SERAFINO DUBOIS
(born Oct-10-1817, died Jan-15-1899, 81 years old) Italy

[what is this?]

Serafino Dubois was Italy's leading player in the mid 19th century. He beat Marmaduke Wyvill in 1846 (55-26 on equal terms and 30-39 when Wyvill received odds of pawn and move) and Jules Arnous de Riviere (+22, =3, -8) in 1855. In 1862 he was 5th at the London tournament and also lost a match to Wilhelm Steinitz (+3, =1, -5). Specializing in Opening Theory he wrote a three volume work from 1868 to 1873 entitled 'Le principali apertura del gioco degli scacchi secondo i due diversi sistemi, italiano e francese'. In 1847, he edited the first chess column in Italy in the Italian magazine L’Album.

Dec-08-03  Alchemist: How is it exactly that this man's play spans 133 years?

I think that the games from 1973+ may not be genuine.

Dec-08-03  Sarimanok: Maybe he is an Immortal from the Highlander series.
Feb-12-04  Taidanii: I'd like to know more about this player. To beat Steinitz and draw Blackburn is an accomplishment.

Honza Cervenka: Serafino Dubois (1817-1899) was the leading Italian player of the 19th century. Recently there was published a book about him. See http://www.messaggerie.it/catalogo/...
May-01-06  vonKrolock: Excellent article on-line "Romantic Italian Chess
and the first Russian Masters", by Dr. Isaac M. Linder <"Serafino Dubois (1817-90) became a true representative of the Italian school in the 19th century. He succeeded in substantiating the combination principles not only in theoretical monographs but by testing them himself in the games he played against the leading players of the day, including Anderssen, Paulsen and Steinitz. The role of S. Dubois in the chess history of Italy can be compared with that of M. Chigorin in Russia."> more at http://freeweb.supereva.com/carmelo...

Oct-10-08  brankat: One of he pioneers of the theory of Chess Openings.

As a player, well, to win against W.Steinitz 3 games in a set match is no small feat.

Oct-10-09  eightsquare: Happy Birthday to Serafino Dubois!!
Oct-10-09  WhiteRook48: beating Steinitz in 3 games was nearly impossible
Apr-22-10  Gilmoy: Away with this pretense!
Apr-22-10  abstraction: Apparently Dubois didn't want realism, he wanted magic ... < Gilmoy: Away with this pretense!> You "poor fool" :)
Apr-22-10  rapidcitychess: I'm not sure that this guy exists...;)

May-11-15  TheFocus: <This is the most monotonous and annoying play you can imagine - it rarely gives rise to combinations of some interest> - Serafino Dubois.
Jan-16-16  zanzibar: <Focus> what's the context for that quote??

New item about match between M. de Riviere and Dubois played in Rome ~early summer 1862:

http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...

<The result was: Signor D., 0; drawn, 1; M. de R. all the rest> !

No mention of how many games constitute "all the rest".

Any of these games in the record?

Jan-16-16  TheFocus: <zanzibar> <Focus>< what's the context for that quote??>

I don't know. I got it from a chess quotes site.

Jan-16-16  zanzibar: I was afraid of that. The quote would be much more interesting knowing what he's talking about...

... or maybe not.

Jan-16-16  zanzibar: Quite possibly he was talking about the <French Defense>...

Has any attempt been made to verify these records?

Dec-06-21  ndg2: Never heard of him until now, but this guy played crazy chess on a crazy strong level. A true embodiment of the romantic era of wild attacks!
