I am Frederick Rhine. The United States Chess Federation awarded me the titles of National Master (at OTB chess) in 1983, and Senior Master of Correspondence Chess in 1997. In February 2024, less than a year after I began playing in the ICCF, it awarded me the title of Correspondence Chess Master. It looks like later this year I will qualify for the title of International Correspondence Chess Master.

As of August 2025, I am the second highest rated USCF correspondence chess player, just three rating points behind Gordon Magat. https://www.uschess.org/assets/top_...

The August 2020 issue of Chess Life magazine had a profile of me (for the text, see Frederick Rhine (my August 1, 2020 comment in the forum)).

I played in the 1997 USCF Absolute Championship (open to the top 13 correspondence players who accept their invitations), scoring 6-6 (+2 =8 -2). The late Alex Dunne wrote in his book on the Absolute Championships, "This was Rhine's only Absolute and he held his own against the best. His two losses were against previous Absolute winners." http://bit.ly/1NB55YP That book contains my games F Rhine vs R Lifson, 1997 and F Rhine vs D Burris, 1997.

But the 1997 event was not my only Absolute. I have also played in the 2023-25 events. In the 2023 edition, I drew all 12 games. That was enough to tie for second! Unlike the 1997 event, this one was under ICCF auspices and allowed the use of engines. There was only one decisive game! https://www.iccf.com/event?id=101114 In the 2024 Absolute, I have ten draws and a win(!), with just one game left, which will very likely end in a draw. https://www.iccf.com/event?id=105325 This time +1 will probably only be enough to tie for fourth. In the 2025 Absolute, I have eleven draws, with just one game left.

I have played first board for the Rogue Squadron in the Chicago Industrial Chess League. I have played online for the Shropshire & Friends team in the 4 Nations Chess League (4NCL), and the Oswestry team in the Shropshire League.

I attended Lane Technical High School in Chicago with the late Chessgames.com co-founder Alberto A Artidiello until he moved out of Chicago. Lane's chess team won the Illinois state championship my junior and senior years, becoming the first school ever to win consecutive championships. Albert also became a master, as did my teammates Kenneth Mohr and Christopher Kus. The late FIDE Masters Albert Charles Chow and Morris Giles were also Laneites.

In July 2013, I played in my second and third regular-rated tournaments of the millennium(!), the Greater Midwest Classic and the Chicago Class (under-2200 section). I tied for second, undefeated, in both, winning $700 and $550, respectively, and brought my rating back over 2200. http://www.uschess.org/assets/msa_j... http://www.uschess.org/assets/msa_j...

I have contributed to hundreds of chess-related articles on Wikipedia under the handle Krakatoa, notably "First-move advantage in chess," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-... "George H. D. Gossip," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George... and "Swindle (chess)," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_..., all of which are almost entirely written by me. The first two of those have been Today's Featured Article, the highest honor a Wikipedia article can receive, one attained by about one out of every 1,400 articles. I have received various Wikipedia awards, including the Imperial Triple Crown Jewels and the Timeless Imperial Triple Crown (which only 12 Wikipedians have received). My user page is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:K.... Al Lawrence in the aforementioned Chess Life article referred to my "erudite chess articles on Wikipedia." Chess historian Edward Winter in his article "Wikipedia and Chess" commended my Wikipedia articles on Gossip and Hugh Edward Myers. (The latter article is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_....) https://www.chesshistory.com/winter...

I am the editor and proofreader of the book "Tournament Battle Plan: Optimize Your Chess Results!" by Daniel Gormally. I was the proofreader of the book "Triple Exclam!!! The Life and Games of Emory Tate, Chess Warrior" by Daaim Shabazz.

I was a contributor to the now-defunct Chicago Chess Blog, http://chicagochess.blogspot.com. I discovered, and documented in my blog post https://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2..., what Taylor Kingston calls "the Mortimer Effect," which has lowered the Morphy Numbers of many modern players (maybe you!). https://chesscafe.com/the-skittles-... I have a Morphy Number of 4 by virtue of L Barden vs F Rhine, 2010 as well as two simul games I lost to Arthur Bisguier when I was in high school.

