 | | Phony Benoni: From the bio: <"...and today the Maroczy Bind (pawns on c4 and e4 against the Sicilian) carries his name."> Does anyone know of a game in which Maroczy used the Maroczy Bind? |
|
Feb-23-09 | | Shams: <Phony Benoni> it's been flagged somewhere on the site-- curiously, he was the one being bound, not the binder. He won the game but was impressed with white's scheme and adapted it. I'll find it later. |

 | | keypusher: <Phony Benoni> Apparently there aren't any! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3... |
|
Feb-23-09 | | Shams: wow, keypusher is right-- that's funny*. From his linked article: "The first game known to feature the Maróczy Bind was Swiderski-Maróczy, Monte Carlo 1904.[1] Oddly, no games are known where Maróczy played it as White." |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Shams, keypusher> I was looking for some yesterday and was surprised not to find any. About the closest I could come was Maroczy vs Nimzowitsch, 1911, which is not a true MB. So the idea should really be known as the Swiderski Squeeze? |
|

 | | keypusher: <Phony Benoni> I couldn't find any examples either -- couldn't bear the shame of having you think I went straight to Wikipedia! He does have a very famous anti-Sicilian win, but I was surprised to see that it's not a Maroczy Bind by any stretch of the imagination. Maroczy vs Euwe, 1923 |

 | | gezafan: If Maroczy had loose skin as described in Kmoch's account he may have lost a great deal of weight in the past. |

 | | GrahamClayton: <Maatalkko>News flash! Maroczy plays a posthumous correspondence game with Korchnoi! http://jeff.zaadz.com/blog/2006/4/d... Here is the game:
http://www.rochadekuppenheim.de/mek...
Any thoughts? Do you think the game is a reasonable guess at how Maroczy would play? Can we upload it to the database and make it Game of the Day sometime? That would be the easiest pun ever. I can think of about four right now.<Mataalkko>,
Here is discussion of this game:

Dec-01-10 | | backrank: It's truly a shame that Maroczy is not in the chessgames srolldown menu for choosing a player (while some much lesser players are there).
He was one of the very strongest players a the beginning of the 20th century, and for some time he was considered as a worthy challenger for the World championship. |
|
Mar-03-11 | | talisman: <backrank> talk to WHITESHARK, he started a MOVEMENT and had Leonid Stein added. He had Bumper Stickers and everything ordered when Chessgames finally capitulated. |

Sep-18-11 | | markwell: His biography on this site should at least mention that he was one of the original group of Grandmasters. |
|
Sep-18-11 | | wordfunph: The first Grandmaster to die was Geza Maroczy.
rest in peace GM Maroczy.. |
|
Sep-18-11 | | parisattack: Fine player he was; one of quite a few past masters who haven't received their fair share of attention. Definitely a world champion level player for a few years. Chessmetrics shows him 1, 2 or 3 from 1900-1910. I've been studying his games on someones 'tip' a few months ago - perhaps it was <wordfunph>. |

Translation: Currently (i. e. 1907) there are 2 players who can lay claim to the honour of playing a match for the Worldchampionship: the German Dr. Tarrasch and the Hungarian Geza Maroczy. |
