HeMateMe: All fashion policing aside, the fans weren't shorted out of a good chess game.
Jul-02-12  DanielBryant: I nearly always wear shorts to summer tournaments. Comfort is more important than showing off, and I imagine I would feel the same way if I were a GM.

Sneaky: I saw GM Boris Gulko at a tournament in Florida once and I was quite pleased to see him wearing Birkenstock sandals.

And what is this? V Mikhalevski vs I Krush, 2012. Doesn't Irina know that she's not supposed to beat a GM from the Black side of the board? The Chessbookie leg's just started, and there goes my money :D

Jul-02-12  MarkFinan: Under the normal points scoring system Kovalyov and Mikhalevski would be joint second right now! And that chessbookie stung me too, especially with Short drawing his last game..
Jul-02-12  Shams: Short has won. Krush is a piece up in a simple ending.

And Nigel walks away with the hardware, as is proper. Congratulations to Gardner for the IM norm!

Jul-02-12  AgentRgent: And Irina does it! Way to go!
Jul-02-12  PhilFeeley: <Shams> I'm not sure it was such a simple ending. Black held on for a long time.

HeMateMe: Funny how chess is. Irina Krush pumelled Mikhalevski, who finished second, but she couldn't beat some of the lesser players.
Jul-03-12  Edmontonchessclub: The tournament is over!

We had an after-party (drinks paid by the Edmonton Chess Club) attended by all the GMs, IMs Krush and Piasetski, some of the local players plus Organizers (ahem) and spectators.

GM Short, GM Mikhalevski, IMs Krush and Piasetski have all said that they want to come back next year for the 8th Edmonton International...so that's a good sign for a first-time Organizer of this tourney.

I had to leave the dinner early to catch a plane to Arkansas (of all places), but luckily my girlfriend packed the WRONG PASSPORT so I have time to write this comment in the back of a taxi, trying to get my passport and get back to the airport in time... I love her, but it was the wrong passport! :)

Anyway, the tournament went as well as I could have hoped. I'll definitely be back next year, here on Chessgames.com for the 8th edition of this tournament. In the meantime, I'm sure I'll be commenting/arguing about the major tournaments posted here. See you then!

You have more than one passport? Who are you, James Bond?

Jul-03-12  Edmontonchessclub: <Shams>
Nooo, but another family member's passport was in the same place. Not her fault, I should have packed it myself, but I was so busy with the International tournament... Anyway, now I'm ina taxi back to the airport with the RIGHT passport.

Short, Krush and the others fly out tomorrow morning. I'm feeling very satisfied with the tournament overall.

HeMateMe: Are you heading to Little Rock to play some blitz with Bill Clinton? Bill played on the chess team at Georgetown University, Washington D.C.

If you're going to be in politics, you have to plan ahead, be accurate, and be sneaky. Certainly Clinton makes the cut...

Jul-03-12  Shams: If I've learned anything from the dozen John le Carre novels I've read, it's this: never travel with more than one passport.
Jul-03-12  Eyal: With ratings taken into account, the most impressive performance here was by Gardner. Here are the TPRs (compared with the actual ratings in square brackets) according to the TWIC report (http://chess.co.uk/twic/chessnews/e...):

Short 2586 [2705]
Mikhalevski 2512 [2519]
Kovalyov 2501 [2619]
Krush 2474 [2457]
Gardner 2465 [2202]
Porper 2441 [2414]
Wang 2285 [2307]
Pechenkin 2285 [2312]
Piasetski 2245 [2304]
Haessel 2207 [2161]

Jul-03-12  goodevans: Krush's win over Haessel is missing and hence she was 4th rather than 6th (as shown at the top of the page).

CG.com would you oblige, please.

  chessgames.com: <Nigel Short> Well done!

<goodevans> D Haessel vs I Krush, 2012 has been online since yesterday (and a fine game it is) but the one game missing from the official site seems to be Krush-Porper from the final round. We'll post it as soon as it becomes available.

Jul-03-12  Jim Bartle: Is that right, shams? When I've traveled to the US with my children, they've had to leave Peru with their Peruvian passports, and then enter the US with American passports.
Jul-03-12  Shams: <JB> You need a Peruvian passport to leave Peru? Wow.

I think Le Carre was talking about having multiple passports with different identities, like Jason Bourne.

Jul-03-12  Jim Bartle: No, no. Peruvians who live in Peru must enter and leave using Peruvian passports, even if they have a second one.

I see how passports with different identities could be a problem.

Jul-04-12  achieve: Sure, as July comes to us every year... And I have no problem adding June and August, if that's OK with you... ;)

Who wears Short shorts?
Short wears Short shorts!

HeMateMe: Nice story from CB. Wouldn't it be cool if the chess lectures could be a virtual event? You know, log on, and either your computer monitor or flat screen TV gives you a view of the stage, with audio?

Even better would be if you can adjust the camera angle to zoom, or take a panaramic view of the whole room.

I guess we'll have to wait until robot P.A.s are doing our shopping for us, at the grocery store.
