May-22-17  Resignation Trap: Sorry to report this, but veteran GM Viktor Kupreichik passed away earlier today at age 68: https://www.svaboda.org/a/28502157....
May-22-17  cunctatorg: Not old enough but on the contrary he died too early; a pity...

However he left an important work...

May-24-17  gars: Sad news. I'd like to know more about him.
May-24-17  Alekhinelives: Cmon 1 year old? Not possible to even learn the movements.
May-24-17  Marmot PFL: That's old for a chess player, as the game causes lots of stress.
May-24-17  Eastfrisian: Yes, again a great loss. R.I.P.
May-24-17  CountryGirl: I am so sad to hear this news. 68 is not very old. Viktor was a fearless attacker, he would take anyone on. RIP.

eternaloptimist: It's sad that GM Kupreichik passed away but he did leave us many brilliant attacking games to remember him by. His beautiful niece, Anastasia Sorokina, is a good chess player & has a great smile as well. She was born in Belarus 🇧🇾 like Viktor but now she lives in Australia 🇦🇺. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana... Anastasia Sorokina <CountryGirl> He was a fearless chess player indeed!

Fusilli: <Marmot PFL: That's old for a chess player, as the game causes lots of stress.>

68 was actually on par with Russian male life expectancy at birth in 2017, and that after rising consistently for a while (it had gone pretty low, and continues to be low for a developed country):

<The latest available data says average life expectancy rose to 72.7 years in 2017, or 67.51 for men and 77.64 for women.> (https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2019...).

Some 10 years ago I gathered data on all grandmasters (live and dead) and calculated GM life expectancy (not the same as life span) at various ages. I remember finding that it was roughly on par with average life expectancy in developed countries, but with considerable uncertainty due to uneven distribution of data over the years--low N for earlier years. I will update the calculation at some point, and maybe try to publish it. But my conclusion at the time was that no, GM life is not harder than average (which was what I expected to find).
