Jan-04-05   mack: Cherniaev's a character isn't he? He played in the 2004 Bury St Edmunds congress and after every move more or less he'd get up and snear at somebody else's game before walking back again.

notyetagm: I am looking for the PGN of the game <Williams-Cherniaev Hastings 1999 1-0>, which ends with the knight fork 1 Rf1-f7! Qe7xf7 2 Ne4xd6+ and 3 Nd6xf7. Thanks to anyone who posts it.
Dec-26-05   aw1988: <mack> LOL. Where'd you get that information?

notyetagm: Thanks, <tpstar>. Do you mind if I ask where you got it from? I tried all of the online databases and had no luck.

tpstar: <notyetagm> I spent $250 on ChessBase 8.0 because I use it to annotate games for our state magazine. They include a "Big Database" with over a million games, which has proven very useful for move discrepancies against the more selective cg.com database.

notyetagm: Thanks again, <tpstar>! I swear I looked for this game on cg.com two months ago and they didn't have it.

notyetagm: Now I see the problem, <tpstar>. The problem book in which I saw this game had Larsen as Black and all my searches for year=1989 and Black=Larsen with White=Hernandez came up empty. Plus it's strange to see "Mr. Knight" Bent Larsen forked so easily. Just goes to show you how truly nasty knight forks can be.

Oct-07-06   mack: <<mack> LOL. Where'd you get that information?>

A bit late, but I was there! He's also playing in the 2006 Met Congresss at Liverpool St, and is doing the same thing. I find it quite endearing - he was none too impressed with IM Basman's Grob on the board next to him either. By the way, I'd just like to correct my two year old spelling gaffe: that's 'sneer', thank you very much.

Oct-07-06   mack: I didn't mean to give the impression that he's unpleasant in any way, though - he's a top bloke, and from what I've read of it, his new book on Pilsbury looks excellent.
Jan-07-08   pawnofdoom: chessbase.com just had an article that described this guy as being unable to "play through an entire weekend tournament, without once complaining about the pairings". Anyone know something about this peculiar habit of his?
Jan-07-08   Jim Bartle: A more complete quote, from an article on a tournament where he wasn't even playing:

"By the same token, it is also possible that Amy Winehouse will be elected Chair of the Temperance Society, Britney Spears will win a Good Parenting Award, and the ever-charming Alexander Chernaiev will play through an entire weekend tournament, without once complaining about the pairings. But don't hold your breath."

Mar-27-08   ChesterTheJester: he seems a good guy, and much more gracious in defeat than many other foreign GMs/IMs. Although Steve Giddens comment (above) about the pairings is pretty accurate.
