Apr-17-08  brankat: A sad story indeed. So far. Hopefully there will be a happy end to it.
Apr-17-08  Edwin Meyer: Maybe if we all donated some there will!
Apr-17-08  brankat: <Edwin Meyer> Very true. I'll try to squeeze $50 out of my tiny budget, this coming Monday.
Apr-17-08  Karpova: From the Serbian Chess Federation and the “Svi za Duleta” team members":

<The departure of this chess player, who is in top ten chess players in Serbia, to the European Championship, was unexpectedly canceled due to the cruel game of destiny, when both his kidneys stopped working in the middle of March. His health situation is also difficult because of his blood group O–, which is the reason why none of the family members could be the organ donators.

Yet, there is a solution: a transplantation from an unknown donator, which should be performed in Russia. For this operation, financial assets of 70,000 Euros need to be provided.

We ask you to be part of team which will enable Dušan successful continuation of life by making a payment to one of the following accounts:

Foreign currency account of Komercijalna Banka with codes: SWIFT code: KOBBRSBGNS
IBAN code: RS35205200122725837328

Apr-17-08  Goran: Brankat, thank you for helping.
For some reason, Chessbase revoked the article and Chessvibes did the same after raising certain suspicion. I have no second thoughts and already made a donation. Serbia Chess Federation says that people and clubs from Spain and Montenegro have responded on the same day and GM Svetozar Gligoric also supported the action. List of donations (and counter) will be posted on the website tomorrow or on Monday. I talked to Dusan briefly over the phone, he is filling better than last month when failure occurred and will remain in the hospital for at least another 10 days. He is grateful for the support received from international chess community.
Apr-17-08  Goran: Chessbase will publish the address after the review of EU legislature
Apr-18-08  brankat: <Goran> Thank You for the update Goran.

It is good to see the support our young GM is getting. More importantly, good news is Dusan is feeling better!

I'll stay tuned.

Btw, are You the same Goran from Chessville? :-) If so, You are doing a fine job there. Thank You.

Apr-18-08  ikipemiko: Good luck to Dusan!!
Hope he recovers well!

Chessbase are again a disgrace :(

Apr-18-08  cbpatzer: Thank you <Goran>! Keep us updated please. Did you talk to Dusan today? Is he in Serbia hospital or already in Russia?

Btw. very nice by GM Svetozar Gligoric, a true gentleman.

Apr-20-08  Goran: He will go to Russia after the funding is completed, hopefully June or July. There will be a series of weekend tournaments in Serbia where all entry fees are going to Dusan's fund, and our GMs are taking flyers to the European championship in Plovdiv.

Chess Federation will open a special page with updates. I hope Chessbase will be able to publish the appeal soon, Dusan was very active on Playchess and many people know him there.

Again thank you everyone for your support.

Apr-21-08  stanleys: If you could help GM Dusan Popovic, please do it!!!!!!!!!

Apr-24-08  Goran: Please note that Swift code has been modified. Hopefully, people from abroad won't be having problems with transfer anymore. See http://www.serbiachess.net/2008/dus...

Here is a list of weekend events from where all subscriptions and other donations will go to Dusan's fund:

Čačak (Preljina) - Rapid tournament - 28.04.2008. Sombor - 13th 13th Vojvodina Rapid Championship - 03.05.2008. Beograd, Studentski grad - The Best Blitz tournament - 10.05.2008. Niš - Blitz tournament - 13.05.2008.

Apr-25-08  Goran: GM Alexei Shirov donated to the fund and offered his help and contacts.
Aug-07-08  dumbgai: Apparently Magnus Carlsen will be playing a simul on ICC in order to raise funds for GM Popovic's treatment.

According to the news on ICC, six seats will be offered for a fixed fee of $500 which includes a package of other stuff (like subscription to NIC and the program Junior) and twelve will be put on auction.

Kudos to Carlsen for doing this as a friend and colleague. To my knowledge Magnus will not be receiving any of the money; all of it will go to the fund for GM Popovic's treatment.

Aug-10-08  myschkin: . . .
The simul will start online on Monday, August 11, 2pm U.S. Eastern Daylight Time (7pm in the U.K. (BST) and 8pm in Norway and central Europe (CET).
Nov-08-08  sallom89: how is he doing right now? I just heard about it :S
Nov-14-08  shortsight: Yeah, I just got to know about this too. Hope GM Dusan Popovic is doing fine. I could still remember that he used to frequent the playchess server.

Feb-27-10  Poisonpawns: Happy Birthday Dusan!!
Apr-25-10  Caissanist: From Chessdom: <After two years of waiting and hoping, GM Dušan Popović was finally subjected to kidney transplantation this Wednesday in Moscow, Serbia Chess Federation announced on its website. The surgery preparation lasted for almost three months, as Dušan flew to Moscow in late January this year.

Once again thanks to the international chess community and everyone who had helped collecting the funds necessary for the transplantation. The cause was supported by the World Chess Champion Vishy Anand, Alexei Shirov, former Women World Champion Susan Polgar, American radio personality Howard Stern, Internet Chess Club and Magnus Carlsen, among many other good people.

We wish him quick recovery and express return to chess arena.>
