RAYMOND WEINSTEIN
(born Apr-25-1941, 84 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Raymond Allen Weinstein, born in New York City, was a very promising young player whose chess career was tragically cut short due to mental illness. He won the US Junior Championship in 1958. He played third board for the United States in the 1960 World Student Team Championship, which finished first ahead of the Soviet team. Weinstein shared the gold medal for Board 3 with Aleksander Nikitin of the USSR, each scoring 7.5/10 (75%).

Weinstein also played on Board Six for the 1960 U.S. Olympiad team in Leipzig. He played five times in the U.S. Championship, all before age 23. His best result was a third-place finish at the United States Championship (1960/61), behind Robert James Fischer and William Lombardy. That earned him the International Master title and qualified him for the Interzonal, but he did not play in it. His last tournament was the US Championship (1963/64), where he finished 7th.

Weinstein graduated from Brooklyn College in 1963 with a degree in psychology. It was around this time that he began to manifest symptoms of mental illness, described by some as schizophrenia. In 1964 he killed an elderly roommate after an argument, and since then he has been confined in mental institutions.

  OhioChessFan: I am reminded
Of an old time sucker bet
About the crowd size

You'd guess the crowd as
"Between eighteen and twenty
Thousand people here"

Even though you knew
There were far fewer people
Than that in the stands

So you would then bet
Someone your guess was correct
And they'd take it up

When the attendance
Was announced as eleven
Thousand they'd rejoice

Thinking they had won
But you'd then point out to them
The simple fact that

Eleven thousand
IS in fact between "eighteen"
And "twenty thousand"

  offramp: Sam Sloan say:

"Raymond Weinstein for New York Delegate to the USCF

This year voters in Downstate New York, that is New York City and Long Island, get to vote for up to 14 candidates for New York Delegate, but there are only 13 candidates running.

This means that one write-in candidate will be elected.

I have voted for Raymond Weinstein to fill the empty slot. I hope that you will vote for him too.

Raymond Weinstein has been a life member of the USCF since he was 18 years old, when he won the US Junior Championship. As an active tournament player he defeated every top rated grandmaster is the US with the sole exception of Bobby Fischer. In one of their games, he seemed to have a winning position against Fischer, but he could only draw.

Weinstein has defeated, at one time or another, Reshevsky, Benko, Evans, Robert Byrne and Donald Byrne.

Weinstein is only rated 2415 by the USCF, but that is because ratings have inflated since he was active. By present standards, his rating would be about 2550.

http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMa...

Another important factor is the dedication Raymond Weinstein has for New York State. It so often happens that we elect a delegate and then he deserts us by moving out of New York State. Raymond Weinstein would never do that to us. He has the conviction and the dedication never to leave New York State.

There has long been considerable support for electing Raymond Weinstein. It has often been said that Raymond Weinstein is the one man who can clean out the self-dealers who infect the USCF.

A vote for Raymond Weinstein is a vote for Clean Government.

Vote for Raymond Weinstein today!"

offramp: As I pointed out earlier on the Raymond Allen Weinstein pages, haikus are incredibly pretentious and off-putting. They have few redeeming qualities. They are not funny and they do not rhyme. They therefore appeal only to the unenlightened.

I think that clerihews based on famous players would be funnier, pretenciousniousnesslesser and more concomitant with the exigencies of the chessgames website than haikus.

Possibly a clerihew about a specific player ought to be posted on his or her own page.

But there it is likely to be totally forgotten, or not seen at all.

So they might as well be all posted here.

I am thinking up some already!

[Literally - I do not have any prepared!]