Six hundred and fifteen of my games are in chessgames.com's database. My favorites are F Rhine vs D Sprenkle, 1981, K Thompson vs F Rhine, 1992, and F Rhine vs A Boerkoel, 1996, each of which has been Game of the Day. Rhine-Sprenkle was published with my annotations in Chess Informant (Volume 32) and cited in the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (Vol. B (2nd ed.) at 183 n.19). In Volume 33 of Chess Informant, my 18th move (18.Nxd6!) in that game was voted the 8th-9th most important theoretical novelty in Volume 32. The game was also cited in MCO-13 and "The Aggressive Nimzowitsch Sicilian 2...Nf6" by Eric Schiller, and occupies an entire chapter in all three editions of "Beating the Sicilian" by John Nunn. It is game 218 in "1000 TN!! The Best Theoretical Novelties" (Chess Informant, 2012). Anish Giri, in his 2023 Chessable course "Lifetime Repertoires: Giri's 1. e4 - Part 3" recommends this line for White. https://www.chessable.com/lifetime-... Following my game against Sprenkle, he writes after 22.Be3, "The computer evaluates this as completely hopeless for Black and it is. Our king is in fact much safer, thanks to our much better pieces." https://www.chessable.com/learn/159... More than 40 years after I played the game, my line still kicks ass!

Thompson-Rhine was published with my annotations in Chess Informant (Volume 57), and cited in the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (Vol. B (3rd ed.) at 172 n.163). Jeremy Silman discusses the game and my analysis of it in his book "Winning with the Sicilian Defence" (2nd ed.).

Joel Johnson in his book "Attacking 101: Volume #005" says of my blitz game F Rhine vs NN, 2019, "White played a flawless Smith-Morra Gambit that IM Marc Esserman would have been proud of." Georges Koltanowski published F Rhine vs A Artidiello, 1974 in his syndicated newspaper column. Richard Palliser discusses the opening of F Rhine vs S Nagle, 1997 in his book "tango!"

I have played some theoretically significant correspondence games in the Damiano Variation of Petroff's Defense (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nxe4!?), demonstrating that Black's third move, commonly regarded as a blunder, is fully playable. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... Nikolaos Ntirlis analyzes two of my games in an article on the variation in Volume 158 of Chess Informant. Cyrus Lakdawala and Carsten Hansen include five of my games in their book on the line, "None Shall Pass: The Unbeatable Damiano Petroff: A tricky and surprisingly solid defense."

Jacob Aagaard analyzes the endings of two of my Internet blitz games in his 896-page tome "A Matter of Endgame Technique" (alas, mine was lacking). Cyrus Lakdawala includes my study-like win in F Rhine vs A Zhao, 2019 in his book "Tactical Training in the Endgame." He also mentions me, albeit not by name, in his book "In the Zone: The Greatest Winning Streaks in Chess History" when he refers to "The Classical Sicilian, which as one of my atheist students told me, is the closest thing he has to a religion." Cyrus analyzes my game against Gadir Guseinov in his book "The Makogonov Variation: A ruthless King's Indian killer."

Commentator Mato Jelic somewhat extravagantly calls my game E Sollano vs F Rhine, 1977 "The Greatest Ever Blitz Game Played in Chicago." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl8... See also Suren's analysis at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWa... My 7...Bxc5!! in that game, played the year before Boris Avrukh was born, is a big improvement on the flaccid 7...Bg6, his recommendation in the book "Beating 1.d4 Sidelines" (2012).

Someone also made a video (moves only) of J Aagaard vs F Rhine, 2021, a 2-1 bullet game where I drew and should've beaten the grandmaster - if only I'd had time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-O... Someone else (or perhaps two different people) did a video (moves only) of Tal vs F Rhine, 1988, my loss to the great Mikhail Tal in a simul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfk... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3o... The latter refers to me as a "great grandmaster!" which isn't quite accurate . . .

User: JimmyVermeer discusses my games NN vs F Rhine, 2021, P Pantelidakis vs F Rhine, 1974, and P Napetschnig vs F Rhine, 1977 in his video "The 109 fastest checkmates in chess history, part 10 of 11." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GT... The sequel "The 109 fastest checkmates in chess history, part 11 of 11," contains a Fool's Mate I played, which I had mentioned in a comment on this site. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0Z... Napetschnig-Rhine is also mentioned in https://www.chess.com/terms/fools-m.... Rick Kennedy discusses my game F Rhine vs NN, 2018 on his Jerome Gambit blog. https://jeromegambit.blogspot.com/2... My game F Rhine vs NN, 2010 is mentioned in the "Checkmate Patterns Course" by Raf Mesotten and John Bartholomew on chessable.com.

