Mar-05-09  whiteshark: Martha Lorena Fierro Baquero, born in Rhode Island, USA, but from Ecuador is the highest rated Panamerican female chess player. She started playing chess at the age of 14 but she compensated the difficulties of being a latecomer by advancing rapidly.

Her current rating, slightly above the 2400 mark is her best rating ever. In the Chess Olympiad last November in Dresden, she scored 7.5 out of 8 with a rating performance of <2613> and a silver medal on the first board.

She holds the FIDE player titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster and the FIDE training title of FIDE Trainer. She has represented Ecuador in several Chess Olympiads and dominated the domestic championships by winning <all> the titles between 1992-2002.

She won a silver medal in the Yerevan 1996 Chess Olympiad. She has already won the Panamerican Championship 5 times. She was tied for the fourth place in the World Junior Girls Championship in Brazil 1994.

Nov-22-09  jdcapablanca: She is a kind of prodigious ..I remember I played against her in a simultaneous exibition in 1997 in Ecuador in Quito. It began with more than 200 people and aproximatelly after a 6 hours, there were around 100 people left. I was one of them and one of the last standing players of it.I remember that I was in the middle of the game with even chances. Suddenly a man came to my table he watch the position 4 seconds, and in an instant he removed all the pieces and then he ensemble the position in a new board, very fast as a machine. It was something wrong in the posittion, it became better for me, but I couldnt realize were exactly was the mistake, maybe in my inconcient I dint really wanted to remember the true possition. However when Martha came after making the moves in around 100 boards, she inmediattly fixed the possition, in fact the pawn was not doubled on g3 but on f3 !! I was shocked about her memory but most of all, because of her beauty.
