Some S-upermen Post WWII Bet Euw
Compiled by fredthebear

Howard Staunton and Wilhelm Steinitz are over in the t_t players collection. They are joined by hypermodern stars Duncan Suttles and Kevin Spraggett. Some of their games remain in here, but most are over there.

Still yet, the 21st Century guys are playing in the next ballroom over, as the modern player plays rather often compared to the past greats. More recent games remain in here at the bottom.

Otherwise, there are a lot of players whose last names start with the letter "S"! For the record, this is a unisex club. Shirt and shoes required.

The cut-off year is 1950.

Here's a poem a dad wrote:

<ODE TO CHESS

Ten times I charged the grim, foreboding walls

and was pitched into the pit of defeat.

But, heedless of humiliating falls,

I clambered bravely back onto my feet

and charged again, again to be down thrust

onto the scrap heap of people who lose

onto the mound of mortifying dust

whilst my opponent sat without a bruise

upon his pedestal. We changed sides

and fought again, but I was defeated

whilst he with arrogant and haughty strides

took the throne upon which I had been seated.

Ha! Win or lose, it's how you play the game.

But I would like to beat him just the same.>

"I do not know how old I was when I learned to play chess. I could not have been older than eight, because I still have a chessboard on whose side my father inscribed, with a soldering iron, "Saša Hemon 1972." I loved the board more than chess—it was one of the first things I owned. Its materiality was enchanting to me: the smell of burnt wood that lingered long after my father had branded it; the rattle of the thickly varnished pieces inside, the smacking sound they made when I put them down, the board's hollow wooden echo. I can even recall the taste—the queen's tip was pleasantly suckable; the pawns' round heads, not unlike nipples, were sweet. The board is still at our place in Sarajevo, and, even if I haven't played a game on it in decades, it is still my most cherished possession, providing incontrovertible evidence that there once lived a boy who used to be me." ― Aleksandar Hemon, The Book of My Lives

The Man and the Wooden God

A pagan kept a god of wood, –
A sort that never hears,
Though furnished well with ears, –
From which he hoped for wondrous good.
The idol cost the board of three;
So much enriched was he
With vows and offerings vain,
With bullocks garlanded and slain:
No idol ever had, as that,
A kitchen quite so full and fat.
But all this worship at his shrine
Brought not from this same block divine
Inheritance, or hidden mine,
Or luck at play, or any favour.
Nay, more, if any storm whatever
Brewed trouble here or there,
The man was sure to have his share,
And suffer in his purse,
Although the god fared none the worse.
At last, by sheer impatience bold,
The man a crowbar seizes,
His idol breaks in pieces,
And finds it richly stuffed with gold.
"How's this? Have I devoutly treated,"
Says he, "your godship, to be cheated?
Now leave my house, and go your way,
And search for altars where you may.
You're like those natures, dull and gross,
From, which comes nothing but by blows;
The more I gave, the less I got;
I'll now be rich, and you may rot."

Nehemiah 8:10

Checker Board Politics (February 19, 1970)
By Nish Collins

It's a brand new game of checkers, we're just getting in the groove,

Politicians hit the headlines as they make each subtle move.

Picking out a double corner, so they could move in with ease

Earle and Hickman are ex-Liberals Monday they became P.C.'s.

There were very many rumours that this pair were party switchin'

And the first adverse reaction came from P.C.'s Dr. Kitchen.

House Leader Murphy made it clear these gents would hold no rank

They come in as "Buck Privates" was the quotable quote of Ank.

Not to quote him out of context, he invited them to trade,

He only wished to emphasize no deals were being made.

Mr. Earle in prepared statement, as he outlined his position

Said he moved on invitation from the House's Opposition.

He felt he could no longer stay with that power-hungry clan

Its members were just robots - dominated by one man.

Then Mr. Hickman came on strong, responsible felt he

For the welfare of the Province. So he chose to go P.C.

This workable alternative to him made so much sense

He chose a viable party - he's not sitting on the fence.

The moves will come much quicker now, the doubts expressed will be:

"To be Independent Liberal, a P.C. or N.D.P."

When Messrs Earle and Hickman, who have so much on the ball

Choose to opt out of their party, there's handwriting on the wall.

If other men of honor cross the House to be set free,

They may be back in Government, but next time as P.C.

The Shepherd and the Sea

A shepherd, neighbour to the sea,
Lived with his flock contentedly.
His fortune, though but small,
Was safe within his call.
At last some stranded kegs of gold
Him tempted, and his flock he sold,
Turned merchant, and the ocean's waves
Bore all his treasure – to its caves.
Brought back to keeping sheep once more,
But not chief shepherd, as before,
When sheep were his that grazed the shore,
He who, as Corydon or Thyrsis,
Might once have shone in pastoral verses,
Bedecked with rhyme and metre,
Was nothing now but Peter.
But time and toil redeemed in full
Those harmless creatures rich in wool;
And as the lulling winds, one day,
The vessels wafted with a gentle motion,
"Want you," he cried, "more money, Madam Ocean?
Address yourself to some one else, I pray;
You shall not get it out of me!
I know too well your treachery."

