Sep-28-10 | | parisattack: <TheFocus: <parisattack> I think you told me before, but what books did he borrow? Did you ever get them back? Were they books to prepare for Spassky?
If so, then maybe we should count you as one of "the team" that helped Bobby bring down the Soviets?
>
Yes, yes! An integral part of the team... I wish, but thank you for the soothing thought <TheFocus>> John Howell who was the patron of Denver Chess at the time (and a splendid gentleman into the bargain) approached me. He knew I collected chess books. Bobby asked for Gligoric/Sokolov Sicilian (Book 1, sadly no further were completed), Larsen's Games and Trifunovic's Grundfelda Indishka Odbrana (sic). I saw and spoke very briefly to Bobby (as in 'Hi' -'Hello' in the presence of John Howell and the other organizer John Harris. I remember Bobby seeming paler than I had thought he would be, a bit taller. Great smile, bright-as-sunlight eyes, slightly uncomfortable body language. He returned Larsen and Gligoric/Sokolov both signed. It was a good trade - I was able to replace Grunfelda easily enough. I had hoped to get Larsen to also sign the Larsen book when he later gave a simul in Denver...but didn't pull it off. I still have the Larsen, sold the G/S not long ago. |
|
Sep-28-10 | | TheFocus: Petar Trifunovic annotated a lot of games in Chess Life in the late 60s - early 70's, maybe beyond. Great annotator and journalist. Well, at least you helped bring down Larsen. (Wink) |

I've been waiting several days to finally hear some "Good News!" :D Posted in Chess♔Vibes (just a few short hours ago): <"Spassky’s condition stable"> » http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/s... It states:
__________________________________
<Russian media report that Boris Spassky is conscious, and his condition is stable. More than a week ago the 10th World Champion suffered from a stroke and was taken to hospital. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports that Boris Spassky is in the ICU Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery in Moscow in a stable condition. RIA Novosti spoke with someone from the health facility, who said: “It is a cardiovascular intensive care unit but his condition is stable and does not cause concern.” Apparently Spassky can move and eat on his own again. More than a week ago Spassky was taken to the hospital in serious condition after suffering from a stroke. He’s reportedly paralyzed on the left side of the body – arm and leg. On October 1, 2006, Spassky also suffered a stroke, during a chess lecture in San Francisco. From this he recovered well. Spassky was in Moscow as a special guest at the Women Blitz Championship, together with Nona Gaprindashvili and others.> The RIA Novosti link: <"Boris Spassky in the Burdenko Institute is stable condition"> » http://sport.rian.ru/sport/20100928... __________________________________
You are all welcome to drop by my chessforum where I've written a special story when visiting and presenting this <"Get Well"> card to former WCC GM Boris Spassky at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital (on Oct 4, 2006). The first part of the inscription reads:
<"To the Champ of Champs...
Our favorite chess hero.
The 10th Chess Champion
of the World...
GM Boris Spassky">

Which also includes many images made of the <"Get Well"> card (and the cute story line included all posted on Sept 24th) made especially for our beloved Boris. :XD My Best Always, - Mal |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <parisattack> You must have quite an interesting collection of chess books. (I have a few myself - several bookcases full of them.) |

Sep-30-10 | | parisattack: <LIFE Master AJ: <parisattack> You must have quite an interesting collection of chess books. (I have a few myself - several bookcases full of them.)> Hi <LIFE Master AJ> I've been collecting since I began to play chess @ 16. Originally I bought from Brandreth, Al Buschke, Uno Linde, Four Continent Books. I never had a world class collection but perhaps 7k volumes at the peak of things. I sold off a lot of foreign material the past few years (long story) and now have about 5k. I have about what I want except for a set of Australian Chess Reviews, a few antiquarian volumes. You mentioned on my old forum you had a couple quite rare volumes...piqued my interest then ran off! :) Frankly I'd trade the books to be a stronger player like you! Your annotations are truely amongst the best I've seen; it is clear you love the game and have dedicated a LOT of time to understanding it, sharing with others. |

