SUSAN POLGAR
(born Apr-19-1969, 56 years old) Hungary
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

GM (and WIM) Zsuzsa (Susan) Polgár was born in Budapest, Hungary, and along with her two younger sisters, Judit Polgar and Sofia Polgar, she was taught chess by her father, Laszlo Polgár. By 1984 she became the top-rated woman chess player in the world. Later that year, FIDE, in a controversial decision, granted 100 rating points to every female player except Zsuzsa.

In 1991, Susan achieved the men's grandmaster title, and later that year, her sister Judit Polgar earned the title as well. She is a FIDE Senior Trainer. In 1996, Susan won the Women's World Championship, but refused to defend her title in 1999 against Jun Xie, because she believed the conditions were unfair. In 2004 she competed in the 36th Chess Olympiad, winning gold medals for points and for the highest performance rating. In total, she has won ten Olympiad medals during her career, and has never lost a single game in any Olympiad. Her highest-ever FIDE rating (2577) was achieved on the January 2005 list. This list also returned her to her position as the number one active female player in the world. In 2005, she broke Andrew D Martin 's 2004 world record by playing 326 opponents in a simultaneous exhibition, with a 309 wins, 14 draws and 3 losses for a 96.93% result.* This record stood for 5 years before being broken by Kiril Georgiev.

Susan lived for many years in New York City, where she ran the Polgár Chess Center (http://www.polgarchess.com). She also resided in Lubbock, Texas, where she served as coach to the Texas Tech University chess team - but has since moved to the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. She is one of the best-selling chess authors worldwide, and she speaks seven languages fluently. She posts at Chessgames as User: Susan Polgar. She is the mother of National Master Tom Polgar-Shutzman.

Jul-19-05  like a GM: <Susan Polgar> Q: I was wondering if talking to Bobby Fischer gave you the chance to shape an opinion about his personality. I mean, did you get the impression that he is an interesting and intelligent person or that he is just a weird chess genius?

Susan Polgar: <like a GM> Bobby is normal and cordial when he is in a regular environment.

However, when he talked about those few issues, he became a completely different person.

I tried very hard to change his views. I succeeded in a few but not with most.

Jul-20-05  humanehuman: As I've heard it, the "Fischer rule" is that anyone who goes public with his private thoughts, activities, is immediately on his "I-don't-know-you list."

I remember seeing a photo somewhere of a young Susan P playing skittles or blitz with John Nunn. Also, in a book about the Polgar sisters, a british WGM wrote about how the three Polgar girls were eating up their young Brit counterparts, winning a series of games, until J Nunn logically started playing closed positions against them (Judit?) to play away from their stregth, tactical play, and started to win games.

This is perhaps a silly notion Susan, but I was wondering, since Nunn has a doctorate in a science, and Fischer has this well-publicised high I.Q., is there anything about them that you felt made them seem different than the other GMs? Would they or any other players you have met seem to have a strong aptitude for something else besides chess?

Also, does your chess center have some outdoor advertising? A couple of months ago I was walking down Q Blvd, in the 60s, and didnt see your store--are you on a side street, or actually on Queens Boulevard?

Marilyn "not" Savant

A person with a 228 IQ does not make elementary mathematical and arithmetic errors. Let alone allow circular reasoning and faulty logic to dictate their deductions and conclusions.

You are a UNIQUE human being Ms Polgar, but you are out of your bailiwick on this one:

http://www.wiskit.com/marilyn.html

http://www.mjyoung.net/misc/doors.htm

The above two URLs give some examples that Ms Savant refuses to acknowledge, let alone, respond to.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -

Vos Savant is acclaimed by the Guinness Records people with a 220 IQ---the highest in history. Since tomorrow will become history when it is yesterday, how can a reputable organization such as Guinness make an outlandish claim.

I know of an individual that has been tested at 23 points lower than Ms Savant. There were problems during the testing period. The individual was given time off and retested. I am not privy to the results of the second session. My information is that no question was missed during the time allotted. Two questions were corrected for erroneous and superficial data. Criteria I have seen, indicate the test range was too low to accurately measure her "brain power".

