THE WORLD

[what is this?]
Chess games allowing for consultation are almost as old as chess itself, but only with modern technology can participants from around the globe be unified to make a group-effort of a truly large scale. In 1996, Anatoly Karpov took on the challenge of playing "the World"--i.e., a group of internet participants which included a spectrum of abilities ranging from beginner to grandmaster. Karpov won the game in only 33 moves. "The World" has taken on a number of notable players, and it has always been a good learning exercise for those who choose to participate.

The results for "the World" had been poor until January 11th, 2007, when the internet scored its first major victory: over 2500 members of Chessgames collaborated to defeat correspondence grandmaster Arno Nickel. Then, on July 7th 2007, Yury Shulman resigned his game against the Chessgames members.

On August 11, 2008, after 62 moves and over a year of play, the World (via Chessgames) defeated the 15th world correspondence champion, Gert Jan Timmerman.

An article about the World Team written by User: hms123 in consultation with Team members appeared in the August 2011 issue of <Chess Life> (starting at page 32): http://content.yudu.com/A1t744/Ches...

Nov-24-06  Elixir of Life: <Also a Fisher - The World match would be great. All the Jews would be out trying to win the game.>

I can imagine Gelfand helping The World.

Jan-11-07  ganstaman: The World has won it's first game! The world should celebrate. Imagine cleaning up for that party...

OhioChessFan: Wow, we raised the World's winning percentage 20 points or so.
Jan-12-07  Total Blunder: And now we have at least one notable game!
Jan-12-07  Ultra: Party on World!
Jan-12-07  SouCapi: The world is not the same after 01-11 (One-Eleven): the World has got his first victory over a GM! So we are now +1 -4. We may improve the record by beating Yuri Schulman next and Arno Nickel again on the rematch later this year. Congrats to all!
Jan-29-07  TommyC: www.chessworld.net has been running RoW games for several years against titled players - winning some, losing some, drawing others. They currently are just about holding against Ivar Bern - 17th World Correspondence Chess Champion - for instance.

These games would add a lot of worth to this collection here - many of the more recent games are of a very, very high standard. The webmaster there goes by the name kingscrusher, if anyone wishes to contact him for the PGNs. (They are not easy to locate on the site.)

Jan-29-07  GeauxCool: See profile:

LOL! I should have read the page before posting!

Jan-31-07  Aspirador: Even though this page contains a picture of "The World" there are no pictures of "The World" actually sitting down to play. Can anybody provide pictures from the game "Kasparov vs The World", especially with "The World" pondering...
Apr-03-07  charms: you are right, aspirador,... the bio of the world is also disappointingly brief.
Jun-07-07  Udit Narayan: <The <World <is <not <Enough >>>>>
Jul-03-07  Marmot PFL: <IMDONE4:> So both sides are allowed to use computer analysis in deciding their moves? Obviously there is no way to prevent this, but I wanted to be clear on the policy.
Jul-03-07  Xeeniner: <Marmot PFL> In the Chessgames world/grandmaster matches, both sides can use computer, and i think this is the case in many FIDE correspondence games. In some games, though, like USCF/rated correspondence games, computers are prohibited.
Jul-07-07  Whitehat1963: <The World isn't very good.

(As a chess player of course)

(I know what you were thinking)>

I think Nickel and Shulman might disagree with that! We're on a winning streak. Bring on Kramnik!

WannaBe: Maybe after GM Timmerman, we can get Kasparov? :-)

And avenge for earlier World's losses.

Jul-07-07  Benzol: Don't let Bobby Fischer see the stats at the top of the page, he'll say the up coming game is fixed!

:)

Jul-07-07  Marmot PFL: <Whitehat1963> These wins are not surprising if you have read James Surowiecki's book "The Wisdom of Crowds". Basically its thesis is that under the right circumstances groups are remakably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them. The right circumstances depend mainly on the diversity of the group and the independence of its members from each other.

WannaBe: Don't need no reason to read the book my friends, (boy, that's good grammar, but do buy the book to support the author though...)

By examining the animal kingdom, in the latest issue of National Geographic, where insects were discussed, their action are incredible, and yet, they are (much) 'lesser' on the intelligence tree, or the food tree.

Jul-08-07  rayyan: after GMT, we might play with kramnik, topalov, and anand. maybe kasparov will "revive" from chess and rematch with the world!