I composed this study, which Pal Benko published in "Benko's Bafflers" in Chess Life, May 2006:

White to play and draw

click for larger view

The solution is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stale... It is based on an earlier study of mine, also published in Benko's column. Both compositions also appear in Harold van der Heijden's endgame study database. https://www.chess.com/news/view/76-... The above study is also cited in "The Complete Chess Swindler" by David Smerdon and "Rewire Your Chess Brain: Endgame Studies and Mating Problems to Enhance Your Tactical Ability" by Cyrus Lakdawala.

I was once one of the world's best players at suicide chess (also known as "losing chess"), a chess variant where one wins by giving away all of one's pieces. http://perpetualcheck.com/antichess...

I have successfully submitted 238 puns for Game of the Day. Game Collection: Puns I submitted. User: johnlspouge has remarked, "As far as I can tell, <FSR> is churning out 'actual puns' almost as fast as I can [insert bodily function of choice]." K Tjolsen vs S Marder, 2010. The coveted 2013 Caissar for Best (Worst) Pun went to "Control-Ault-Delete," the pun I submitted for Fischer vs R Ault, 1959, the Game of the Day on December 19, 2012. I won the 2019 Caissar in the same category for my greatest pun ever (and IMO one of the greatest chessgames puns ever) "Late December Back in '63: What a Lady, What a Knight!," N Littlewood vs B Brinck-Claussen, 1963, the Game of the Day on December 30, 2019. Since Caissars are awarded in January, my wins may illustrate recency bias.

Nine of my games have been Game of the Day: NN vs F Rhine, 1977 ("Strangers on a Train"), F Rhine vs F Lasch, 1986 ("Lasch Call"), K Thompson vs F Rhine, 1992 ("Like a Rhinestone Cowboy"), R Delaune vs F Rhine, 1997 ("Red Red Rhine"), F Rhine vs D Burris, 1997 ("Fred Rhine Felled"), F Felecan vs F Rhine, 2019 ("Felecan Brief"), F Rhine vs D Sprenkle, 1981 ("Sparkling Rhine"), F Rhine vs A Boerkoel, 1996 ("Das Rhinegold"), and F Rhine vs NN, 2018 ("'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). Six wins, a draw, and two losses.

I am responsible for World Junior Championship (1957), Vidmar Memorial (1969), Carlsen - Anand World Championship Match (2014), Game Collection: Drawing lines, and 32nd Correspondence World Championship (2020), among others. Legendary chess journalist Leonard Barden recently told me in an email, "I follow your many thoughtful contributions to chessgames.com with interest."

I am a member of the ChessBookie Hall of Fame, having finished fourth in the Summer 2015 Leg, seventh in the Winter 2016 Championship Leg, ninth in the Winter 2017 Championship Leg, ninth in the Spring 2017 Leg, and seventh in the Summer 2017 Leg.

I am very active on Chessable, where my handle is "Krakatoa." https://www.chessable.com/profile/K... I am a "Legend" and have 134 badges, five shy of the world record held by Maestro. https://www.chessable.com/badges/Ma...

FSR: <perfidious> posted a comment on my Wikipedia user page on October 10, so he's evidently still with us. Dunno why he hasn't been here since September 25; maybe he got a life or something?! It occurred to me that maybe A.J. had done in perfidious and was impersonating him. Further reflection makes me certain that that isn't the case. The comment in question was intelligent, not insulting, and had no spelling, punctuation, grammatical or syntactical errors. No way in hell that could be A.J.

"One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

"The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

"This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old chief simply replied,
"The one you feed."

this video has been (wrongly) flagged twice ... and pulled (but only for an hour or two - both times).

They said they will NOT pull it anymore ... however, they are in no position to judge quality (or lack thereof) ... they suggested that I simply tell everyone in the chess community about this video. Ask everyone (and your friends) to watch it, make sure that you voye "LIKE" (Thumbs-Up) if you enjoy my coverage of this great game.

A certain bunch of trolls are misbehaving ... one (in particular) has an axe to grind (a grudge carried over - from another website). This individual has flagged my video's as inappropriate, and told me that he was going to get my stuff removed. He is also creating multiple accounts - to denigrate my video's.

How can you help? Send a quick e-mail to "You-Tube." Tell them about this nonsense. Tell them that there is ntohing wrong with this video, its just chess analysis. (Hit "like.") LifeMasterAJ>

jessicafischerqueen: Hello <FSR>, just dropping in to comment on <JeorgWalter's> repost.

I've had multiple youtube accounts for years, and I've uploaded hundreds of different videos- some I made, some I didn't. I also have many friends who create and upload videos on youtube, some who have had videos pulled and some who have had accounts suspended or deleted.

I know youtube policy backwards and forwards, and two things about all that stuff <AJ> is posting.

