Will you be including the Albena Masters?
Just wondering. |

 | | chessgames.com: We intended to but couldn't find the PGN so we put it on delay. Are there PGNs now? |

 | | chessgames.com: What we actually said was <The idea of people voting on posts to be "thumbs up" / "thumbs down" in the style of Youtube or Reddit is not offensive to us, as long as it's not used as a kind of censorship tool.> That is to say, the "up/down" buttons *are* offensive to us under many circumstances, including the way they are used on some other very large sites. I'm sure you've all seen sites where if something unpopular should be posted, it quickly gets "downvoted to oblivion" as they say, until people can no longer see it. The things that get upvoted are things that people want to hear. So in the end, the crowd ends up being mollified by being told exactly what it wants to hear--and nothing else is tolerated. That's lynch-mob censorship, and it has no place at Chessgames. On the other hand: if there was a way to nominate a post as "post of the week", and the mechanism was unobtrusive, and nobody was obligated to participate if they didn't want to, what would be the harm? |

 | | Annie K.: <On the other hand: if there was a way to nominate a post as "post of the week", and the mechanism was unobtrusive, and nobody was obligated to participate if they didn't want to, what would be the harm?> <cg> we are usually on the same page WRT these things. :) There is an indirect "harm" involved here, though. Thing is, many of us adult regulars - most of us, I'd say - simply do not come to this site with any intentions of spending our time on going around clicking "Like" buttons". So this feature's statistics will always be skewed by the <minority> demographic that <do> spend their time at cg with such frivolous activities. Can you see where that will lead? Silly popularity contests will push posts, or whatever else may be "Liked" to the top regularly, and actual valuable contributors will eventually start feeling unappreciated. Not a good idea. |
|
| Jun-06-12 | | Blunderdome: The harm would be that there are enough popularity contests on this site already. |
|
| Jun-06-12 | | Blunderdome: <popularity contests> Annie K. posted faster than me, but I hadn't seen her post when I selected the identical phrase. |
|
| Jun-06-12 | | Blunderdome: And unless you restrict voting to premium members, you're just asking for a sockpuppet arms race. |
|
| Jun-06-12 | | hms123: <cg> I "like" <Annie's> post a lot. It expresses my feelings as well. I suspect that the <law of unintended consequences> will come into play with a vengeance. Let's leave well enough alone. |

| Jun-06-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: <<On the other hand: if there was a way to nominate a post as "post of the week", and the mechanism was unobtrusive, and nobody was obligated to participate if they didn't want to, what would be the harm?>> I have to agree - that (to a certain extent) - the idea of voting something "thumbs-down" (or up) worries me somewhat ... Having said that, a forum dedicated to really outstanding posts would be a great idea. Every day I see posts - by many different users - that deserve a better fate than being considgned to oblivion, in some cases they are outstanding examples of wrinting or analysis ... maybe something never observed/noted previously. So ... I guess there are "pro's and con's" both ways on this one ... |

| Jun-07-12 | | ughaibu: Thanks. There doesn't immediately appear to be one devoted to maths, but by an interesting coincidence, your name is suggestive. I was wondering if the strong Goldberg conjecture implies the Riemann hypothesis. |

| Jun-07-12 | | dakgootje: Not sure if any one of us is really that terrific at maths. Though I haven't ever spoken to LoveThatJoker so for all I know he might be the worlds biggest maths-genius. Anyway, hms is a wizard with statistics - but I'm not sure how at home he is with number theory et cetera. Dom knows way too much about way too much - so who knows.. I think your surest bet might be User: MrMelad - I'm have absolutely no clue what he is doing with maths, so that should be a good sign. |

 | | chessgames.com: Also don't forget M61MG Wrestler chessforum. It was founded by a chessgames fan, but the account is now given lifetime membership status. User: MrMelad is indeed the resident mathematician. Maybe enough talk about the Goldbach conjecture can lure him from out of hiding. |

 | | Annie K.: User: Catfriend has number theory for breakfast AND snacks - but no forum, and he can't use the Kibitzing Search, not being a premium member these days - so you'll just have to catch him some time and place he's hanging around. :) |
