Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Linares (2005)

The 22nd Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares was played 23 February to 10 March, 2005 in Hotel Anibal, Linares, Spain. The participants were Garry Kasparov (Elo ranked #1 in the world), Viswanathan Anand (#2), Veselin Topalov (#3), Peter Leko (#5), Michael Adams (#6), Vallejo Pons (#18), and FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (#24), who had unexpectedly won the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004). The PCA World Champion Vladimir Kramnik (#4) did not take part. The prize money pot was significantly higher than in previous years, with 100,000 euros to the winner and 75,000 to the runner-up. Games started 3:30 pm. Time control: 2 hours 40 moves + 1 hour 20 moves + 30 minutes.

Before the last round, Kasparov was leading by one point, but Topalov won their individual game and leveled the score. They shared the 175,000 euros, but Kasparov was declared the winner based on a new 2nd tie-break criterion: most Black wins (two versus one).

Mar-12-05  bobbyboomer: Great, free Beer!!...Thanks <lostemperor> for doing this prediction contest....lots to keep track of...now, where's that Beer??

lostemperor: <bobbyboomer> it was there on the link I posted. the Beer"pub" here on chessgames.com . That glass of Beer sure looks good, right:)
Mar-12-05  Broon Bottle: kolobok
you are the kng. can yu play chess?
we are lucky to be alive at the same time as Kaspy - and you
Mar-13-05  kolobok: Broon Bottle o come on Broon Bottle i aint king lol just a working guy who has to work to pay bills like most russian i can play a game of chess on about 1900 fide level wanna play? Kasparov greatest ever fisher would not stand against Karpov either fisher knew he had no shot against Anatoly Karpov so he resigned :)
Mar-13-05  Orbitkind: <lostemperor> you've missed me out. Leave the job to cu8fan becasue he can actually do it without making stupid errors.
Mar-13-05  bobbyboomer: I found the Beer!!...it does look good!!
Mar-13-05  Kaspablanca: Do you agree the chauvinism in Torneo de Linares? Despite Vallejo bad performance he likely to be the next year for the only reason he is Spaniard.
Mar-14-05  VishyFan: anybody knows when this Sofia category XXI tournament is scheduled for?

cu8sfan: <VishyFan> All I know is sometime in May.
Mar-14-05  VishyFan: thanks <cu8sfan>, that should set a nice platform for Anand to get past 2800 ELO mark, he'll be 2788 in April list, but is going to lose 3 ELO from Linares, but that's in July list and he's set to gain 8 ELO from Bundesliga so far( and has got 2 more rounds left for OSC Baden Baden) for July's list, so, he has to gain atleast 7 more points to reach that so far elusive 2800 mark.......
Mar-14-05  VishyFan: btw, Svidler has won both his games(rounds 12 and 13) and OSC Baden Baden has shot into lead gaining a 2 point lead over SG Porz with whom one of their last rounds is scheduled, that should be a nice battle...., scheduled for 9/10th of April.....

lostemperor: <Orbitkind> while you are so clever perhaps you can tell me where you posted your predictions and when????

I overlooked the shared place (Kasimdzanov, Vallejo) of TIMER and I had kolobok score corrected myself but forget to put him back in the list (and even cu8sfan can make mistakes).

cu8sfan: <lostemperor> Yes, I make mistakes too and I guess you did a good job, especially considering that you didn't use any software for your calculations.

And while we're talking about making errors: <Orbitkind> It's cu8sfan, not cu8fan. (-; That's also the reason why I didn't even notice this post. Please be kind to those that do us all a favor by making this site better!

tpstar: <cu8sfan> <lostemperor> You both did a great job with your prediction contests for Linares. It's truly a mind-boggling project [even for a chessplayer lol] with so many contestants, but folks really enjoyed trying to guess the results, then watching the games real time. Smiles all around. :>)
Mar-14-05  dankem: <VishyFan>
I think it starts on the 12th of May. Can't tell you how excited I am :) All the big guns coming to my place :)
Mar-14-05  VishyFan: thanks <dankem>

lostemperor: For the record, the extensive search option show no standings prediction of <Orbitkind>. Perhaps it was something he dreamt.

  cu8sfan: Maybe he should leave predicting to others... (-;
Mar-15-05  Chris00nj: <lostemperor: Chris, you are wrong on your Topalov(VT) and Kasimdzanov(RK) - Vallejo(VP) calculation. Topalov finished (shared) first and you put him 4th. That is 3 points difference, so 5-3=2 (like for anybody else who has Topalov 4th place).>

Ah okay. I thought tiebreakers mattered in determining the place. Hence Topalov would have been second and Paco last.

Mar-15-05  TIMER: <lostemperor> Thanks for correcting my score. I look forward to the next supertournament (in May I think), but disappointed Kasparov won't be in them any more.

Mar-15-05  meloncio: <acirce> Dos Hermanas is a city beside Sevilla, my hometown. It's the typical 'dormitory-town', and they always wanted to compete against Linares Tournament, but for some reason they couldn't get it.

BTW, Dos Hermanas = Two Sisters, a peculiar name for a town.

Mar-15-05  acirce: <meloncio> Are you planning to be there and watch? Oh, and I noticed a mistake in my post -- the Leko-Adams rapid match is not until after Sofia.
