeping 3 points for 2014 games, but go to 2.67 points for 2013 games, 2.33 points for 2012 games, etc. This should weight some of the 2010-2011-ish games a little higher, at the expense of the games at the bottom of the list, which are predominantly 2013 games. Anyway, thanks for implementing this so quickly. This current test list is definitely a huge improvement over the old list! |

| Feb-13-14 | | twinlark: Hi <ceegee>
There's a minor technical glitch in the Ivan Saric bio. The wikipedia url is not only not shortening to its usual display, but is showing the url in full. I assume it has something to do with the diacritics in Šarić's name that probably also appear in the url. Also, sorry if the Sax solution isn't your preferred, but I couldn't bear to unpick the bio to the extent it needed. My sewing hands are still cramped from the initial effort. |

 | | chessgames.com: <How could you omit Nakamura vs Carlsen, 2014?> If that game passes the test of time then it will no doubt end up in many game collections and climb the ranks of his notable games. Meanwhile go put it in a collection of your own and help give it a boost. <minor technical glitch> Thanks, I was able to get it working (more or less) with a horrible kluge. That should suffice until we fix the broken processing of Wikipedia URLs. Fixing that problem is high on the to-do list. <Also, sorry if the Sax solution isn't your preferred, but I couldn't bear to unpick the bio to the extent it needed.> It's not so much that it isn't preferred, it's just that we're not ready to accept such data. After some consideration, I think the best solution is to make not one but two fields, one for the biography proper and another for the footnotes/credits/citations. Not only would that provide a lot more room, but it would also allow us to treat citation text in a different manner than the main biography, which will become important when we have so many footnotes. |

| Feb-13-14 | | technical draw: I've tried everything in the world to get my Deluxe viewer to work. Nothing will make it work. I've read inputs from other forums and nothing. I tweaked and twiddled until I was at the edge of messing up my whole system and nothing worked. I entered areas of my Mac that I didn't even know existed made changes, tried it out and switched back when it didn't work. Nothing works. It's all over. We are doomed. |

 | | chessgames.com: <FSR> Ah, the famous "Immoral Game". Sorry, that kind of humor is a bit too blue for our standards. I guess now is a good time to mention, that we don't really like it when members make juvenile sexual innuendos on player names. You know we love to play word games, but at the same time we should always remember that these are real people. Pretend they were sitting right next to you: would you still make the joke? On a related note, I happen to maintain a secret list I call <Puns We Will Never Use>. Just to give you a tease, one of them is "Let's Talk about Sax." I hope I don't come across as sounding humorless, but I believe it's important to maintain standards. |