This tale's no fiction, but a fact,
Which, by experience backed,
Proves that a single penny,
At present held, and certain,
Is worth five times as many,
Of Hope's, beyond the curtain;
That one should be content with his condition,
And shut his ears to counsels of ambition,
More faithless than the wreck-strown sea, and which Does thousands beggar where it makes one rich, – Inspires the hope of wealth, in glorious forms,
And blasts the same with piracy and storms.

The Chess Cafe I>

Here is the life of Chess! – What's master play But its post-mortem? Scattered far and near
Are business men at leisure, youths and grey
Ancients, immersed in mental rivalry.
Here
How happily I'm come, for here, to me,
All life is peace; my roll and coffee seem
Food of the gods; the games I play and see
Lit with the hazy luminance of a dream.
Though champions still make a toil of chess, We revel in unsound contentedness.>

Exactly four different men have tried
to teach me how to play. I could never
tell the difference between a rook
or bishop, but I knew the horse meant

knight. And that made sense to me,
because a horse is night: soot-hoof
and nostril, dark as a sabled evening
with no stars, bats, or moon blooms.

It's a night in Ohio where a man sleeps
alone one week and the next, the woman
he will eventually marry leans her body
into his for the first time, leans a kind

of faith, too—filled with white crickets
and bouquets of wild carrot. And
the months and the honeyed years
after that will make all the light

and dark squares feel like tiles
for a kitchen they can one day build
together. Every turn, every sacrificial
move—all the decoys, the castling,

the deflections—these will be both
riotous and unruly, the exact opposite
of what she thought she ever wanted
in the endgame of her days.

The Words Of Socrates

A house was built by Socrates
That failed the public taste to please.
Some blamed the inside; some, the out; and all
Agreed that the apartments were too small.
Such rooms for him, the greatest sage of Greece!

"I ask," said he, "no greater bliss
Than real friends to fill even this."
And reason had good Socrates
To think his house too large for these.
A crowd to be your friends will claim,
Till some unhandsome test you bring.
There's nothing plentier than the name;
There's nothing rarer than the thing.

Proverbs of Solomon 1 The Enticement of Sin

8Listen, my son, to your father's instruction,

and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.

9For they are a garland of grace on your head

and a pendant around your neck.

10My son, if sinners entice you,

do not yield to them.

11If they say, "Come along, let us lie in wait for blood,

let us ambush the innocent without cause,

12let us swallow them alive like Sheol,

and whole like those descending into the Pit.

13We will find all manner of precious goods;

we will fill our houses with plunder.

14Throw in your lot with us;

let us all share one purse"—

15my son, do not walk the road with them

or set foot upon their path.

16For their feet run to evil,

and they are swift to shed blood.

17How futile it is to spread the net

where any bird can see it!

18But they lie in wait for their own blood;

they ambush their own lives.

19Such is the fate of all who are greedy,

whose unjust gain takes the lives of its possessors.

Black Rook In Rainy Weather By Sylvia Plath

On the stiff twig up there
Hunches a wet black rook
Arranging and rearranging its feathers in the rain- I do not expect a miracle
Or an accident

To set the sight on fire
In my eye, nor seek
Any more in the desultory weather some design,
But let spotted leaves fall as they fall
Without ceremony, or portent.

Although, I admit, I desire,
Occasionally, some backtalk
From the mute sky, I can't honestly complain:
A certain minor light may still
Lean incandescent

Out of kitchen table or chair
As if a celestial burning took
Possession of the most obtuse objects now and then — Thus hallowing an interval
Otherwise inconsequent

By bestowing largesse, honor
One might say love. At any rate, I now walk
Wary (for it could happen
Even in this dull, ruinous landscape); sceptical Yet politic, ignorant

Of whatever angel any choose to flare
Suddenly at my elbow. I only know that a rook
Ordering its black feathers can so shine
As to seize my senses, haul
My eyelids up, and grant

A brief respite from fear
Of total neutrality. With luck,
Trekking stubborn through this season
Of fatigue, I shall
Patch together a content

Of sorts. Miracles occur.
If you care to call those spasmodic
Tricks of radiance
Miracles. The wait's begun again,
The long wait for the angel,

For that rare, random descent.

She discovered the chemical element polonium in 1898, which she named after her native country Poland. Together with her husband Pierre, the duo announced the existence of another element—radium. In 1903, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work.

The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - 1807-1882

The tide rises, the tide falls,
The twilight darkens, the curlew calls;
Along the sea-sands damp and brown
The traveller hastens toward the town,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

Darkness settles on roofs and walls,
But the sea, the sea in darkness calls;
The little waves, with their soft, white hands,
Efface the footprints in the sands,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls
Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls;
The day returns, but nevermore
Returns the traveller to the shore,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

As he secretly rode his knight out of the castle's gate, still believing that he could escape this inevitable fate, the sky broke open with an array of incredible light. and there smitten to the earth lay nova under his knight. I am who I am and always am, spoke this thundering voice and you, my friend nova, do not at all have another choice but to go forth south and north, west and east
loudly proclaiming the good Word to man and beast. Thus beset by the compelling voice from the broken sky nova set about explaining through the word the how and why. He travelled north and south, west and east never losing aim to let all Caissa's members know: chess is but a game.
