May-23-17 | | paavoh: I really got into chess by following the Karpov-Korchnoi matches. So both occupy a special place in my "chess pantheon". Karpov, just a phenomenal player over so many years. Happy birthday! |

May-23-17 | | Imran Iskandar: Happy birthday, Mr. Karpov! |
|
May-23-17 | | gars: Happy BIrthday, Grandmaster Karpov! You are one of the five best chess players of all times. |
|

 | | Richard Taylor: Karpov's games are beautiful to play with many great attacking games and strategical masterpieces incorporated. Also of course with great endgames. His style perhaps like Capablanca and Fischer's in its classical approach but also playing modern style chess. Karpov is a young fellow of only 66. I am his senior of 69! Happy Birthday to Mr. Karpov! |
|
May-23-17 | | Howard: Yes, Karpov was definitely one of the five greatest players who ever lived. No, Carlsen has not surpassed him--yet ! |

 | | eternaloptimist: Happy birthday to the former World Chess Champ & my favorite player! |
|
May-23-17 | | AdolfoAugusto: Happy birthday to my favorite player. Long live to the World Champion Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov! I got into chess during the Karpov era and saw him teach (and bring all the way) Kasparov into the light. Carlsen? I dont doubt he's a great World Champion, and I see a lot of Karpov in him. But in my opinion he's not surpased Karpov, at least not yet. |

 | | eternaloptimist: When I think of Karpov, I think of this game.: Karpov vs Quinteros, 1973
I love the exchange sac (20.♖xd5!) that displaces Quinteros' e♙ to d5 so Karpov can get his attack rolling! The f5 square isn't guarded by that ♙ any longer so he plays 21.♘f5 & his attack just flows after that. I first found out about this game in this book.: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show...
It's 1 of my favorite games of his ever since I bought that book...I believe I bought it when I was in my late teenage years. I played over all the games in that old classic & this has been 1 of my favorite games of his ever since then. Of course many of his victories over Kasparov & korchnoi are memorable as well. |
|
May-23-17
 | | eternaloptimist: Of course Karpov defeated many players stronger than Quinteros so I'm not saying it's 1 of his most impressive victories from that standpoint. I'm just saying I really enjoy the way he played this game & that it really brings back fond memories for me. |
|
May-24-17 | | Howard: You can also read about that Karpov-Quinteros game in the book about the Leningrad and Petropolis interzonals. It's long out of print, but definitely worth getting if you can find it. Found a copy about four years ago at a used bookstore---great book, especially for chess historians. |

 | | paulalbert: I attended an event at the Marshall Chess Club last night where Anatoly was our honored guest. He lectured on a couple interesting games from his career, bishops of opposite colors but rooks still on the board, showing that such positions are anything but drawish. He then answered questions on a number of topics. Among his interesting responses: 1) He was reasonably confident based on both his preparation and form that he had an excellent chance to beat Fischer had their match taken place. 2) Asked who among the top players rated below Magnus Carlsen had the best chance to beat Magnus, he opined they all had a chance but Magnus Carlsen remains clearly stronger than any of the potential challengers. I had met Anatoly before, last time in NY at a fund raiser for his run for Fide president. Last night I got another autograph, and after the official event had a chance for more informal conversation with him as we walked a few blocks together. He is very friendly and charming and clearly ranks among the all time great chess players. |

Aug-16-17 | | russianbluecat: <paulalbert> Thanks for posting. I have always wanted to meet Karpov, but have no idea when and where he will show up. Do you have any advice? |
|
Aug-16-17
 | | paulalbert: <russianbluecat> I presume Anatoly is on some of the social media sites like Facebook and perhaps posts a schedule of his various activities. Anatoly was in NY in conjunction with a chess school and program run by GM MAX Dlughy and his wife for children. Anatoly has his program also for children that started in Lindborg, Kansas. He told me last night it is also in Chicago and another city now. I am not on social media so I cannot check this out. Maybe corresponding with GM Dlugy might also be helpful. By the way, your quote from Karpov on his choice of tactical vs. positional chess was stated similarly last night by Anatoly in response to a question about his chess style. Hope this is helpful. |

Aug-28-17 | | Petrosianic: Does anybody know when was the last time Karpov was over 2700? The FIDE Rating Card only goes back to 2000, and he was in the 2690's then, but he doesn't show up over 2700 in any list after that. |
|
Aug-28-17 | | Howard: According to the olimpbase website, Karpov's last 2700+ rating was in July, 1999. Granted, his rating on the next list, in January, 2000 was barely below 2700 but not quite "there". |

Very impressive indeed. How many big tournaments has won Anatoly Karpov during his career? |
