RICHARD TEICHMANN
(born Dec-23-1868, died Jun-15-1925, 56 years old) Germany

[what is this?]

Richard Teichmann was born in Lehnitzsch Sachsen-Altenburg, Germany. In 1890 he was a student of modern languages (becoming fluent in several of them) and studied in Berlin where he also improved his chess. He moved to England in 1892 as a language teacher and resided there for a number of years.

His chess career began with a third place at Leipzig 1894, but at London 1899 he had to withdraw after four rounds because of eye trouble. He lost the use of his right eye and thereafter wore an eye patch. He returned to tournament play in 1902, winning so many fifth prizes up to 1910 that he earned the nickname "Richard the Fifth".

He placed first at London (1900), and at Karlsbad (1911) he had his finest result, finishing first in a strong 26-player field (+13, =10, -2).

In match play he won against Jacques Mieses, Rudolf Spielmann and Curt von Bardeleben and in 1921 drew (+2, =2, -2) with Alexander Alekhine. He understood positional play very well and was a good analyst and brilliant problemist.

A chronic kidney and heart complaint overcame him in the Virchow Hospital in Berlin in 1925, where he passed away.

Dec-23-12  vinidivici: There are some mistakes in the chessgames.com site. Especially in the player's explanation.

How can Teichmann years covered listed 1890-1960 while he died in 1925.

And this rating informations also a mistake in the Khoudgarian page.

Phony Benoni: <vinidivici> The Teichmann situation is not unusual. The game from 1960 may involve a different Richard Teichmann, or was simply linked to this page by mistake. Unfortunately, this other person appears to have no other games in the database, so it's difficult to decide what exactly is going on or how to correct it.

If somebody knows, there is always the correction slip process to notify the administrators.

Dec-23-12  waustad: <vindivici>They admit that there are errors, often caused by duplicate names or some such. They rely on us to help clean up these issues. If you find a serious one, post a correstion using Error Correction Form
Dec-23-12  waustad: <phony>We must have been typing at the same time.
Dec-23-12  Karpova: This time, the mistake could easily be resolved and I submitted a correction slip. The player in this particular game (against Heinz de Carbonnel) was Cenek Teichmann, not Richard.

There is software that looks for similar names to avoid creating several pages for one player. But it's not error prone, so since no Cenek Teichmann exists, the software turned him into Richard instead - btw. Cenek's FIDE page http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?... - I had a similar problem once with a Simul game from Akiva against V. Teichmann played in the 1930ies, where the same problem occurred.

Dec-23-12  Kikoman: Rest In Peace Richard Teichmann.
Dec-23-12  vinidivici: <waustead>
<If somebody knows, there is always the correction slip process to notify the administrators.>

Maybe later until i find another mistake again.
Fortunately the mistakes not in the popular players so surely it just a handful of users would notify the mistakes.

Dec-24-12  brankat: Happy Birthday Mr.Teichmann.
Dec-24-12  TheFocus: Happy Birthday, Richard the Fifth! You and Emanuel Lasker share the same birth date.

offramp: <He won so many fifth prizes up to 1910 that he earned the nickname "Richard the Fifth".>

This nickname would make more sense if there was a <famous> Richard V - but there isn't one.

I would call him <The General Chang of the Twentieth Century>.

Nov-27-13  Karpova: When was he called <Richard V.> for the first time? I found such a remark by Krejcik on pp. 307-308 of the September-October 1911 'Wiener Schachzeitung': <Teichmann will nicht mehr Richard V. bleiben, er nennt sich nun Richard I. (Löwenherz).> (Teichmann doesn't want to remain Richard V., he calls himself Richard I. (Lionheart) now) - This is after Carlsbad 1911.
Dec-24-13  brankat: R.I.P. Richard the 4th! (or is it the 6th? :-))
Feb-15-14  Karpova: Earlier mention of his nickname <Richard V.>: Page 85 of the March 1909 'Wiener Schachzeitung'
Apr-10-14  Karpova: In the Cafe Bauer in Berlin (Unter den Linden) the match between Richard Teichmann and Jacques Mieses took place in 1910. The owners of the Cafe Bauer donated 1,000 <Mark>. Teichmann won with +5 -0 =2.

Apr-18-14  Karpova: Dr. Emanuel Lasker:

(Teichmann has his own style. He overlays his play with invective, in case of a loss, in the opposite case he pleases the opponent by denigrating the mistakes the opponent made. This way, displeasure over a lack of success never lasts long, and you enjoy yourself among yourselves excellently.)

Source: 'Pester Lloyd', 1909.02.27, p. 8 (Dr. Emanuel Lasker's report on St. Petersburg of February 22nd)

Aug-11-14  Marcelo Bruno: <myschkin> You are right that is a bad PGN code. It's incridible that softwares like Chessmaster contain this error. I checked the ChessBase software and I got there the correct information: 1924. Another strange information that the Chessmaster provides: Lasker's Memorial Tournament (Lasker was alive in this time and living in Berlin).
Aug-11-14  Marcelo Bruno: <dehanne> Yo-ho-ho!
Apr-07-15  Conrad93: He looks like a James Bond villain.
Apr-10-15  N0B0DY: SPOILER ALERT: <Conrat93> is really Darth Vader's bastard love child.
Apr-11-15  Conrad93: <is really Darth Vader's bastard love child.>

How would Darth Vader have children? Pretty sure his junk was burned off when he dropped in that lake of lava.

May-16-15  TheFocus: <Chess is 99% tactics> - Richard Teichmann.
Dec-24-16  Paarhufer: The new (and possibly last) article in Michael Negele's biographical series deals with Richard Teichmann: http://www.schachbund.de/news/genug...

As a byproduct Negele establishes the correct date of birth as 23 December 1868, and also explains the wrong date. But it is the whole article, which is great.
