YURI RAZUVAEV
(born Oct-10-1945, died Mar-21-2012, 66 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

IM (1973); GM (1976). Yuri Sergeyevich Razuvayev was born in Moscow just after the end of World War II. He was joint USSR Young Master's Champion in 1971 with Gennady Kuzmin. He had mediocre results in the always-strong USSR Championships, with his best results being just under 50%.

Razuvaev had many fine results in international tournaments, including =1st at Dubna (1979), 1st at Rubinstein Memorial (1979), 1st at Polanica Zdroj 1979, Zala Cup (1981), =1st at Keszthely 1981, =1st at 7th Lloyds Bank Masters Open (1983), =1st at Dortmund (1985), =1st at Jurmala (1987), =1st (with 9 others!) at the Reykjavik Open (1990), =1st at the Palma de Mallorca Open (1991), =1st at Reggio Emilia (1995/96), 1st at San Sebastian 1996, and =1st at the Aosta Valley Open (2000). He played for the Soviet team at the USSR vs. Rest of the World (1984), drawing all four of his games against the much higher rated Robert Huebner.

He was on the FIDE committee involved with the training of coaches and young players, including Alexandra Kosteniuk - who became Women's World Champion - and Evgeny Tomashevsky who went on to win the European Championship. He wrote a successful monograph about Akiba Rubinstein.

Jul-19-09  Karpova: Reggio Emilia 1995/96 was a memorable tournament for him: He shared first place with Dreev and Epishin. He scored +2 -0 =7. They finished ahead of strong players like Beliavsky, Azmaiparashvili, Vaganian and Dautov.

Mar-22-12  wordfunph: <In the autumn of 1958, a little boy stood in the library with thousands of chess books looking through the books and quite unable to make a choice. "Take this one, you won't regret it," suggested a voice, and he was handed The Art of Sacrifice by Spielmann. The voice was David Bronstein's, who in the same library had gone over several games that the boy had played, engraving that day for ever on the memory of future Grandmaster Yury Razuvaev.>

rest in peace, GM Razuvaev..

Mar-21-16  cro777: Rest in piece Chess Academician!

Last year, on the occasion of marking Razuvaev's 70th anniversary, the Russian Chess Federation published the book "Chess Academician Yuri Razuvaev" (Moscow 2015, 384 pp). The book consists of his selected games (deeply annotated), his articles and memoirs of contemporaries.

"His contribution to the treasury of world’s chess culture is huge … Already having won the world title, I loved to call him after any tournament and ask about his impressions. I always appreciated his opinion. Everyone knows that he trained Tomashevsky, made a world champion Kosteniuk, but for me and Gelfand few people know. We listened very carefully to his advice. It is a pity that he left us too early." (From the foreword by Vladimir Kramnik)
