Aug-07-18  HeMateMe: <rogge: His name, you mean?>

No, mate. I meant his vas deferens.

Aug-07-18  JimNorCal: There are 31 games listed for Biel. Should be 30.

That's a sign of the extra MC vs Svidler game.

Aug-07-18  JustAnotherMaster: THE MORONS on this site deserve this site to be closed down LMAO HAHAHAHAHAAH hope it shuts down and you losers disappear and die

zanzibar: <JustAnotherMaster:> you mean morons like you? 'Cause that's the level of your comment.

Sokrates: Somehow this has become spooky. Will this site continue as a ghost site, with no person at the other end, only some digital automatons working ad perpetuam?
Aug-09-18  Clemens Scheitz: Are there any chances that you will make it to the pilot's cabin dear <Sokrates> ?
Premium Chessgames Member
  Sokrates: Dear <Clemens>,

I have just sent an email to the E address of CG, explaining the whole situation, asking them to give us a lifesign. I hope someone reads my mail and reacts. I have, of course, offered my assistance should they not know how to do it.

Unfortunately, I did not know the late Mr Freeman at all, less do I know any of his friends and family, so this is, alas, my only path to "the cockpit" (a well-fitting metaphor btw).

I sincerely hope someone is able to open Mr Freeman's mail account and see the mail.

Greetings to you, <Clemens> and to all friends of CG.

Sven, alias Sokrates

Sokrates: PS: the Wiki on CG mentions that the site has (or has had) a "close association with Raymon Keene", but I think it might be far fetched to contact Mr Keene on the issue. Unless any of you know Mr Keene, of course.
Aug-10-18  devere: <Sokrates: Somehow this has become spooky. Will this site continue as a ghost site, with no person at the other end, only some digital automatons working ad perpetuam?>

It reminds me of the coke bottle sending Morse code in the movie "On the Beach"(1959).

Eventually the electric company might turn off the power for the server, unless utility bill payments are also automated.

Sokrates: <devere> That title rang a bell, checked Wikipedia, and then it stroke me that I hadn't seen the movie but read Nevil Shute's novel way back then. 1959, cold war, nuclear threats, those were sinister days of fear. But we have become wiser .... right?

Fortunately, closing CG won't be apocalyptic, but it would somehow be sad if a red button at an electric company should end the viral life of CG.

Aug-10-18  JimNorCal: <devere:> Commonly a hosting company is paid to administer a site. They run the computers and buy the disk drives, etc. The site owner often pays an annual fee, though I am not familiar with large sites such as CG. Perhaps CG pays the hosting company more frequently. Nonetheless, you should not expect that Daniel pays the electric company directly.

OhioChessFan: The Live Games link will turn off each night and turn back on the next morning a couple hours before the scheduled start time of Biel. Until someone shuts it off. I am beginning to think if it makes it through, say, a month, we should leave it up as a sort of monument to Daniel, his version of the perpetual flame.
Aug-10-18  JimNorCal: <ocf>: we should leave (the current Live Game) up as a sort of monument to Daniel

A wonderful sentiment :)
But OMG, a game that is mislabeled in terms of players and ends in a gross blunder? Who would feel worse: NicoG for his blunder to be thus immortalized, or Svidler that his name is incorrectly attached to the loss?

We can come up with a better monument, surely!

Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: I am hoping both GM's would recover from the ignomy, eventually, and be content to remain uber-geniuses.
Aug-12-18  JimNorCal: <Yorkshire Fog>: "I see that the distressing Live Chess link has now gone from the home page."

For me, it is still present on an iPad, but missing from laptop or iPhone display. Interesting how your view changes depending on the device you use.

Sokrates: Very rarely I visit Kibitzer's Cafe, but I did it to search for information about the situation of this CG website. The only information I could find was the following from a certain <Sargon>, who apparently knew Mr Freeman and knows some folks knowing him. It's a rather edgy post, if I may say so, considering we have been kept in the dark with no lifesign from any CG person. But it seems to have been a one-man-army enterprise, indeed, so that is a sort of explanation. - Anyway, here goes, for those who haven't seen it:

<Sargon: This is a duplicate of a post from the player page of Daniel Freeman.

Settle down everyone, especially the <juveniles> and <haters>. Things will be returning to a sense of normalcy very soon, hopefully the bulk of it over this weekend. was <Dan's> baby and his labor of love. Nobody else, including myself, knew 10% of what he knew about the daily operations. Additionally, there are legal, commercial, and familial considerations to be addressed.

I didn't even get access to the backlog of chessgames emails until very recently. Anyone who is impatient should try to control their impulses.

I'm not going to waste <any> time reviewing gratuitous moaning and groaning, but I can safely say that <anyone> who uses this tragic period as an opportunity to abuse their posting privileges is going to get <hammered> sooner or later, in addition to becoming ignominious in this community.

I apologize for any delays in addressing the <plethora of issues> which have arisen and will continue to emerge, but, once again, somebody f-cking <died> who was essentially the sole creator, developer, and administrator of this entire site and community for <15+ years>. Oh, and, believe it or not, there have been more important things I've had to do over the last 10 days.

So <everyone> take a chill pill. And <step off> if you're unwilling to show respect for the dead and display a tad more patience...>

  morfishine: <Sokrates>

At <CG> we have a czar gone

Replaced by someone named <Sargon>

We wanted a host

But gotta nasty post

Looks like <Sargon> is too far gone

Premium Chessgames Member
Sokrates: <morfishine> LOL. Limericks, oh yeah.

The "unwilling to show respect for the dead" is really "too far gone". I haven't read anyone showing disrespect to the late Mr Freeman. It has all been about "What now?" to which question no one has created any answer or even with one single line said, "We can't answer the question now, but we know of the situation and shall return asap".

Bluntly spoken, THAT would show more respect to the late Mr Freeman's life's work than sheer silence.

Premium Chessgames Member
Count Wedgemore: <morfishine>&<sokrates>: I agree with your sentiment.

Daniel Freeman was a very nice and friendly person. When I won the chessbookie game, he sent me such warm and heartfelt congratulations. He seemed like a really cool guy.

sargon sounds more like sauron..

And <morf>'s limerick rocks!

Aug-13-18  JimNorCal: They should have <Sargon> be the brusque tech guy lacking in people skills and a bubbly upbeat person to serve as the voice of CG.

Then, everyone happy! Time will do its healing. Give it some time.

Any evidence of changes? The Live Game was still live last I checked. Perhaps Sargon gave priority to other tasks or was not able to begin repairs.

Premium Chessgames Member
  Sokrates: <Give it some time>

Right, let's do that. I'll take my leave and return, when the elusive <they> regain some kind of control and put the "OPEN"-sign on the entrance door again.

In the meantime, take care, gentlemen!

Premium Chessgames Member
ajile: It would be a real shame if the website shut down. I would really miss all the really incredibly funny and clever comments you people make.

morfishine: <Sokrates> There's nothing really to do except wait. Going forward, I would like to see some sort of <CG> board created with 8-12 members who serve for life basically. When one moves on or passes away, that position is filled. That way, continuity is preserved