Her responses were so thorough, however, that another set of more comprehensive examinations were given. This time there was no upper limit or bound on results. Her test was still deemed inconclusive. This is a polite way of saying her scalar number was indenumerable. In layman's terms, the three digit number she would have been given is too high to be afforded credence by any accredited governmental organization.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

While I applaud your inclusion into the PARADE list, as well as your front cover photo, please remember that male and female homo sapiens have more than anatomical differences. I give the following URLs:

http://www.lawpsided.com/halfabrain...

http://www.usaweekend.com/99_issues...

http://www.latimes.com/news/science...

http://www.gender.org.uk/about/07ne...

http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm...

http://www.newshe.com/wsh2004/tapeD...

Now some of the information in these sources may be too technical for some, too amusing for others. One may say that some subject matter as contained herein is inappropriate for this audience. What you can not say at all is that the mere speaking on the female/male brain anomalies is irrelevant.

Ms Savant once made the comment about why she didn't play Chess. Seems she didn't have the patience for such a conclusion to a struggle that takes so long to effect. Marilyn forgot to mention that it takes a disciplined MIND to accomplish satisfying and competent Chess results.

Chessically speaking...

Susan Polgar: <kvcs> I don't think this survey is meant to be serious. I also don't consider myself in the same category as Einstein, Marie Curie or some others.

I am happy that perhaps chess can get some more publicity out of it. That is my number one priority. All personal accolades are secondary. My number one mission is to make chess visible for the mainstream media / audience.

Jul-20-05  Montreal1666: <Susan Polgar:> <<kvcs> I don't think this survey is meant to be serious.>

Susan, We don't take kvcs too seriously either!. No need to worry about what he says.

Jul-20-05  The Bloop: <kvcs>

Those two sites you cited are both give examples of Marilyn being 'wrong' about the game show situation (3 doors, shoud you switch?). The folks who put those sites together don't even state the original question correctly.

The key to the question is the fact that the host, who knows what's behind each door, ALWAYS opens a loser after you make your selection. And the question is, "is it to your advantage to switch doors after this happens?" Anything else is a different question.

Suppose you pick # 1. Here are all of the possibilities:

You pick Door # 1 and "switch"
1 Goat Goat Car (you WIN)
2 Goat Car Goat (you WIN)
3 Car Goat Goat (you LOSE)

You pick Door # 1 and "stay"
1 Goat Goat Car (you LOSE)
2 Goat Car Goat (you LOSE)
3 Car Goat Goat (you WIN)

Knowing that the host ALWAYS opens a losing door, the above grid shows that you win two out of three times that you 'switch' and lose two out of three times you 'stay'.

In other words, if the Car is behind door # 2 OR door # 3, and you switch, you WIN EITHER WAY (because the host will open a losing door every time). If you don't switch, you only win if the Car is behind door #1.

The original question asked "if you were on a game show, and you pick a door, say # 1, then the host opens a losing door, is it THEN to your advantage to switch your choice of doors?"

And again, the answer is "Yes" because if you switch, you will win if the Car is behind # 2 or # 3, but if you 'stay' you only win if the car is behind door # 1.

Jul-20-05  Dick Brain: <The Bloop> That three door problem has been around for 30 years now and is still doing a great job of making intelligent people absolutely certain of the wrong answer. Marylin got it right, of course, but how do we know that she saw that problem for the first time for that column?
Jul-20-05  Dick Brain: <Chess Masterminds> According to TVGuide.com it's on at 1PM, not noon, on PAX in the San Francisco area.
Jul-20-05  The Bloop: <Dick Brain> " That three door problem has been around for 30 years now and is still doing a great job of making intelligent people absolutely certain of the wrong answer. Marylin got it right, of course, but how do we know that she saw that problem for the first time for that column?"

We don't really know that... but the only point I wanted to make with kvcs was that Marilyn was correct... And I explained why...

But you're right, a lot of intelligent people were dead wrong in answering that... I remember when it first appeared in her column, just a few years ago, and it started a national controversy. The entire question and her answer(s) were re-published in one of her books, along with a few dozen letters/emails she received from mathematics teachers and professors from all over the country.

