Das Thema schlechthin...<Beherrschung - <Abstandsregel>> (This is the mother of all chess topics to be) http://i3.cpcache.com/product/78566...

"A knight is approximately equal in strength and value to a bishop. The bishop's range is larger, but it is restricted to only half the squares on the board. Since the knight is capable of jumping over obstructing pieces, it is considered to be more valuable when the board is more crowded (closed positions). A knight is best when it has a 'support point' or outpost – a square that acts as relatively sheltered place for it to stop at and exert its strength remotely. On the fourth rank a knight is comparable in power to a bishop, and on the fifth it is often superior to the bishop, and on the sixth rank it can be a decisive advantage. This is assuming that the knight is taking part in the action; a knight on the sixth rank which is not doing anything useful is not a well-placed piece." ♘(Wikipedia article: Knight (chess)) more ♗(Wikipedia article: Bishop (chess)) see also: Wikipedia article: Chess piece relative value

Game Collection: Positional Chess Handbook I

<The bishop pair. <Strong knight. <Bad bishop.>>> How often we see these expressions in chess commentary, in the notes given to master games, or as a passing reference in some instructional text! Yet, do we really understand these concepts? Do you know when to exchange, which pieces to keep on the board, when to head to the endgame? In most of my encounters with these phrases, I see them bandied about as though their meaning were obvious, and should be known by everyone. While the latter is true, their seems to be a dearth of material which fully explains these important strategic ideas. Where can one learn about these concepts?

In Power Chess with Pieces former World Champion Candidate Jan Timman sets about clarifying these and related concepts for the aspiring chessplayer:

<"Of all strategic concepts, that of knight against bad bishop is undoubtedly one of the best-known and most easily recognizes ones. The strong knight dominates the bishop, whose range of action is restricted by one or more of it's own pawns, which have been fixed on the bishop's squares...

Another important strategic given is the bishop-pair. The possession of the bishop pair has not always been regarded as a self-evident advantage...It was only after Wilhelm Steinitz that these insights changed, and in the 20th century the bishop pair is generally regarded as a powerful weapon." <>>

Once if you switch the pieces

the knight is still donitated by the bishop as the knight can not move ahead

With this 'magic' ♗-♘ constellation the ♘ is restricted to move only to one of its four backward squares.

It's also notheworthy - with white to move - that he is able to keep this constellation in another way by moving to b5 or h5:

from Sultan Khan vs G A Thomas, 1933

Of all the 8 squares a central ♘ covers,

4 are forward,
4 are backward,
4 lay starboard,
4 lay portside.

Or 2 in each quadrant. (NE-SE-SW-NW)
