Ziggurat: This swashbuckling Swede is one of the most entertaining players to watch, although his style has mellowed a bit during the last years.
|

Jesuitic Calvinist: I like Hector's play a lot; outside the super-GM level, he is one of the players whose style of play is perhaps a good model. He has that real "bullying" quality that often discomfits his opponents (even those who are strong by the standards of most of us) right from the start of the game.

RisingChamp: He is a Vienna game expert and is renowned for being really agrresive both in his play and with his unusual opening reportoire.

meloncio: I knew Hector in Seville in 80's playing Open tournaments. He was a very original and agressive player. I remember everybody was afraid of him.

fasting: I was told (something like 12-17 years ago?!?)that Hector drawed against Karpov with white first move 1.h4, and that this opening thereafter was called the Hector opening! I really like the story, h4 for "H"ector! but can't find the game no where - wondered if anybody has heard of it?

Volmac: Hector is known as Sweden's bravest player. He actually played 1.h4 in a game against Paulus A Boersma (Dinard Open 1986) and won. The only game against Karpov is Karpov vs Hector, 1990 where Jonny tried the von Hennig-Schara but lost. Bobby Fischer claimed to have studied 1.h4 in-depth to find a solid defence for black. That is the only serious player that I know of that has shown the move any respect. Hector shows great imagination in the openings and most of his pet variations are sound. If there ever were to be a Hector variation I would vote for white in the Winaver French 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qd3 or for black in the Scotch 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Qf6

WMD: <Bobby Fischer claimed to have studied 1.h4 in-depth to find a solid defence for black> Did he?

Volmac: You haven't heard that story? In 1975 the journal Scientific American published an article that reported about a chess-playing computer by the name of MacHic that after lenghty analysis concluded that 1.h4 was the best opening move for white. A quote from the article: Bobby Fischer reportedly said that he had developed an impregnable defense against P-KR4 at the age of 11. He has offered to play it against MacHic provided that arrangments can be made for the computer to play silently and provided that he (Fischer) is guaranteed a win-or-lose payment of $ 25 million. Unfortunately, after checking this up I must admit it is a hoax. I first read this story in a well-known chess journal that apparently took it seriously.

1.h4 Nf6 2.d4 d5 3.Nf3 c5 4.Bg5 (better is 4.dxc5 Qa5+ 5.Nc3) 4...cxd4 5.Bxf6 gxf6 6.Qxd4 Nc6 7.Qa4 Rg8 8.c3 Qb6! 9.Qc2 Bf5 10.Qxf5 Qxb2 11.e3 e6 12.Qxh7 Rg4! (the losing move, black is only slightly worse after 28...Kc8 29.Qb5 Qxb5, but this is really a pretty self-fork of two black pieces by the pawn f2) 29.Kd1 Qxd3 30.Ne5+ Kxd6 31.Nxd3 Rxd3 32.Qb4+ 1-0 (Black loses the rook on g2)A typical Jonny victory! He almost always ends up on top in tactical games. As a side note: There exists an opening with his name, the Hector Gambit (1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 dxe4 4.Ng5) that according to Jonny should be thought of as an improved Budapest Gambit with colors reversed. |

Tranber: I happened to play in Dinard 1986 and witnessed the end of the game. I glanced at the scoresheet to check the opening and couldn't believe my eyes (how cheeky!). It's good to see the moves haven't been lost (I also copied them at the time).

waddayaplay: I thought I'd present you some info about this player that I translated from a tournament broshure presentation (take it for what it is). This info is from May, 2005. J.H. started playing chess at the unusually late age of 14, but developed in a few years to a very strong player. He quickly became a favourite of the club players, combining brilliant attack play with openings such as the Goering Gambit and other 19th century classics. Even openings moves such as 1.h4 occured when J. was in the mood. With the years his openings repertoire has become less wild, but the creativity and aggressive attitude remains. [..] He recently became father for the first time and made come back a few months ago. [..] Hector was raised in Malmö ([Sweden] but lives since many years on the other side of the Sound, in Elsinor [Helsingör].

Hector is extremely popular in Denmark with his enterprising style of playing and his firm belief that playing chess has to be fun! His aggressive style is consistent with the Greek hero Hector from Homers epic tale The Iliad. http://www.chessville.com/UCO/CN/Jo...
