The international chess festival, held at Montecatini Terme, Italy from July 28th to August 6th 2000, was attended by eight grandmasters in a category XVII event. In November 2009 Vassily placed equal second in the very strong Tal Memorial Tournament in Moscow with an undefeated score of (+2-0=7) .5 behind the winner.
