Feb-03-12 | | s4life: <frogbert:
hm... what about when the difference in performance 91 points instead of only 41 points then? i guess s4life must have considered it <very> unfair that naka got the 1st prize back in 2008.>I don't remember the tiebreaks with Ponomariov but I remember the one Bu Xiang Zhi lost .. I thought it was a travesty at the time, I might not have posted then as I don't post often anyway... but it was equally absurd then as it is now. |

Feb-03-12 | | Riverbeast: Every tournament has different formats
Everybody knows the rules going in...If you don't like it, don't play in the tournament Hou said herself that she doesn't have a preference, that players should prove themselves the best at all formats I'm guessing she probably doesn't focus on blitz nearly as much as her classical game....Unless she plays on ICC or playchess under an anonymous handle? Next time she plays in a tournament with a blitz playoff, maybe she should practice with some more blitz games.... |
Feb-03-12 | | Ezzy: 'At the end of the day' it's a great tournament and attracts very strong players, male and female. The organisers should be commended rather than criticised. (So I'm not going to anymore) People travel from all over the world for these tournaments, so there should be good prizes for most. The organisers have done a fantastic job to make it one of the worlds premier opens. |
Feb-03-12 | | Riverbeast: I would like to play in this thing!
A guy I know (won't mention his name) played in the Open, and got to play three Super GMs |
Feb-03-12 | | frogbert: riverbeast, i'm not really arguing anyone, neither strawmans nor anybody else. i'm just pulling a few legs, for fun. :o) |

Feb-03-12 | | waustad: <ezzy> Short also won the Commonwealth prize, so he won the most. |
Feb-04-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Short wins! Yea. |
Feb-04-12 | | Ezzy: <waustad: <ezzy> Short also won the Commonwealth prize, so he won the most.> Yes, I just heard that. As an ex president of the Commonwealth Chess Fedeation, perhaps he deserves it. Or at least donate the money back to the Commonwealth Chess Federation. Can't see him doing that though :-) Nigel with the Gibralter Masters Trophy.

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Yifan Hou ... not quite ready to take on the world, not just yet. |
Feb-05-12 | | positionalgenius: Nice to see Adams play well again. |
Feb-05-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: <Feb-05-12 positionalgenius: Nice to see Adams play well again.> I agree with that, Mickey might have a bad tournament now and then, but he is a great player ... and I am a fan of this player. IF YOU ARE A GM ... and someone approaches you ... and says: "Do you want to play my super-computer?" (Hydra) ... I think the wise answer is, "Gee! No thanks!!!" |
Feb-05-12
 | | LIFE Master AJ: CONGRATS to Nigel Short AND Yifan Hou ... both players had a fantastic tournament! (I think that the lady player gained like a thousand points.) |
Feb-06-12 | | Ladolcevita: I just saw a recent live rating chart of top female players in a Chinese chess forum, and I found it really noteworthy that nearly all the female participants in Gibraltar Masters have picked up substantial points(Judit was like one point down, but it is only natural for she's already over 2700,thus less rating benefit compared with other female players). Maybe the gender difference over the chess board is not so significant as many people tend to presume,it is perhaps about something more artificial such as the fact that there are much fewer women chess players, and women players might have to go back to family, have kids and suchlike during the prime when their male counterparts are about to embrace their most splendid phase in career...I mean men and women do have much difference in nature, but I doubt that there is so much that there's only Judit over 2700 and only Yifan and Koneru over 2600... And also my congrats to Short and Yifan!Brilliant performance! |
Feb-06-12 | | The17thPawn: I wonder what Nigel's live rating is after this brilliant result? |
Feb-06-12 | | Ezzy: <The17thPawn: I wonder what Nigel's live rating is after this brilliant result> Nigel Short was rated 2677. He gained 20 Elo points from gibralter, so moves to 2697. |

 | | kingscrusher: I used my last Chessbase radio show to check out some of Nigel Short's wins in this tournament: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOpw...
Cheers, K |
Dec-27-12 | | waustad: With 5 2700+ players this year, Short may find it difficult to repeat, since he is the 9th highest rated player. Here is the list of players for the 2013 edition: http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c...
It promises to be a fun event to watch. |
Dec-27-12 | | Blunderdome: I hope they are still adding players. Yifan isn't signed up yet. |
Dec-28-12 | | Refused: <Blunderdome: I hope they are still adding players. Yifan isn't signed up yet.> Yifan plays in Wijk A in 2013. Assuming she can't be in two places at the same time, she won't play Tradewise in 2013. Wijk starts January 12th and lasts till January 27th.
Tradewise Gibraltar starts January 20th and ends January 31st. |
Dec-28-12
 | | perfidious: Maybe they'll add <Blunderdome> to Tradewise. |
Dec-28-12 | | Blunderdome: Maybe they'll add me to Wijk :P |
Dec-28-12
 | | perfidious: <Blunderdome> But which section? That is the question which has plagued the sages of the ages. |
Dec-28-12 | | Blunderdome: I always thought there should be a "perfidious" section. I'd play in that one. |
Dec-28-12 | | waustad: Yes, I'm looking to travel during a Tata rest day before Gibtel starts. I haven't tried following European chess from the West Coast much. I may just see games later more than usual. I may also just say &%$# it and go walk around because it isn't snowing/cold/ugly out. |
