This list was researched and compiled by Nechemia Kasimov (User: hemy) and User: jessicafischerqueen. It was <hemy> who discovered and supplied the vast bulk of information deriving from contemporaneous magazine and newspaper sources. This is not a complete list of every event Vladimir Petrov played in, but it covers all of his major tournaments and matches. The list spans a relatively short period from 1924 to 1942 because Petrov was arrested by the NKVD and died in a Soviet gulag in 1943. Petrov won the Latvian Championship four times, and participated in several strong international events. At Kemeri (1937) he shared first with Salomon Flohr and Samuel Reshevsky , ahead of Alexander Alekhine , Paul Keres , Reuben Fine, and Gideon Stahlberg . After the Russian annexation of Latvia in 1940, Petrov played only in Soviet tournaments and began to post more consistent results- results strong enough to suggest that this was a chess master who had been cut down in his prime.

Riga 1924 (29 April) First Latvian Chess Congress/First unofficial Latvian Chess Championship (Reserves Tournament). The Latvian Chess Union did not officially declare the winner of a Latvian Chess Congress masters tournament to be the "Latvian Chess Champion" until the fifth Congress in 1934-1935. In addition, winners of Latvian Chess Congress masters tournaments were not permitted to compete in subsequent Congress masters tournaments until the fifth Congress in 1934, and then in all subsequent Congresses. Informally, most sources will begin counting the Latvian Chess Champions from the winner of the first Latvian Chess Congress- H. Matisons in 1924- but a more historically accurate counting would list the first Latvian Chess Champion as the winner of the Fifth Latvian Chess Congress- F. Apsenieks in 1934-1935.

Riga 1934 (22-31 December) Fifth Latvian Chess Congress/First official Latvian Chess Championship (Fifth Latvian Chess Championship if you include the winners of the first four Latvian Chess Congresses). The Latvian Chess Union declared that from this time forward, the winner of the master's tournament of a Latvian Chess Congress would also be considered the official Latvian Chess Champion. In addition, for the first time previous winners of the Latvian Chess Congress were allowed to compete in subsequent Latvian Chess Congresses, and thus compete for additional official Latvian Championship titles.

Previous Latvian Congress winners <V. Petrovs and F. Apesenieks were therefore admitted to this event, in which they shared 1st place>. They did not compete in a playoff: instead, on Petrovs' suggestion, he conceded victory to Apsenieks in return for a promotion to first board for Latvia in the upcoming Warsaw Olympiad. Riga 1941 (2-23 March) Game Collection: 1st Latvian SSR Chess Congress (Masters Tournament) The event name changed because Latvia had become a republic of the USSR, the "Soviet Socialist Republic of Latvia." The Latvian Chess Union no longer existed as an independent body with the power to regulate Latvian chess events. Alexander Koblenz, the winner of the Masters Tournament of this congress, became the first Latvian SSR Chess Champion (Ninth Latvian Chess Champion if you include the winners of the first seven Latvian Chess Congresses and the "standalone" Latvian Chess Championship in 1934). <Petrovs shared 3rd> with V.
