plang: He hadn't played since 2012 - was he ill?
Jan-23-15  Prugno: Amen. There is a very disturbing trend of strong and relatively young Russian GMs fading away and dying prematurely in the last few years.

Vyzhmanavin, S. Kiselev, Chuprov, last year Kharlov, now Lastin... unfortunately I keep feeling that all these departures might be caused not only by natural factors but also by sadder situations such as depression, alcoholism or maybe even suicide.

plang: Unless you know what the cause of death was such speculation seems improper
Jan-23-15  Illogic: <plang> He had played in a rapid event as recently as October, Note the rating changes in <lost in space>'s link

perfidious: It was a surprise to learn of Lastin's passing just now.

In the late 1990s, I recall his frequently finishing high in Russian championships, usually ahead of more widely publicised players, but not getting into the international arena very often.

May-24-15  falso contacto: Rest in peace.
Dec-02-15  zanzibar: An in-depth remembrance of him:

Dec-02-15  zanzibar: This site indicates he died after a long illness:

<В пятницу, 23 января, на 39-м году жизни после тяжёлой продолжительной болезни скончался российский гроссмейстер Александр Ластин , сообщает официальный сайт Российской шахматной федерации (РШФ).>

His rating decline at the end of his life is suggest the same.

Dec-02-15  zanzibar: Here is a 2013(?) interview of him on youtube:

Dec-02-15  zanzibar: For those who want a fun example of his style of play... look at White's move 40 in this game:
