MIKHAIL TAL
(born Nov-09-1936, died Jun-28-1992, 55 years old) Latvia
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Mikhail Nekhemievich Tal was born in Riga, Latvia (annexed by the USSR in 1940). At six, he learned chess from his father, a medical doctor (source: Tal interview in <Chess Life>, May 1967). Tal won his first Latvian Championship in 1953, and earned the title of Soviet Master the following year. In 1957, aged twenty, he became the youngest-ever Soviet Champion. In 1960, following a string of victories in strong tournaments (including a second consecutive Soviet Championship, the Portorož Interzonal and the Candidates in Yugoslavia), Tal became the youngest World Chess Champion with a match victory over Mikhail Botvinnik. This record was broken by Garry Kasparov in 1985. Suffering from poor health, Tal lost the rematch with Botvinnik in 1961. He never qualified for a title match again.

Tal continued to struggle with health problems for the rest of his career, which was often marked by inconsistent results. On a number of occasions, however, he was still able to achieve world-class successes. Tal added four more Soviet Championship victories to his resume (in 1967, 1972, 1974, and 1978), equalling Botvinnik's all-time record of six. In 1979, he won joint first place at Montreal with Anatoly Karpov, briefly climbing back to second place in the world rankings and becoming only the third player after Fischer and Karpov to reach a rating of 2700.* In 1988, Tal won the World Blitz Championship. He died of renal failure in 1992 at age 55.

Paul Keres was a font of inspiration for him and Tal won three Keres Memorials: 1977, 1981, and 1983. Renowned for his aggressive, sacrificial playing style, Tal was also a noted chess journalist and author. In his autobiography, The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal, he annotates 100 of his greatest games.

Jun-01-11  kia0708: Tal: "Fischer is the greatest genius to descend from the chess heavens."

Interesting I think.

Jun-06-11  bronkenstein: BTW jessicafischerqueen´s vid with sunglasses is about this game Tal vs Benko, 1959 , keygame that allowed Tal to challenge Botvinnik for the WC title , and eventually become the champion .

You have full story part by part in kibitzing on that game´s page.

Jun-13-11  micartouse: A funny story from Tal's wife:

<Very young chess players would often visit him, and he consulted them. Well-known grandmasters would also come to us. I remember Mark Taimanov's visit during his preparations for the match against Fischer. Misha asked, "Mark, how should I play you - with my full strength, or experiment a bit?" Taimanov answered, "Of course, as strongly as you can." My husband won all five games.>

Jun-13-11  talisman: and "they" took away his GM title and i'm not sure if he ever got it back.(talking bout taimonov of course).
Jun-14-11  newzild: Odd that the Magician from Riga had such a low peak rating - 2645. Sure his best years were in the late 50s and 60s, before Elo ratings came along, but he was second in the world (to Karpov) in 1979.

perfidious: <newzild> Seems to me that on the official list after his crushing win in the Riga Interzonal, he topped out at ~2705.
Jun-15-11  newzild: <talisman: and "they" took away his GM title and i'm not sure if he ever got it back.(talking bout taimonov of course).>

No "they" didn't. The GM title was bestowed on Taimanov by FIDE, and Russian chess officials had no power to "take it away".

However, it is true that Taimanov suffered. He lost his Government salary for a while, and his overseas travel was restricted.

Jun-17-11  talisman: <newzild> what "they" bestowed (back then) to GM's was taken away from Taimonov, although later ( i beleive) was restored.
Jun-24-11  MMan: Interesting reference to Tal in V. M. Zubok's "Zhivago's Children", a book about the intelligentsia in the post-Stalin USSR:

"The avant-garde wave even reached the game of chess. During the Stalinist era it was the second most popular game after soccer, and it was propogandized by the regime as the manifestation of Soviet superiority. Everyone was shocked when the twenty-four-year-old Mikhail Tal defeated Mikhail Botvinnik, a living symbol of Stalin-era Soviet predominance in chess. Botvinnik's calculating style led Western analysts to compare Stalinist foreign policy moves the chess gambits and endgames. Tal, by contrast, dazzled the chess world and millions of Soviet chess fans with his unpredictability. He was a genius of improvisation who viewed chess as a art form. Every game for him was as inimitable and invaluable as a poem."

The above contains the following footnote:

"Mikhail Tal, born in Riga, Latvia, moved to Moscow, where he led a furiously active social life and frequented many Moscow kompany (informal intellectual gatherings), theaters, and poetic readings. He was a darling of the 'new' journalists and published many reflections on chess, life, and art."

Sneaky: I shared this anecdote at the Kibitzer's Cafe but they were too embroiled in their discussion about god-knows-what to notice, so I'll repeat it here. The source was some random Russian site that I was translating to English, but even if apocryphal it makes for a great story:

♖ ♖ ♖

Tal was being transferred to a hospital, and an intern was asking him a bunch of routine questions. The intern eventually asked,

<Are you addicted to morphine?>

To which Tal replied,

<NO!!! Tchigorin!!!>

kingfu: I prefer the picture of Tal sucking a cigarette. It is a more accurate portrait.

Thank you Chessgames for trying to mitigate the real Tal. Cigarettes and Vodka take a toll on ALL of us.

TNX, Sneaky

We need more, more, more. The Kibitizers tend to be Chess Light. I guess Tal could have said, "No Gruenfeld."

HeMateMe: I don't like the photo. It looks like he is running for Congress with John Edwards. I'd prefer to see Mr. T at the board, perhaps exchanging stares with young Fischer.

However, it is refreshing to see photos refreshed now and then.

  kingfu: HMM,

Have you seen the new Fischer photo? He is doing THE STARE on a pinball machine in Coney Island!

Great stuff, Chessgames.

Check out game 459. Fischer versus Tal. Tal plays The French!

I have been trying to educate folks on the value of NOT castling into the attack from the black side. That usually means black does 0-0, which is short for uh-oh.

In game 459 Tal does 0-0-0. Even though he lost the exchange, Tal still got a draw.

HeMateMe: He's probably silenting accusing the machine of swindling him out of points..."Hey! I was supposed to get DOUBLE BONUS when I hit the 3 cushion! I want my money back! Its a conspiracy to take our money! MY MONEY!"

LOL.

Did The Pinball Machine offer a DRAW??

Jul-09-11  teddysalad: Finally a new and improved picture of Tal. We know he drank and smoked a lot, we didn't need to be constantly reminded of it.
Jul-09-11  bronkenstein: Too fancy for my taste , the previous one was much more bohemian (though he did look like Mussolini there =).
Jul-10-11  TiburcioTinio: hello din po kay mikail tal favorite ko kahit patay na