It was not my intent to state that Marilyn was the first person to figure this out, but rather just to point out that she was correct. The people who attempted to 'correct' her on the two web sites mentioned by kvcs didn't even get the original question right, so their entire reasoning was faulty.

Have a good one!

You have this on your USER PROFILE page
[BTW, we at KVCS agree]:

'When one raises the question: "who is the best chess player of our time", the primary focus should be on the quality of the chess games and not on the personality. To me, the best chess players of our time are Fischer and Kasparov. To deny this because they are arrogant, would be very illogical....'

However, because you feel this way, you must agree with us that ARROGANCE and its very manifestation is a gross waste of personal resources...in other words, don't waste your time trying to look good to others, just let your actions [that is, your Chess] speak for you!

Jul-21-05  kvcs: <ZSUZSA POLGAR>

Ms Polgar, We stand by the following statement: "You are a UNIQUE human being ...." This will be further explained later. ______ _______ _______ ______ _______ _______ ________

<OTHERS>

Don't take us, KVCS, seriously huh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then go to The Kibitzer's Cafe and read about LONDON TWO! Is this serious enough for you?!

To all of the readership that is trying to present your points about Marilyn, please remember: she has the highest recorded IQ in the World---in history! AND ALWAYS WILL---the Guinness people have closed this category. Afterall, what is an IQ-point but just a cardinal number!

We do not need to be told about the THREE DOORS problem either. Several of our members are more than familiar with LET'S MAKE A DEAL with Monty Hall. Two grew up watching this TV show. Not only are they familiar with the show, they know HOW Mr Hall presented the DOORS...and no one, as of yet, has given the FULL solution---NO ONE!!!!!!!

The short and sweet of all of this: no matter what "problem" in mathematics you are conversing about, in this case a simple LOGIC one, therein are standard precepts and procedures to follow. Marilyn has a habit of bending these to suit herself. Readers did not understand the following in our post: "A person with a 228 IQ does not make elementary mathematical and arithmetic errors. Let alone allow circular reasoning and faulty logic to dictate their deductions and conclusions."

The two URLs give multitudes of QUESTIONs from Parade readership that Ms Savant has messed up---it is very telling that <Montreal1666> only concentrates on THREE DOORS. No where in our post do we make THREE DOORS the center of Marilyn's-Mistakes.

As for the people at the URL that concentrates on THREE DOORS, <Montreal1666> you have not gone through the whole site. The Website administrator there has corrected himself, answered two individuals, one for and one against, Ms Savant's position. He even went back and showed, in more comprehensive detail, what and why the misunderstanding/s took place. Yet all you concentrate on is PROOVING MARILYN RIGHT! Does she need YOU to prove her right?

As far as Ms Savant is concerned: she pimps out her IQ without helping Mankind constructively. What a waste! Evidently no one read this part of our post: "Ms Savant once made the comment about why she didn't play Chess. Seems she didn't have the patience for such a conclusion to a struggle that takes so long to effect. Marilyn forgot to mention that it takes a disciplined MIND to accomplish satisfying and competent Chess results."

'Regarding all this talk about I.Q., Yoda says, "size not important, judge me by size do you?"'

Yes, all of the following are true:

#1---IQ is an Cardinal number;

#2---a prion is so small it will not be "destroyed" by ordinary incineration [it causes BSE or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, which is in turn, is the primary cause of CJD or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans]; and,

#3---Suitcsase size Atomic weapons make the "BOMB" used in the movie GOLDFINGER laughable. Surely, you remember the best line ever said in a BOND movie---> James is about to be "sliced" from "South" [ouch!] to North by Auric Goldfinger using an industrial RUBY laser when our HERO inquires of what Goldy really wants===> James Bond: "Do you expect me to talk?" Auric Goldfinger: "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to DIE!" James "Bond, James Bond" was portrayed by Sean Connery, and Goldfinger was portrayed by Karl-Gerhart "Gert" Fröbe.
