KLAUS V DARGA
(born Feb-24-1934) Germany

[what is this?]
Klaus Viktor Darga was born February 24, 1934 in Pankow. In 1951 he became the German Junior Champion, and two years later he split first place in the World Junior Championship with Oscar Panno. He was West German chess champion in 1955 and 1961. He gained the grandmaster title in 1964, the same year he competed in the Amsterdam Interzonal and won his game against future World Champion Boris Spassky. Then at Winnipeg 1967, he scored what is largely considered his greatest international success, winning the tournament jointly with Bent Larsen, ahead of Spassky, Paul Keres, and other leading players.

Darga represented his country in the Olympiad a total of 10 times, and when the "rest of the world" challenged the Soviet Union to a match in 1970 he was chosen as their second reserve. He remained active in chess in his later years, as a trainer. By profession, he was a computer programmer.

May-13-04   Sacapeach: This guy sure does love do draw people. It looks to me like he plays drawish openings and trades queens off way too early.

vonKrolock: A reader, Ernest Schlich, from the USA, told following in this week's Pandolfini's chesscafe.com page: <"Even grandmasters can make the mistake of resigning too early. In Henry Hunvald’s book Chess Quotations from the Masters there are a couple of good quotes to keep in mind when thinking about resigning. GM Klaus Darga said “My God, I have a winning position” a moment after resigning."> It would be curious to discover to which Game this story is related
