NN

[what is this?]

The abbreviation "NN" is used to signify an unknown player, usually an amateur. Although NN is sometimes thought to stand for "no name", that is a misconception: it is actually an abbreviation of the Latin nomen nescio which means 'I do not know the name.'

Chessgames.com uses "NN" to fill in spots in the database where a player's identity is completely unknown, and also for games on internet chess servers, where people often play anonymously.

Some of the first examples of NN's play were published by seminal chess authors such as Gioachino Greco and Pedro Damiano. In these cases, it is unclear if NN represents an actual adversary or if the games were composed for illustrative purposes.

Feb-18-04  Bears092: rawr.

This is why they don't hold many tournament at midnight.

Feb-18-04  WMD: NN stands for Nameless Nobody.
Feb-18-04  Gurch: Odd... he's been competing for over 400 years but he didn't play anything last year. Perhaps his long career is drawing to an end?
Feb-18-04  whatmate: His play is as inconsistent as my own. Capable of beating Philidor, Staunton, Blackburne, Marshall, and Alekhine, yet still losing many of his games in spectacular fashion. What a guy!
Feb-18-04  WMD: Anyone else care to flog this particular dead horse?
Feb-18-04  iron maiden: I don't know about any of you, but if I could just beat Philidor, Staunton, Capablanca, or Alekhine once in a while, I'd be more than willing to lose every other game in six moves.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: Not to speak about endless life... Though it can be tiresome, I guess
Feb-19-04  Bartleby: I've decided That NN is Jack the Ripper. Why, the complete lack of disprovable evidence proves it. Besides, invigorated, he was able to beat the British Blackburne shortly thereafter. Jack the Ripper's fluid MO totally matches NN's equally erratic opening repertoire.

Kasparov didn't participate in Wijk aan Zee because he was entertaining NN in his home. They were playing draughts and NN was writing Kasparov's campaign speeches. This is what *they* don't want you to know.

Feb-19-04  Kenkaku: Actually, NN's one win over Blackburne is disputed (unless there is another one I missed scanning through NN's games. For some reason typing "NN" as a player in the search engine doesn't work correctly for me, so I could be missing one).

chessgames.com: <For some reason typing "NN" as a player in the search engine doesn't work correctly for me> That's why we put him in the pulldown list.
Mar-03-04  Shad0wl0rd16: Is NN a person or does NN just refer to any unknown player?
Mar-03-04  Kenkaku: <chessgames.com> This must have been done fairly recently, I don't remember NN having been on there in the past. Though perhaps I just hadn't looked for him due to this and thus missed that you placed him on the list, whenever you did.
Mar-24-04  ruylopez900: Shadowlord, I think NN is that amateur some experts beat up on in the 1800s (though really, would you mind if Kasparov beat up on you once or twice?). Basically games missing a name get NN to play for them! (chessgames.com correct me if I'm wrong)
Mar-28-04  Vischer: I have a friend whose initials are NN. but NN played in 1590... my friend wasn't alive back then.
Apr-02-04  morphyvsfischer: I finally figured out NN's name... It's Nora Nimzowitsch! Aron's secret wife was a witch by the name of Nora, and loved chess, even though she is terrible at it!
Apr-03-04  Creator of Time: thats it, nn is NONAME,if not, nn is at all time from 1590 till now, IMPOSSIBLE!!! unless he has infinite generation, lol
Apr-04-04  Vischer: NN is an awesome player, beaten alekhine, j h sarratt, g barbero, blackburne, staunton, and philidor. I say we name an opening after him! anyone have any ideas?
Apr-04-04  Vischer: maybe 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.bc4 d5 4.exd5 nf6 5.Qf3? i dunno
Apr-04-04  iron maiden: Vischer, there are already openings named after him; more than after anyone else, in fact. Have you any idea how many openings have No Name?
Apr-05-04  Shakh Matov: man is this NN a loser or what
Apr-05-04  Vischer: <iron maiden> yes there are No Name openings, but no "NN's attack" or "NN's Defence" or "the NN gambit" or "NN system" or something. We should dedicate something to NN who has beaten Alekhine, Sarratt, G Barbero, Blackburne, Staunton, and Philidor! NN IS GREAT! i would be happy losing 91.4% of the time if I could have a win against those players every once in a while.
Apr-05-04  iron maiden: Well then, how about the Scholar's Mate? (1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. Qxf7#.) It suits NN just fine because 99.999% of the time the opponent will see the trap and counter by chasing the Queen around, crushing NN with rapid development. On the other hand, NN might catch Alekhine too drunk or Capablanca too obsessed with his mistress, so that they miss the mate!
Apr-05-04  Vischer: <ironmaiden> on the Gisela Fischdick page you support fisch**** but you don't support NN? NN has beaten great players who i listed twice already! look at my other posts i'm too lazy to list them again.
Apr-05-04  MoonlitKnight: NN has beaten Philidor, von der Lasa, Staunton, Blackburne, Marshall, Alekhine (three times!) and recently Bacrot. Who said he was a patzer?
Apr-05-04  N N: WHO SAID I'M A PATZER?!?!

Oya, and thanks for the support, Vischer. About the opening, maybe something in the king's gambit, which I play a lot. I dunno.