I don't even know if I can ever be truly worthy of that kind of praise. So I think I will humbly say: "Thank You" (very much!!!) and move along. I have been collecting chess books my whole life. (I have also been "losing" books my whole life as well, but that's another story!) Of course, we both share the love of the game, this is what I like about this website. Most of the people who are here really DO love the game of chess. Many, like me, have been involved in chess their whole life. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: I just hope Spassky makes a full recovery.
We have lost a lot of chess legends the last few years, we don't need to lose any more. |

We all do hope for that. It sounds as if he is quite a bit better than originally noted. I don't praise often - ask my kids - yours is deserved. It would be great if you could put everything into a book someday! I've lost a few volumes myself, sigh, and not a few I loaned out never to see them again. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <I don't praise often - ask my kids - yours is deserved. It would be great if you could put everything into a book someday!> Thanks again, I have often though of writing a book. As to "losing chess-books," I have lost them to fires, storage facility problems, loans, etc. I have now decided, that except for one or two people that I know I can trust, I am never lending any more books. (No matter what people's intentions are, they almost never seem to return them. Part of the problem has been Navy personnel. They get stationed in Pensacola for training, and often have had to leave suddenly.) |
|
Sep-30-10 | | parisattack: So true. Even the best of friends I have found are not responsible when it comes to returning books. We spent a summer in Pensacola some years back, loved it. Lots of fun, nice restaurants on the Board Walk. Has the BP spill come and gone there? Any more Gulf Breeze 'sitings' these days? |
|
Oct-01-10
 | | HeMateMe: In a big coincidence, I visit that area on most Xmas'. They tell me that the oil has not hit these pristine beaches yet, knock on wood (or better, knock on the thick skulls of BP execs who don't follow written safety procedures). |
|
Oct-01-10 | | MaxxLange: I don't hear that Florida got much visible oil damage from the big BP spill, please inform me if I am wrong |
|
Oct-01-10
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Pensacola - about 2-3 months ago - had whole sections of beach that were covered in oil. The clean-up crews have left ... BP has let most people go. However, people that live out on the beach tell me that if you dig down about a foot, in many places you will still find oil. |
|
Oct-01-10
 | | LIFE Master AJ: At one time, Gulf Breeze was the UFO capital of the world. (Have not heard much action there lately.) I knew one family ... Dad was a Doctor, (MD) Mom was also a professional. After Hurricane Ivan, they lived in a back of church for a while. (I have no idea what happened to them.) Many people got messed over by the insurance companies, not everyone was able to rebuild. DON'T even get me started about BP!! (Hang 'em all, I'd say.) |
|
Oct-01-10
 | | HeMateMe: Where I go, near Panama City, they were spared, or so I heard. But, I'm not really in the loop. Beautiful, uncrowded beaches. Nothing like Miami. |
|
Oct-01-10
 | | LIFE Master AJ: Admittedly, Pensacola was NOT hit as hard as some areas. (One place in Missippi and Louisiana, whole bayous were killed by oil contamination.) We will eventually recover. Ivan did not finish us, neither will BP. |
|
Oct-06-10
 | | HeMateMe: Boris Spassky's condition is not as serious as first reported: "Few weeks ago former World Champion Boris Spassky was urgently hospitalized due to problems with irregular cerebral blood flow. Russian news agencies described his condition as "grave" and "critical". His wife Marina told Kunle Elegbede, International Arbiter from Nigeria, that Boris was able to speak but his left side was paralyzed. She estimated that the recovery would last at least few months. A couple of days later, RIA Novosti informed that Boris was still in the intensive care but his condition was stable and did not cause concern. According to the same source, Boris was already able to walk and eat. Our sources are reporting that last week Boris returned to France for treatment and rehabilitation." If he is already walking, then he apparently doesn't have left side paralysis. Good luck to Boris! |
|
Oct-06-10 | | morphy2010: How old is Boris Spassky? |
|
Oct-06-10
 | | HeMateMe: I think 72, not sure. |
|
Oct-06-10 | | morphy2010: 72, that sounds right because Fischer died at 64 three years ago. |
