ETIENNE BACROT
(born Jan-22-1983) France

[what is this?]
Etienne Bacrot was born January 22, 1983 in Picardie, France. He began playing chess at when he was four years old and was already winning junior championships at age 10. His first notable match victory came in 1996 against ex-world champion Vasily Smyslov. He went on to achieve the grandmaster title in March of 1997. At fourteen years and two months of age, he was the youngest GM in history (although this record was to last only until December of that year before Ruslan Ponomariov eclipsed it). Two years later he won the French Championship for the first of five consecutive times.

After several years of international tournaments, Bacrot finally raised his FIDE rating past the 2700 mark in 2004. In January of 2005 he became the first French player ever to enter the overall top ten. His most notable results that year include his joint victory in the 6th Poikovsky Karpov Tournament (2005) and equal second at Dortmund Sparkassen (2005). In 2006, he was less successful, recording minus scores in the Corus, Linares and MTel supertournaments, and he fell back to 18th place in the world rankings at the end of the year.

Nov-02-07   argishti: An incredibly beautiful game won by Bacrot over Ivanchuk!

Congrats to the top french GM!!

Nov-22-07   pawnofdoom: Bacrot continues to have good results against Ivanchuk. He jsut beat Ivanchuk 2-0 in the Blitz Cup, despite the fact that he finished the tournament near last place and Ivanchuk finished first. Bacrot managed a 10-move win over Ivanchuk! (Bacrot vs Ivanchuk, 2007) Unfortunately, the moves are probably all wrong and it probably wan'st 10 moves
Jan-06-08   like a GM: Bacrot will be in the B group at Corus this year. Lol. I wonder, was it his choice? Because van Wely for example has lower rating. In any case, it seems a little sad for him.
Jan-06-08   Jim Bartle: Van Wely is clearly invited as the representative of the host nation. I'd say Bacrot isn't in a bad position playing in the B's--he's a contender there, while he would have been in the lower half in the A group...
Jan-06-08   slomarko: <Van Wely is clearly invited as the representative of the host nation> for a second i thought he got invited thanks to his rating.

<I'd say Bacrot isn't in a bad position playing in the B's--he's a contender there, while he would have been in the lower half in the A group...> but an even better position would be in group C. there he would have no competition.

Jan-06-08   Jim Bartle: I was answering "likeaGM"'s question. I thought that would be clear, but guess not.

Eyal: <Van Wely is clearly invited as the representative of the host nation.>

And the other one who has lower rating than Bacrot, Eljanov, got his place as the winner of Group B last year. In any case, considering recent performances I'd say Cheparinov is the one who really seems to be misplaced at Group B.

Jan-15-08   metatron2: I think Bacrot belongs to these group of players who over-respect the elite players:

Whenever he plays standard professional players (i.e. elo < 2700) he plays very good, energetic, and gets great results.

But when he is invited to elite tournament with players above 2700 he always plays TERRIBLE, incredibly passive and gets very disappointing results.

I cannot explain this other then him over respecting the elite players, since the level of play difference is not that large, and his style cannot change so dramatically all of the sudden just because his opponents play so much better.

Ivanchuk sort of got this problem too in the last 10 yrs: he can cut thru 2600-2700 players like butter but then when he meets the 2700 club, he just starts with an endless draw strik (and few looses) without even trying too much. Again, I can explain this change of attitude only by over respect / fear..

Jan-15-08   unsound: Another explanation would be that the top players are the top players because they're just really difficult to beat.
Jan-16-08   metatron2: yes, but why does he play so passive against them? is that because they are hard to beat or he is just frightened?
Jan-20-08   pawnofdoom: In Corus, Bacrot has scored 3.5/4 with black and gotten all draws with white. That's weird
Jan-24-08   DarthStapler: "In January of 2005 he became the first French player ever to enter the overall top ten" What about Labourdonnais? He was #1 in the world
Feb-02-08   Abejorral: I wonder where is <truth hurts> now.

Bacrot has being playing pasively, waiting for the other player to attack and to propose, i dont feel sad for him, he deserves being 18.

Apr-01-08   mistreaver: Wow he really looks like one of those bullies that sometimes hit me just because i play chess. I would never say he is one of world's elite

Simonkaser: <DarthStapler> Labourdonnais was #1 in the world but not officialy ; he was just seen as the best at the time. Also, there weren't Elo rating at this time.

(Excuse me if you don't understand well I'm French and I'm only 11 and a half.) (I'm also in Etienne's chess club so I know him a little.)

Apr-04-08   ToTheDeath: <mistreaver> Yeah that is one big noggin on Etienne. Imagine what a headbutt from him would feel like.
