Favorite Pieces* of Fredthebear's Chess Art ! !
Compiled by melville93

This old photo belongs in my favorites: https://images.chesscomfiles.com/pr...

Some chess games are sentimental. They made an impression upon Fredthebear once upon a time.

Most of these games bring favor for the unexpected: their daring, unthinkable moves that look crazy, unsound, foolish -- moves that most players would not even contemplate. It could be a thunderbolt out of a clear blue sky, a surprising zwischenzug that refuses to cooperate, knock down-drag out brawls, perhaps a sting in the tail or the bold in-your-face bully implant saying "here I am - take me", burn-the-boats sacrifices to sustain the initiative, or a smashing A-bomb mating combination that arrives on the last sip of fuel.

A few games with uncommon positions, perhaps bizarre, but absent of great combinations are in here.

Favorites are just that, regardless of the stakes of the game or how accurately the opponent played! Favorites are not necessarily technically sound duals rated highly by the experts. Favorites are sentimental, often so because it was one of the early, impressionable games studied in a career of games, perhaps heavily influenced by the author's glowing words or a difficult Irving Chernev chess puzzle that just did not seem to have a solution. Some happen to be chess variants, so the caliber of competition does not matter. Balanced quality of play from both sides is not a factor, although swindles and great escapes certainly have to be taken into account. There's something to be said for creating a game changing passed pawn or a suffocating zugzwang -- restricting pythons that leave the opponent helpless to improve the position are very pretty -- but there won't be many long, drawn out positional battles in here (with all due respect to Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian and Anatoly Karpov, of course).

Some of the all-time great classics have grown a bit tiresome and may not be included due to limitations. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind!

A collection split has occurred. Games of 25 moves or less have been placed in a collection of miniature favorites (of which Fredthebear has an untold number of games roaming in his mind). The short games will remain in this collection until it is near capacity, and then will be deleted to make more room for longer games.

Games are placed in REVERSE ALPHABETICAL ORDER by the winning artist's last name... Z, Y, X, W, V, U, T, S, R, etc. There's no debate of the merits comparing artistry; no such order of blue ribbons numerically.

Site under construction by Fredthebear. Like tasty cheese and a fine wine (aged whiskey if you prefer), this is gonna take awhile, and it's to be savored.

This site is definitely NOT dedicated to Dennis the Menace, who clearly played favorites his whole life.
