Mar-30-06  percyblakeney: Gaprindashvili is advancing on the April list, she now has 2375 which is her highest rating in five years.
Jun-14-07  Petrosianic: Nona actually got the GM title in 1978, not 1980. It's commonly believed that she was awarded the title merely for having been Women's World Champion, and that Susan Polgar is the first woman to have earned the title through the Norm system, but this is not the case. Nona *did* earn the title through the norm system, but some discretionary judgment was used.

The whole story can be read in Pal Benko's column in the January 1979 issue of Chess Life & Review. Nona had the norms, but was a game or two short of the 24 game requirement. (And the 2500 Elo requirement didn't exist in the pre-inflation days of 1978).

Some may remember how Frank Anderson missed the GM title in 1958 when he was prevented by illness from showing up for a game that would have given him the GM title even had he lost it. He had the norms, but was a game short of the overall requirement, and never got the title. 20 years later, things had loosened up enough that a little discretionary judgment could be used in borderline cases. I've heard (but am not completely certain) that Edmar Mednis got his title the same way.

No discretion was used in Polgar's case, she had all the requirements, pure and simple. But Nona was the first female GM, and certainly earned it.

keypusher: In the early 1960s she seems to have been as far ahead of other women as Judit Polgar is now. Not only did she beat Bykova +7-0=4, she also won the preceding Candidates' tournament undefeated (+10-0=6).

Technically Tal, Evans, and Bisguier had not earned the GM title when they received it. Discretionary judgement was used in awarding them the titles as well.

Tal was not even an International Master, nor had he even made a norm in an International tournament, however he was the champion of the Soviet Union. At the 1957 FIDE congress he was granted the GM title, as were Evans and Bisguier (who had missed the final norm he would have needed by a half point) in a "truly Solomon-like decision" (Tal).
