Nov-13-14 | | PhilFeeley: I love the Liev Schreiber quote from the premiere of the film "Pawn Sacrifice": "I know how to play chess, I just don't know how to win." I can empathize with that! |

 | | MissScarlett: <Finally, there are some interesting historical anecdotes. Spassky (who, incidentally, clearly did quite a bit of work for the book, not merely lend his name to the project) notes (p. 7) that his years as world chess champion were the worst and most stressful of his career, bearing 'enormous responsibility' against the 'scalp hunters' and receiving no support. Keres replied with deep silence when Spassky told him he was lucky never to become world champion...> http://jewishchesshistory.blogspot.... |

 | | HeMateMe: Who knew? Botvinnik was +1 = 8 against Spassky, lifetime. <search "spassky v. botvinnik"> Seems odd, doesn't' it? The younger world champion has no victories against the much older world champion. I suppose MB toned down his playing schedule in the 1960s, but still it seems odd that Spassky has no wins, in 9 games. |

 | | perfidious: <HMM> Botvinnik only experienced a palpable downturn in his results at the very end of his career, in 1969-70, though of course all their games at Leiden 1970 (Botvinnik's last event) were drawn. |

 | | perfidious: <HMM> Looking over the games between the two titleholders, two are clearly duplicates, though I am unsure which Classical Caro-Kann is the correct version. Botvinnik by +1 =6 was the actual lifetime mark. |

Kramnik vs Spassky, 2001 |

Dec-24-14 | | RookFile: Things like that will surprise you. Lasker had a nice record against Alekhine. A lot of people would love to have Petrosian's record against either Kasparov or Karpov. |

May-08-15 | | A.T PhoneHome: Spassky vs E S Stoliar, 1957 <- In my opinion a wonderful game by Spassky! |
|
May-10-15 | | TheFocus: <My forte was the middlegame. I had a good feeling for the critical moments of the play. This undoubtedly compensated for my lack of opening preparation and, possibly, not altogether perfect play in the endgame. In my games things often did not reach the endgame!> - Boris Spassky. |
|
May-10-15 | | TheFocus: <Boris Vasilievich was the only top-class player of his generation who played gambits regularly and without fear ... Over a period of 30 years he did not lose a single game with the King's Gambit, and among those defeated were numerous strong players of all generations, from Averbakh, Bronstein and Fischer, to Seirawan> - Garry Kasparov. |

May-10-15 | | TheFocus: <Often, in the Ruy Lopez, one must be patient, wait and carry on a lengthy and wearisome struggle> - Boris Spassky. |
|
May-11-15 | | TheFocus: <The shortcoming of hanging pawns is that they present a convenient target for attack. As the exchange of men proceeds, their potential strength lessens and during the endgame they turn out, as a rule, to be weak> - Boris Spassky. |
|
May-11-15 | | TheFocus: <The power of hanging pawns is based precisely in their mobility, in their ability to create acute situations instantly> - Boris Spassky. |

May-21-15 | | TheFocus: <In general, what a chess player needs has always been the same, with a love of chess the main requirement. Moreover, it has to be loved naturally, with passion, the way people love art, drawing and music. That passion possesses you and seeps into you. I still look at chess with the eyes of a child> - Boris Spassky, in an interview with Anatoly Samokhvalov. |
|
May-23-15 | | TheFocus: <Nowadays the dynamic element is more important in chess—players more often sacrifice material to obtain dynamic compensation. Of course, such players were in my generation too and they existed before (for example, Alekhine) but then fewer people played like that than now. When I spoke with Alexander Nikitin, he said that players of my generation had a very good understanding of chess, but the game was slower then. Nowadays there is more dynamism in chess, modern players like to take the initiative. Usually they are poor defenders though> - Boris Spassky, interviewed by Alex Baburin for Chess Today in 2000. |

|
May-24-15 | | TheFocus: <Fischer was an individual and so was I. Today, these players have coaches, physicians, cooks, psychologists, and parapsychologists. The championship has become a fight between two big collective farms> - Boris Spassky. |