1. He's overreacting. The amount of "likes" or "dislikes" on a video means nothing at all. It can't lead to a video being pulled. Also, you can just turn off the function if you want.

Also in that vein, you can control who can comment on a video- set it for "only friends can comment, all others with approval" is popular, or you can just set it for "no comments." You can also delete any or all comments at will.

2. <AJ> is lying as well. Bald, outright lies. His video was never pulled, let alone pulled and put back and pulled again.

A "terms of use flag" from another youtube member doesn't cause a video to be given a "strike" and certainly not to be pulled- not until a youtube employee has looked at it.

Frivolous "terms of use flags" from other users are punished severely, immediate permanent account suspension is the norm on that. That's why it almost never happens.

The only way a video is ever pulled abruptly, without a youtube employee looking at it first, is if the <bona fide copyright holder> on something in the video files a copyright violation claim.

These claims have a form that can't just be faked, it requires real life details like names addresses phone numbers and such.

A "troll" won't be able to make such a claim.

Nobody holds any copyright on anything in <AJ's> video. Therefore, his video was never pulled. That's not what happened. Period.

Also, nobody sends "emails" to youtube. They don't take emails. There's a form you can fill out if you want to contest a violation claim, but it's not an "email." Not to mention, youtube never pulled <AJ's> video in the first place so that lie is academic.

To sum up- <AJ> isn't just "exaggerating for effect."

He is telling bald-faced lies. Lies that cannot be proven by him. Why? Because they never happened.

Just like all the other lies he's told at this website on a daily basis.

Why might <Mark Finan> be harrassing <AJ's> video?

Could it have something to do with the fact that <AJ> accused <Mark> of threatening to kill his daughters, and posted that accusation on the administrator forum?

That lie- disgusting almost beyond comprehension- involving his own daughters in a vile story in order to garner sympathy.

That's a lie because if <Mark> had actually said anything like that, all <AJ> would have had to do is forward the email to a "friend" or <Daniel> or just repost it.

He didn't, although <Mark> repeatedly challenged him to do so.

Ok all that just in case anyone had been tempted to feel an iota of sympathy for the "case of <AJ>'s attacked video."

There are only a handful of "like/dislikes" on his videos to begin with. Nobody at youtube knows, or cares, about <AJ's> video.

Those are the facts of the matter.

Oct-16-11  JoergWalter: <Jessicafischerqueen> & <FSR>

thanks for the explanation. So basically <A.J. Goldsby I> is just sending messages from his parallel nutshell.

jessicafischerqueen: Hello <JeorgWalter> yep it's all a tempest in a teapot.

99.99999999999999999 percent of all functions, including those to do with copyright (the only functions Google cares about, by the say), are automated.

Music and video files have encoded copyright flags. If you try to upload one of these files, your upload will be rejected automatically.

There are ways around the encoding though- if you know how to manipulate a file you can slightly alter it before uploading.

The vast majority of formal copyright violation claims youtube gets are also automated- there are only a handful of big media companies involved, and they are all already on file.

So if WarnerMusicGroup wants to file a violation notice, they don't have to "fax over some documents."

However, a "non big company guy" who holds copyright will indeed have to supply youtube with legal proof of identity, location, and copyright ownership.

Needless to say, not many of these folks file a claim.

Most smaller media companies can't be arsed to file. That's why there is an astonishing amount of indie-label music posted on youtube; those companies don't have any money, or muscle. The entire catalogue of Matador Records, for example, is posted on youtube.

These companies <could>, however, file a successful claim if they wanted to.

But <Mark Finan> couldn't. Third party copyright claims are not allowed. The copyright owner has to be the one sending in the claim. He also couldn't flag a video for being "inappropriate" unless it was actually "inappropriate." Almost nothing is considered inappropriate by youtube. Racism, sexism, threats, bullying, hate speech, snuff videos, explicit combat footage, it's all allowed <defacto>. Youtube is virtually unmonitored, except for big company copyright.

The only way a third party youtube user could get someone else's video flagged and taken down is if the video featured full frontal female nudity. That's NOT ALLOWED for some reason.

And in that case, someone from youtube looks at it first.

Rumor has it that those jobs are highly prized among the male staff.

Oct-16-11
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Oh just to clarify a point- only some files will be automatically blocked on upload.

Most of the big companies have a revenue sharing deal with youtube.

So, for example, in my <Nezhmetidnov> video, there's lots of music and I don't have copyright or permission to use it. But the companies who own that music allow it to be uploaded in return for advertising rights.

