ALEXANDER MOTYLEV
(born Jun-17-1979, 46 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Romania)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Born in Yekaterinburg (his father is Anatoly Motyliov), Motylev learned to play chess when he was 4 and became a Candidate Master by the time he was 11. He became a GM in 2000.

Championships

<Youth> He has won the Russian under 16 and under 18 championships.

<National> Motylev won the 2001 Russian Championship. Placed 3rd in the Russian Championship Higher League (2013), thereby qualifying for the Russian Championship Superfinal (2013). He was second on tiebreak behind Vladislav Artemiev at the Russian Higher League Championship 2015, this placement earning him qualification to the Russian Superfinal to be held in August 2015.

<Continental and World Cup> He scored 7.5/11 at the European Championship (2011), placing 26th on tiebreak and qualifying for the World Cup (2011), where he unexpectedly lost in the first round to Ukrainian GM Yuri Drozdovskij, succumbing to the Armageddon blitz tiebreaker after drawing the classical games and the rapid and blitz game tiebreakers. Motylev won the European Championship (2014), a full point ahead of his rivals with 9/11 (+7 -0 =4), thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2015) where he defeated Boris Grachev in the first round only to fall to Anish Giri in the second, thereby bowing out of the Cup tournament.

At the European Rapid Championship (2021) he finished in a three way tie for first with Paulius Pultinevicius and Alexander Motylev.

Standard Tournaments

He was =1st (5th on tiebreak) at the 3rd Dubai Open in 2001 and won the Corsican Open at Bastia in 2003. In 2005, he was equal first with Emil Sutovsky (who won on countback) at the Aeroflot Open (2005), second at the 2nd Sanjin Hotel Cup (behind Pentala Harikrishna). In 2006, he and Magnus Carlsen jointly won the Corus Group B (2006). He placed outright 2nd at the category 18 Karpov Poikovsky (2013). Motylev participated in the Gashimov Memorial (Group B) (2014), the 2nd tier of a tournament inaugurated to commemorate the late Azeri grandmaster. He came outright second with 5.5/9 behind Pavel Eljanov in the category XVII 10-player round robin event.

Team Events

In October he was first reserve for his team Malachite in the European Club Cup (2013), scoring 4/5 and helping his team to win silver.

Jun-17-09  wordfunph: Happy birthday, Alexander!
Jun-17-09  swordfish: Yes, what a happy 30th this must be for Motylev, coming off his win at the Karpov tournament. I wonder why he's not player of the day.
Jun-17-09  Raisin Death Ray: Congrats for winning the Karpov tournament!

BTW, who are you? :)

Jun-29-09  frogbert: and now i can congratule motylev with <officially breaking 2700> in the july list, as poikovsky has been included and rated just before the release of the new list.

congratulations! :o)

Sep-06-09  percyblakeney: Motylev isn't doing well in the Russian Championship. He is 2710 but has a minus score after five rounds (two losses with white), in spite of only playing opponents rated in the 2500s.

Congratz. :)

Jun-30-12  Jason Frost: <Shams> Mot-i-liov, with middle i a bit harder/throatier than regular i.

By the way, anyone know why he's playing Chinese league over Russian higher league?

Mar-18-14  Conrad93: 9/11 at the Euro-Ch.

He gained 28.8 points according to ChessBase and ChessVibes, which puts him at 2684. Making him number 61 in the world. He is currently number 99.

Apr-11-14  Conrad93: Hoping to seem enter the top 50, even if he is a bit old.

Also, there's an interesting line in the Sozin-Scheveningen which brought me here:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bc4 e6 7.Bb3 Nbd7 8. f4 Nc5 9.Qf3 Be7 10.O-O O-O 11.Be3 Qc7 12.g4 b5 13.g5 Nfxe4 14.Nxe4 Bb7 15.Nxe6

And now if 15...fxe6 (vs. 15...Nxe6) White can play the interesting 16.Nxc5 instead of 16.Bxc5 and put his queen on the block as Motylev did in the following game:

As far as I know this is the first game with this dynamic play. My version comes from <MillBase>, I don't think <CG> has it.

The first game I could find with the earlier setup move of 15...Nxe6 being played I found on chess-db:

<
Erik Sobjerg vs. Axel Stephan

(Denmark, 2265) 0 - 1 (Germany, 2228)

Event: Chiasso op2, 1991, Lipnitzky Variation, Sicilian (B90) >

http://chess-db.com/public/game.jsp...

In this game White played 16.Bxc5, which makes a good game, but not quite as dynamic as the line where White exchanges the queen for minor pieces. Golubev should be mentioned as a player who has used the line several times.

May-01-21  joddon: He should be Ian Nepopatchichi s second for Carslen tournament...he would perfect to train the senses that become dull under pressure from Carslen inauthentic uninventive incentive attacks while playing....losing time he won't have enough time on his clock to counter bad maneuvering of pieces.....thats why Motylev is perfect trainer...he has strange ideas which help Ian.

Yeah, Carlsen is the most boring player ever.

Have you taken up the cudgels and joined <messiah> in the vaudeville act <dumbass and dumbasser>?

Dec-16-21  Albertan: Motylev is the top-ranked player in the European Rapid Championship which takes place between December 17th-19th in Poland. For more information about this event go to:

The European blitz chess tournament will be held at the same time as the Rapid tournament. GM Jan Krzysztof Duda is the top-rated player in the World European Blitz Chess Championship.

Congratulations!

Jul-01-23  Caissanist: One of the higher-profile GM opponents to Russia's war, Motylev and his family moved to Serbia last summer and he has now changed his federation to Romania: https://www.chess.com/news/view/ale... .
Jul-31-23  Olavi: It is not really important... but in light of his switching federations and signing the open letter condemning the war - how is his relationship with his long time ward, Sergei Karjakin?
