Kolty's Single, Double, & TRIPLE KP Attack
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

... with a little help from his friends.

Georges Koltanowski (1903-2000), former elected president of the U.S. Chess Federation, was named the "Dean of American Chess". He directed every U.S. Open from 1947 until the late 1970's, incorporating the Swiss system to tournament play. (I wonder if the grueling schedule of the famous ARVO 1938 tournament that took a toll on the aging stars of chess had something to do with this?)

Koltanowski was born in Antwerp, Belgium and followed in the footsteps of Belgian great Edgar Colle. Koltanowski was on a chess tour overseas when World War II broke out; many of his Polish Jewish relatives did not survive the Holocaust.

Koltanowski lived in San Franciso, California with his wife Leah since 1947. He wrote a daily chess column for the San Francisco Chronicle for 52 years, an estimated 19,000 columns!!! "Kolty" was a popular chess showman, world-record blindfold exhibitionist, writer, and lecturer. His memorable "Knight Tour" demonstrations were truly astonishing!!!

However... he only does the TRIPLE King Pawn Attack while you're blindfolded. You'll never see it coming in time to prevent it.

Thank you Gauer, MEISTERBRAU, etc.
See Openings for White: Italian Game Compiled by swr

P.S. Yep, the Triple KP Attack is a fabrication of Fredthebear that helps serve as a reminder to place quick punch outs in this collection. Kolty did like active piece play -- necessary for quick mop ups in simultaneous play against inferior competition. He also promoted the 1.d4 Colle Opening and occasionally played 1.f4 Bird's Opening. As a player of IM strength, Koltanowski had draws against Tarrasch, Alekhine, and Kotov among others.

No Man Is An Island
By John Donne
1624

John Donne (1572-1631) was an English poet whose time spent as a cleric in the Church of England often influenced the subjects of his poetry. In 1623, Donne suffered a nearly fatal illness, which inspired him to write a book of meditations on pain, health, and sickness called Devotions upon Emergent Occasions. "No Man is an Island" is a famous section of "Meditation XVII" from this book.

Modern Version
No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Early Modern English Version
No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe
is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine
owne were; any mans death diminishes me,
because I am involved in Mankinde;
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

There once was a website named WTHarvey,
Where chess puzzles did daily delay,
The brain-teasers so tough,
They made us all huff and puff,
But solving them brought us great satisfaction today.

There once was a website named WTHarvey
Where chess puzzles were quite aplenty
With knight and rook and pawn
You'll sharpen your brain with a yawn
And become a master of chess entry

There once was a site for chess fun,
Wtharvey.com was the chosen one,
With puzzles galore,
It'll keep you in store,
For hours of brain-teasing, none done.

There once was a website named WTHarvey,
Where chess puzzles were posted daily,
You'd solve them with glee,
And in victory,
You'd feel like a true chess prodigy!

Kansas: Leavenworth
Established in: 1827

Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827 and is still in use today, making it the third-oldest continuously active military base in the US. It was the largest city on the Missouri River during the Civil War, according to the city's official website.

Leavenworth was founded by Colonel Henry Leavenworth in 1827, and once played a vital role as peacemaker between Native American tribes and settlers heading west. It eventually became known as the "jumping point" of the opening of the West.

H.T. Bland. On page 207 of the December 1929 American Chess Bulletin he exalted the challenger in that year's world championship match:

Bravo ‘Bogol', you've shown pluck.
One and all we wish you luck.
Gee, some thought you'd barged between
Other players who'd have been
Less likely straightaway to lose
Just as friend Alekhine might choose;
Undaunted, ‘Bogol', you went in
Believing you'd a chance to win.
Or failing that, to make a fight,
Which you are doing as we write.

The Chess Cafe III – The Spectator>

Quiet in the corner sitting, not a word
He utters, but, his eyes glued on their board,
Where in oblivion the players brood,
He spends his lifetime's dearest hours.
His food
Is cold, his lighted pipe goes slowly out ….
Yet when the game ends, when they talk about
Its ins and outs, its characteristic twist,
He's seen that winning line a master missed!
You ask him for a game – ‘I never play
Myself – hardly a game a year', he'll say.>

John-Shepherd Barron is credited with inventing the first fully-functional ATM (Automated Teller Machine). The first ATM was installed on June 27, 1967, for Barclays Bank in Enfield Town, London. The maximum withdrawal allowed was £10. Today, ATMs are just around the corner in most modern towns.

"Good Bones" by Maggie Smith

Life is short, though I keep this from my children. Life is short, and I've shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I'll keep from my children. The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that's a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real @#$%hole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful.

Play Better Chess
By Leonard Barden

Buyer review: Very well written. Includes chess history, endings, openings, and strategy. I recommend it for anyone being introduced to chess theory and even for others who want to read some good chess writing. The section where he gives practical advice on tournaments, general play and openings is very useful. Was very original at the time it was written. I am surprised there are no newer editions of this book. This is the book I picked up at a library 6 years ago, and I became hooked to chess for a while.

Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition By Irving Chernev

From Simon & Schuster, Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained is Irving Chernev guide to beginners' chess and the basic moves for every player to improve. In this much-loved classic, Irving Chernev explains 33 complete games in detail, telling the reader the reason for every single move. Playing through these games and explanations gives a real insight into the power of the pieces and how to post them most effectively.

IMHO: Chernev's highly instructive book is likely too difficult for the novice (too much information, too challenging). A thorough grounding in chess rules and fundamentals, tactical puzzles, and an understanding of what a combination is and alternative lines of play beforehand will help the reader interpret this wonderful explanation of chess action, move-by-move. "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess", "An Invitation to Chess" by Kenneth Harkness and Irving Chernev are pre-requisites, and perhaps "A Primer of Chess" by Jose R. Capablanca. Follow-up accessories to Logical Chess: Move by Move would include "Power Mates" by Bruce Pandolfini, "Great Short Games of the Chess Masters" by Fred Reinfeld, "Common Sense in Chess (21st Century Edition)" by Emanual Lasker, "The Complete Chessplayer" by Fred Reinfeld, "The Art of the Checkmate" by Georges Renaud and Victor Kahn, "The Macmillan Handbook of Chess" by Fred Reinfeld and I.A. Horowitz, and "Chess Fundamentals" by Jose R. Capablanca, in roughly such order. Don't judge a chess book by its cover; the title does not determine the actual content or degree of difficulty within. Gioachino Greco's short constructed games for instruction against NN are easier to understand for an inexperienced player than Adolph Anderssen's attacking masterpieces with hanging pieces and possible sacrifices strung all about, yet Anderssen's daring beauties are included in many a beginner's book. The author understands and appreciates Anderssen, but the newbie reader will not.

Greco Defence: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Qf6 – A popular opening choice by novice players, it has also been used by players who, according to International Master Gary Lane, "should know better". Also known as the McConnell Defense.

Greco Countergambit: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 – An aggressive but rather dubious choice for Black which often leads to wild and tricky positions. FIDE Master Dennis Monokroussos even goes so far as to describe it as "possibly the worst opening in chess." (FTB's opinion: DM is wrong. The self-exposing 1.f3 is easily the worst opening in chess, as the necessary Nf3 is no longer possible. Some players of the white pieces become confused by the Greco Countergambit.) Also known as the Latvian Gambit.

Calabrese Countergambit: 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 f5

Bishop's Opening, Greco Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.f4

Leading with the (Black) Queen wastes time better spent developing other lesser pieces:

Rome ITA, 1590.??.??, Gioachino Greco vs NN, 1-0. 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Qf6 3. Bc4 Qg6 4. O-O Qxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. Re1 Qf4 7. Rxe5+ Kxf7 8. d4 Qf6 9. Ng5+ Kg6 10. Qd3+ Kh5 11. g4+ 1-0 (11...Kxg4 12.Qh3#, or 11...Kh6 12.Nf7# Double Discovered Checkmate!) 1-0. White demonstrates that it is better to develop the minor pieces (knights and bishops) quickly (both king's knight and king's bishop moved twice, the second time each gaining a tempo by giving check to expose the opposing king to an ongoing attack), and get thy own king castled to safety away from the battle in the center, and target the opponent's royalty. Notice that Black lost due to exposed royalty and poor piece development, an inactive army asleep on their original squares, never having moved any of his minor pieces (knights and bishops) off the back row. Instead, Black should follow Paul Morphy's advice: "Help ALL your pieces to help you."

Black violates opening principles again, and gets exposed by the typical Bxf7+ sacrifice:

Miscellaneous Game, 1590.??.??, Gioachino Greco vs NN, 1-0

1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Bc5 3. Qe2 Qe7 4. f4 Bxg1 Black breaks symmetry to ruin White's privilege of castling 5. Rxg1 exf4 Black is ahead a pawn now, but capturing out releases central control 6. d4 Qh4+ One must always look for flank checks from the opposing queen and know the best response before it actually happens 7. g3 fxg3 8. Rxg3 White prevents a discovered check by advancing his rook, but it stepped into a pin, thus becoming a target 8...Nf6 9. Nc3 Nh5 10. Bxf7+ Kxf7 11. Bg5 Nxg3 The pinned rook was a sitting duck, and the Black knight offers an exchange of queens 12. Qf3+! a wise intermezzo saving the White queen while the Black queen remains en prise. Black pays the price for having exposed royalty. 12...Kg6 13. Bxh4 White has a material advantage and the initiative. The Black king needs more help, more protection. 13...Nh5 14. Qf5+ Kh6 15. Qg5# 1-0 Its often good to get thy queen in close to the opposing king, but she will need some support.

Among Gioachino Greco's games was the first recorded smothered mate:

"The games of Calabrisian Greco can be considered as a great education for beginners and intermediate players; even the most dedicated connoisseur of the board wants to find in its many unknown twists and elegant ways of playing, which enrich or round off his experiences."
