Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
USSR Championship 1964/65

The 32nd USSR Championship was held in Kiev from December 25, 1964 through January 27, 1965, with a field of twenty players:

Yuri Averbakh ; Nikolay Bakulin ; Anatolij Bannik ; Georgy Borisenko ; David Bronstein ; Boris Goldenov ; Ratmir Kholmov ; Viktor Korchnoi ; Nikolai Krogius ; Anatoly Lein ; Vladimir Liavdansky ; Anatoly Lutikov ; Viacheslav Osnos ; Andrejs Petersons ; Yuri Sakharov ; Leonid Shamkovich ; Leonid Stein ; Alexey Suetin ; Mikhail Tal ; Evgeni Vasiukov .

It saw an interruption in the dominance of Leonid Stein, as Korchnoi came both hungry and in good form. By round 7 he had 6 1/2 points and was already 1 1/2 ahead points of the field. By round 11, he had stretched these totals to 10 points and a 2 1/2 point lead. After that, everybody kept a safe distance away and Korchnoi eased up a bit, still clinching first place with two rounds to go.

perfidious: <Kikoman> In two of his other three wins in the Soviet final (the exception being 1960), Korchnoi won with ease.

For those who might object that Korchnoi won by only a half-point in 1962, that is true, but he had 12/14 and the runners-up only got within shouting distance after Korchnoi's loss to Mikenas in round 16. Even then, Korchnoi maintained a lead of a full point entering the last round.

Aug-26-13  Everett: One of Bronstein's last excellent tournament results at the highest level.
Apr-08-15  Howard: It was also one of Shamkovich's best performances in a Soviet championship.
Apr-08-15  bobthebob: I think Korchnoi will win this.
How does it affect his live rating?
Apr-08-15  Jim Bartle: Nice.

Jun-22-15  Howard: This was probably Shamkovich's best performance in a Soviet championship.
Mar-23-17  Marmot PFL: The absence of strong players such as Spassky, Petrosian, Geller, Keres and Taimanov helped Korchnoi win more games than usual but still a great result.
Jul-19-18  ewan14: Korchnoi beat world champion Petrosian twice in 1965 and the others were not a threat at this time
Jul-19-18  ewan14: Apologies , Keres and Taimanov at the USSR championship 1965
