BOBBY FISCHER
(born Mar-09-1943, died Jan-17-2008, 64 years old) United States of America (federation/nationality Iceland)

[what is this?]

Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer was a chess prodigy born on March 9, 1943 in Chicago.

At 13, he won the stunning brilliancy D Byrne vs Fischer, 1956, which Hans Kmoch christened "The Game of the Century." At 14, he won the United States Championship (1957/58), making him the youngest U.S. Champion ever.

Fischer's victory qualified him for the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). He tied for 5th-6th, which sufficed to advance him to the Candidates Tournament to decide the challenger to World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. This made the 15-year-old Fischer the youngest candidate for the World Championship. It also made him the youngest grandmaster ever - a record that stood until Judit Polgar broke it in 1991. At the Bled-Zagreb-Belgrade Candidates (1959), Fischer finished fifth out of eight, the top non-Soviet player.

Fischer won the US Championship all eight times he played, in each case by at least a point. In the US Championship (1963/64) he achieved the only perfect score (11-0) in the history of the tournament.

Fischer won the Stockholm Interzonal (1962) 2½ points ahead of Efim Geller and Tigran Petrosian. This made him a favorite to win the Curacao Candidates (1962), but he only finished fourth, behind Petrosian, Geller, and Paul Keres. In a famous article in Sports Illustrated magazine, The Russians Have Fixed World Chess, he accused the Soviets of cheating: Petrosian, Geller, and Keres had drawn all 12 of the games among themselves at Curacao, most of them quickly.

Because of this, Fischer refused to play in the next Candidates cycle. He did play in the Sousse Interzonal (1967), but left it while leading, because of a scheduling dispute occasioned by Fischer's refusal to play on Saturday, his Sabbath.

He won the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal (1970) by a record 3½ points. The following year, he shocked the chess world by sweeping the Fischer - Taimanov Candidates Quarterfinal (1971) and Fischer - Larsen Candidates Semifinal (1971) by identical 6-0 scores, the only perfect scores in the history of the Candidates Matches.

Fischer also won the first game of the Fischer - Petrosian Candidates Final (1971) against former World Champion Tigran Petrosian, giving him a modern record of 20 consecutive wins at the highest level of competition. He won the match by 6½-2½ to advance to the World Championship match against reigning champion Boris Spassky. This also gave him a FIDE rating of 2785, making him at that time the highest-rated player in history.

In Reykjavik, he won the Spassky - Fischer World Championship Match (1972) by 12½-8½ to become the 11th World Chess Champion. In 1975, Fischer forfeited his title after FIDE refused to meet his conditions for a World Championship match with Anatoly Karpov. He then virtually disappeared from the public eye for nearly 20 years.

After ending his competitive career, he proposed a new variant of chess and a modified chess timing system. His idea of adding a time increment after each move is now standard, and his variant "Fischerandom" (or "Chess960") is gaining in popularity.(2)

Fischer resurfaced in 1992 to play a match against his old rival Spassky in Yugoslavia. Fischer won Fischer - Spassky (1992) 10-5 with 15 draws. The United States considered that Fischer, in playing this match in Yugoslavia, violated U.S. Treasury Department regulations that forbade transacting business with Yugoslavia. Fischer evaded authorities for twelve years until July 13, 2004, when he was arrested in Japan. On March 22, 2005, he was granted Icelandic citizenship and finally freed from Japan. He died of renal failure in Iceland on January 17, 2008 at the age of 64. Gravestone photo: http://www.sjakkfantomet.no/wp-cont....

Fischer's anthology, My 60 Memorable Games, was published in 1969. It has been described as a "classic of objective and painstaking analysis,"1 and is regarded as one of the greats of chess literature.

Joshka: <fedalio> Yes, USPS, it's beautiful. Fits perfectly into a hard binding slip case. If you were ever in a medical library, it looks like the kind of book that would belong there!;-)/Someway, somehow going to have to get "Bobby Fischer Uncensored" now:-) Now if we can only get Mr. DeLucia to make movies!:-) Scorsese with DeLucia for the Fischer Biopic. Starring DiCaprio and Pacino has to have a part somewhere:-) Pacino for Spassky? DiCaprio is only 6' but with inserts he could play 6'2". <TheFocus> You are correct, the books are not numbered unfortunately.

