Ragger was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2008. In 2004, he was the European Under-16 Chess Champion and in 2011 he came =5th (6th on tiebreak) in the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), which qualified him for the World Cup (2011), where he faced Russian GM Evgeny Alekseev; he drew the two classical games but lost one and drew one of the rapid game tiebreakers to exit the contest. He won the Vienna Open 2012 ahead of Kiril Dimitrov Georgiev. His strong 7.5/11 result in the European Individual Championships (2013) qualified him for a place in the World Cup (2013), where he defeated Russian GM Ivan Popov in the first round tiebreaker, to progress to the second round where he lost to Nikita Vitiugov. Won the Politiken Cup (2015) with 8/10 on tiebreak after a ten-way tie for first. In August 2015 in Vienna, he lost a match to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by 2.5-3.5. He is also a FIDE Trainer (2015).

Jan-11-16  waustad: There is a lengthy interview with him here (in German):
Jan-28-16  ketchuplover: doing well at gibraltar so far
Jan-31-16  waustad: I remember in a social media chat mentioning this tournament to an Austrian 2100+ player and he'd never heard of it. That won't be the case anymore. Ragger's results are big news at: right now.
Feb-05-16  waustad: Happy b'day! The results were good at Gibraltar, but the missed win in the penultimate round (if the comps are to be believed) took off a little of the luster. I sincerely hope he gets to 2700 soon. He's been so close several time.

TheFocus: Happy birthday, GM Markus Ragger.

Tough luck about Gibraltar.

Feb-13-16  waustad: Today's win over IM Manfred Freitag in the second round of the Graz Open required quite a bit of persistence, taking 100 moves to win with rook and knight versus rook and pawn. Games are available from chess-results.
Feb-14-16  waustad: Markus Ragger is tied for first with Li Chao, with 4/4 in Graz. Tomorrow we'll see a game between these players, the highest rated players in the tournament. Each of the above mentioned players has won a very long endgame and played some interesting chess. Ragger has played one Benko Gambit with black and also an English with a similar strategic queenside pawn sac.
Feb-15-16  waustad: After today's round in Graz, there is a 4 way tie at the top, with Tamas Banusz and Bartosz Socko joining them with 4.5/5. In today's game, a Sicilian Najdorf, Ragger was a pawn up in a rook and pawn endgame that eventually wasn't enough to win.
Feb-26-16  waustad: With today's team tie between Maria Saal and Hohenems, Ragger's team maintains a lead in the Austrian Bundesliga I. Hohenems will be in second place, tied with Jenbach in match points.
Mar-06-16  waustad: With a win today over Jon Ludwig Hammer in the Norway Elite League, he's getting close to 2700 yet again. 2700chess has him at 2697.8. Yet again the Najdorf was good to him.
Mar-30-16  waustad: The final week of the Austrian Bundesliga starts tomorrow. I suspect this very busy player will be there. One problem for a player who plays a lot of team events is that giving a half point "for the good of the team" is a common occurance. Taking a draw in a good position, or even worse, trying to force a win in a drawn position both cost elo often for players who play a lot of team events. Since these are a source of income, probably major, for players slightly below the elite few who get to the invitational RRs, it can make it hard to achieve the sort of rating that gets invitations. It's sort of a "Catch 22" situation. No, I'm not going to start writing Taglish and talking about goldfish ;)
Apr-02-16  waustad: MPÍ Maria Saal continued its dominance in the final weekend for the Austrian Bundesliga. Ragger's live rating is now 2699.6.

Phi: On Friday Ragger was above 2700 on the live list for the first time. Congratulations!
Apr-02-16  Mr. V: Yes!! Finally! And a well-deserved achievement.

Aug-15-16  waustad: Starting tomorrow, he's the top rated player at the Vienna Open. Live games are available here:
Sep-06-16  FICSwoodpusher: Regarding the following game

K Solomon vs M Ragger, 2016

Could someone explain to me why white agreed to a draw when he could have gone for a win against the much higher rated opponent?

At the time this game was finishing off, South Africa had already secured the match by winning two of the other games and drawing 1 (so its not as if it would be a disaster if the South African lost this game due to attempting to go for the win).

Oct-03-16  Daodejing: Ragger has finally made it!

He is ranked 2700 on an official FIDE ranking list.

Oct-08-16  CountryGirl: Well done to Markus Ragger! I am impressed by his relentless rise since 2009. Ragger's games often have some really nice tactics in them. Very enjoyable.
Nov-07-16  waustad: Maria Saal has a tough matchup today against OR Padove. They are outrated by at least 100 elo on every board, in round 2 of the European Club Cup in Novi Sad.
Feb-05-17  waustad: Happy birthday for your first annual 29th!
Apr-09-17  waustad: Ragger's game today against Parligras in the Bundesliga will remind most of us of the Fischer - Byrne, "game of the century."