That's why an ad will appear on most of my videos. Some companies have deals with most but not all countries.

So for example when I uploaded part three of my documentary, I got a notice saying it was <banned in Germany>.

So I just fooled around with the soundtrack until I found the offending track, then replaced it.

Sorry to go on about this in your forum <FSR>, delete at will obviously- it's just that I do know how youtube operates I want to be as clear as I can that I'm not just talking out my arse- all that stuff <AJ> posted is nonsense.

He batted 1.000 on those posts, he failed to get a single fact correct.

jessicafischerqueen: heh- referring back to our "r" vs "l" controversy-

I tell you it's so difficult here in Korea.

They have these consonants- a sound exactly in-between a hard "g" and a "k", but it's not a hard "g" OR a "k."

Likewise for "l" and "r" and "b" and "p".

Those consonants as pronounced in English don't exist in Korea.

No g,k,p,b,l, or r.

That's why I speak Korean very quickly in a low voice whilst slurring.

Strangely, I have more chance of being understood than if I try to articulate slowly and clearly.

Oct-16-11  JoergWalter: <jessicafischerqueen> You are really lucky.
Well, you know, I'm a problemsolver (although this is not very widely known and appreciated):-)

Problem:
<They have these consonants- a sound exactly in-between a hard "g" and a "k">

Solution:
Why not try <h or j>?

Problem
<Those consonants as pronounced in English don't exist in Korea.

No g,k,p,b,l, or r.>

Solution:
This shortage is unbearable.
Plenty of <g,k,p,b,l, or r> here in germany. If you want you can buy a couple from me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OFo...

Ok now if I'd have tried to upload the whole episode, the upload would have failed because every "The Office" video file has an embedded code in it, and this show is closely guarded.

However, the embedded code is normally in play only for a minute or two from the start.

So you can upload a clip from the middle successfully, as I just did.

Now if anyone who is authorized from the company holding copyright finds my video (they hire people to look), they can flag it (with their company pre-authorization) and it will be immediately, and automatically, deleted.

Then I'll get a message on my channel telling me I have the right to contest the deletion. Which I'd have no grounds to do.

But, and this is my point- if some random youtube member just flags this video for copyright, nothing will happen.

More- if a random youtube member flagged my video for "inappropriate content" then a youtube employee <would> look at it- and not delete it, because it has no full frontal female nudity. The youtube employee would then proceed to permanently delete the youtube account of the person who flagged the video without cause.

The youtube employee in this case would almost certainly recognize it's a clip from "The Office" and in copyright violation, but it wouldn't be his/her job to report that. They'd only be looking for unauthorized bazoombas.

The company, or authorized company employee, has to spot it first. However, in the case of a current hit TV series, the companies really are thorough in looking, so my clip might not stay up long.

Every single word you reposted from <AJ>'s video up there is absolutely untrue.

He's kind of like a perfect "reverse barometer." And a liar.

This one's for you <AJ>:

"No, you're wrong."

jessicafischerqueen: Fabulous- that beer track is fabulous and I believe I'll use that too, thanks.

You love CCR don't you?

Do you know the story of the "Westphalia variation"? You probably do.

I just learned about it recently from researching this project.

Nov-01-11  JoergWalter: <FSR> will repost it here since the expiration date of this message to you will be soon.

< <Nov-01-11 FSR: It looks like CG.com cut out almost two and a half months' worth of comments > Actually, CG cut out only 2 days.

Our Master Annotator posted his notes on Aug 17-11. There were no responses until Oct 29-11 when our master got worried:

(how come the world has missed my notes? I'm a LifeMaster, a LifeMaster, a real original LifeMaster. Only emails from some beggars asking for free lessons and from Viagra sellers when I need my beating.)

<Oct-29-11
LIFE Master AJ: Comments on my notes?>

and he also posted on the Nakamura page:

<Oct-29-11
LIFE Master AJ: Bisguier vs Nakamura, 1998
I put some notes to that game back in August, (when it was "The Game of The Day") ... not many comments/e-mails since then>

Since the comments which followed his request did not put any shine on his laurel crown as the internet's most distinguished chess analyst I guess he did his singing and dancing at the CG stuff to get them deleted.

Lesson learned : it is useless to have any communication with this person who is a complete failure in every respect (be it chess or attitude etc.)>

FSR: <JoergWalter> A.J. had faithfully cut and pasted Fritz's assessments, and was understandably chastened when commenters didn't fall all over themselves praising his genius in doing so. It's bizarre how the admins feel obligated to jump to do his bidding every time he whimpers that someone has said something mean to him.