There's FB and mobiles ffs .. jeez ..

Apr-14-14  TheFocus: Yes. The other 2022 were videos he posted.

I don't think he has ever posted anything of worth though.

He has milked that LOL for all it's worth.

perfidious: Y'all are just jealous-anything <harry> posts transcends everything else here, lol.
Apr-15-14  fedalio: Great. Of course no need for DeLucia to enter the film industry-at least in the short term- with Tobey Maguire's biopic of Bobby already being tipped for next years Oscars.

If/when my copy arrives, will post impressions on if it replaces or complements his earlier book on Bobby.

Apr-15-14  Henrik Lindberg: Now the first played game of the secret training match between Fischer and Gligoric has been released. Earlier I think four games were released from De Lucia. This one is a Ruy Lozez Zaitsev (C92) where Fischer as white plays for a win in a long endgame but Gligo defends well:

Joshka: <fedalio> Well I was just trying to give DeLucia a compliment for being so neat, clean, thorough, with his book. Cause it's what I would look for in a movie on Bobby, "attention to detail". Scorsese gives us, at least for me, this attention to the smallest details in his mob movies, "Goodfellas", 'Bronx Tale', 'Casino' and others....with DeLucia also being involved we would get quality, IMHO. Not like the last Fischer movie that was made on the real, real cheap, IMHO. So you think Toby will give us a realistic Bobby?
Apr-15-14  Petrosianic: <TheFocus: Yes. The other 2022 were videos he posted.

Apr-15-14  TheFocus: <So you think Toby will give us a realistic Bobby?>

Obviously, you all have not read the script for <Pawn Sacrifice>, which used to be available on-line, and maybe still is.

It is a hatchet job, and contains dozens of historical mistakes. I hope to meet the writer one day, at which time I will shove his head up his butt, although that may be where he got his ideas for the script.

This movie will be an insult to Bobby's legacy, and to all parties that it portrays.

It portrays Bobby's original teacher Carmine Nigro in a bad light. I sent a copy of the script to Carmine's son, and he said it was very sad that they did not give an accurate portrayal of Bobby or Carmine.

We discussed this subject here before, which you can find by using Search Kibitzing for <Pawn Sacrifice>.

Apr-15-14  Petrosianic: Yeah, but Tobey didn't write the script. For those of us who haven't read it, can you be more specific about what's wrong with it? I mean, I assume that if it came from Hollywood, SOMETHING major is wrong, but it would be nice to know what.

HeMateMe: I like McGuire as the 30 year old Fischer. He's a good actor. If it's a Marty movie, everything will be real.
Apr-15-14  TheFocus: <Petrosianic> <Yeah, but Tobey didn't write the script. For those of us who haven't read it, can you be more specific about what's wrong with it? I mean, I assume that if it came from Hollywood, SOMETHING major is wrong, but it would be nice to know what.>

Go to page 1321 of this Forum and begin reading. It was a horrible script. Typical Hollywood, they just made up stuff and present it as the truth. Sad really. A great movie could be made about his life. Instead, they give us a garbage story.

Apr-15-14  TheFocus: <KKDEREK> The script ends after bobby wins in 1972. Here is the last of the script.

EXT. REYKJAVIK GRAVEYARD
The snow swirls and we may think that we are still in Washington Park. But through the snow we gradually see gravestones and, near to shot, a mechanical digger scratching away at the frozen earth of Iceland.

Cut to black and caption card.
Caption: Bobby Fischer lived in exile, shunned by most of humanity for thirty years. He died in 2008. He chose to be buried in Iceland.

INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE, BROOKLYN - NIGHT
We see snow swirling. We see uncertain lights. We might still be in the graveyard in Iceland, but then, through the swirling snow, Bobby as a young man steps forward with a baseball bat.

We see we are inside an abandoned warehouse. Bobby smashes a window with the baseball bat and takes a breath. Then he arrogantly throws the baseball bat in the air and lets it clatter on the ground. He grins, dusts his hands and walks out of shot, leaving a night time view of Brooklyn through a broken, dirty window.

A caption appears over the shot without fading to black.

Caption: Bobby Fischer was the first and last American chess champion of the world.

Fade to black.
