MARCUS KANN
(born 1820, died Feb-03-1886, 65 years old) Austria

[what is this?]

Marcus Kann was a minor Austrian master. He is today remembered as one of the eponyms of the Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6), named for Horatio Caro and Kann. It was essentially unknown when Kann won a striking game with it against the young Jacques Mieses in July 1885, J Mieses vs M Kann, 1885. Kann died just seven months later.

In October 30, 1886, the German magazine Brüderschaft published an article by Caro on the opening, featuring Caro's analysis and games. The article referred to it as "Caro's Eröffnung." Curt von Bardeleben in the July 1890 Deutsche Schachzeitung called the opening "Zur Eröffnung Caro-Kann," and the name stuck. It is today the fourth most common response to 1.e4, after the Sicilian (1...c5), double king-pawn (1...e5), and French Defense (1...e6).

Marcus Kann (1820-1886) from Austria.

FSR: Kann only has two games in the database, and this is his only Caro-Kann. Happily, he won it in style.

FSR: Now the database contains two Caro-Kanns played by Kann. After writing my previous comment I read Edward Winter's article https://www.chesshistory.com/winter... and found another such game, which I got added to the database. Unfortunately, it is a much less memorable game, and he lost it. A Csank vs M Kann, 1884.

fredthebear: Mr. Kann is not in the highfalutin player index despite being more well known than half the inductees.

Victor Kahn is in there but not Marcus Kann.
