  7. Vienna 1908
Held from March 23-April 17, 1908, this and the Prague event in May-June (Game Collection: Prague 1908) were jubilee tournaments commemorating the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. They were probably the two most important tournaments of the year, with player lists that included many of the top players of the time:

Semyon Alapin, Johann Berger, Erich Cohn, Oldrich Duras, Paul Johner, Paul Leonhardt, Geza Maroczy, Frank Marshall, Jacques Mieses, Julius Perlis, Richard Reti, Akiba Rubinstein, Georg Salwe, Carl Schlechter, Rudolf Spielmann, Hugo Suechting, Rudolf Swiderski, Savielly Tartakower, Richard Teichmann, Curt von Bardeleben

Schlechter and Rubinstein started fast with four straight wins, but the latter lost in round 5 and was never able to catch up thereafter. Instead, Maroczy and Duras joined Schlechter in the top group, and though both fell behind in the course of events they were able to finish strong and make up ground on the cruising Schlechter.

There are a few inaccuracies in the database about games from this event. First, it does not appear to be part of the Trebitsch Memorial series which began with Game Collection: Vienna 1907 see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trebit... for a list of tournaments and winners of those events. Also, several of Maroczy's games are listed as having been played in Berlin

I have corrected the round numbers for several Rubinstein games using the round-by-round account given in the tournament book, which is available through Google Books at http://books.google.com/books?id=Jm.... Thanks to <Calli> for providing a cumulative scoretable from a contemporary report in <Wienerschach Zeitung>, which helped clarify some questions.

  8. Vienna 1996
A cozy little Category 18 tournament, featuring these players:

Jaan Ehlvest Boris Gelfand Anatoly Karpov Viktor Korchnoi Vladimir Kramnik Peter Leko Judit Polgar Alexey Shirov Veselin Topalov Artur Yusupov

It was closely fought all the way. The only player to have the sole lead was Topalov, who started with three points in the first four rounds. He promptly lost in round 5, leading to a six-way tie at 3 points (Gelfand, Karpov, Leko, Polgar, Shirov, Topalov), just ½-point ahead of a surging Kramnik who was recovering from losing his first two games.

Round six proved critical, as Gelfand and Topalov won their games from Korchnoi and Shirov to go in front. They then drew the last three rounds (though Kramnik made Topalov sweat a bit in round 8) to tie for first with only Karpov being able to make up the gap and catch them. table[

    10 Korchnoi 0 0 0 ½ ½ 0 ½ ½ ½ X 2.5
    ]table
I'd say my favorite games were Kramnik's sacrificial attack against Ehlvest in round 3, Leko's demolition of Topalov in round 5, the exciting round 8 draw between Korchnoi and Polgar, and Karpov's clutch performance against Shirov in the last round.

  9. Vilnius 1912 (All-Russian Masters)
The All-Russian Masters tournament held in Vilnius (also Vilna or Vilno) from August 19-September 17, 1912 was the last of Akiba Rubinstein's string of consective tournament victories that year. (See also Game Collection: San Sebastian 1912 and Game Collection: Bad Pistyan 1912). The entrants in this double round-robin event were: Semyon Alapin, Alexander Alekhine, Ossip Bernstein, Alexander Flamberg, Grigory Levenfish, Stefan Levitsky, Aron Nimzowitsch, Abram Rabinovich, Akiba Rubinstein, Georg Salwe, and Sergey von Freymann.

Rabinovich dropped out before the end of the first cycle, and the nine games he played did not count in the final results. As a result, each player received in effect four byes, which makes the course of the event difficult to track. In addition, about half of the 99 games played are not available. When a Rubinstein v. Alekhine game cannot be found, you have to be pessimistic about others showing up!

Given these caveats and emptors, it appears that Nimzowitsch took the early lead with 6.5/9 after the first cycle, followed by Bernstein, Flamberg, and Rubinstein on 5.5. However, Nimzowitsch started the second half with a famous loss to Alekhine in round 12 (featuring two noteworthy queen sacrifices that didn't happen), and never recovered his edge.

Rubinstein, who had lost two of his first three games, suffered another reversal at the hands of Freymann in round 13 and trailed Bernstein by a point. However, he promptly won his next four games to take a 1.5 point lead and coast home from there. table[

A fine result for Levitsky, a bad tournament for Alekhine, and whatever was Rubinstein thinking about when he played the bottom three finsihers?

  10. Wageningen 1958
After the Munich Olympiad of 1958 finished in late October, Mikhail Botvinnik made a couple of visits to sites in the West related to his later work in computer engineering. First was a brief trip to a silicon purification plant in Erlangen, Germany. Afterward Botvinnik, Salo Flohr, and their wives travelled to the Netherlands from October 25-November 16 at the invitation of Max Euwe. Botvinnik appeared on a television program about the computers of the day, gave eleven simultaneous exhibitions, and played in a small tournament at the university town of Wageningen.

The tournament was known as the Caltex-Scheepjes tournament after two of the sponsors: Caltex Petroleum Maatschappij (the Dutch branch of the California Texas Oil Corporation) and the Scheepjeswol (a brand of wool) factory from Veenendaal. It was held at the Hotel de Wageningscche Berg, with these participants:

Mikhail Botvinnik, Hans Bouwmeester, Jan Hein Donner, Salomon Flohr, Frits Roessel, Theo van Scheltinga

Botvinnik wasn't in prime form, missing a winning shot against Bouwmeester in round two. Otherwise, the drama came in the last round when Botvinnik and Donner were tied for first going into their last round game. The Dutchman put up some good resistance, but mistakes near the time control allowed Botvinnik a winning combination.

  15. Yopal 1997
A cozy little Category 12 tournament, giving players from Colombia and other Central/South American countries a little taste of competition with the European crowd. Let's see who we've got here:

Walter Arencibia Rodriguez (Cuba); Stuart Conquest (United Kingdom); Nelson Gamboa (Columbia); Gildardo Garcia (Colombia); Peter Leko (Hungary); Tony Miles (United Kingdom); Gilberto Milos (Brazil); Ivan Morovic Fernandez (Chile); Amador Rodriguez (Cuba); Alonso Zapata (Colombia)

The 17-year-old Leko leaps out of this group, and he indeed led from the start. Milos kept up until fellow countryman Gamboa got his only win of the event by defeating Milos in round 8. table[
