Commander John J Adams : " Morbius, what is the Id? "

Dr Edward Morbius : " It's an obsolete term. I'm afraid once used to describe the elementary basis of the subconscious mind. "

Hi, I'm Paul Morten and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I've been playing Chess for over thirty years (and still haven't got it right yet). My father ( Peter Morten ) taught me the moves when I was aged about ten.

I didn't really get "Chess Fever" until the Fischer-Spassky match in Iceland in 1972. My first chess heroes were Spassky, Fischer, Marshall, Alyekhin and Capablanca but with more maturity I'm much more appreciative of Lasker, Chigorin, Niemzowitsch, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Keres, Nezhmetdinov, Petrosian, Kasparov and many others. Collecting chess books since 1972 I now possess a chess library I'm sure any club would be proud of. Many game submissions to the database have been made from these books. Up to 25th September 2015 submissions number 5,883 games (this total will continue to grow with time).

I'm fascinated by Chess History and the players who make it so what follows is a large list of important tournaments played in the 19th and 20th Centuries. These collections have been compiled by a number of members of chessgames.com and I'm extremely grateful to them and thank them for their efforts.

Something of note for future kibitzers

<chessgames.com> <IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT>

<As most devoted Chessgames members know, the Kibitzing areas of Chessgames--like any large internet forum--have had their share of flame wars. Vitriolic exchanges fly back and forth between people who scarcely know each other. Lately, one of them in particular has become very visible, spilling onto pages of all sorts of classic games. This longstanding problem has now proliferated to the extent that nearly every Chessgames member has been exposed to it.

Lately, the Chessgames.com admins have had a flood of complaints, and as a result they've deleted many messages. We decided to start to keep score, and determine exactly which members are the cause of most of our disturbances. Not surprisingly, we found that the same names crop up again and again.

Now we're prepared to take extraordinary measures to try to stamp out this flame war: we have now placed a number of members on kibitzing probation. All of these individuals have been identified as the main participants of this flame war.

There are seven of them (at current count) and all been placed on kibitzing probation for one week, in what we call a "cooling off period". They are as follows: <Colonel Mortimer>, <JoergWalter>, <LIFE Master AJ>, <Nemesistic>, <Robed.Bishop>, <SimonWebbsTiger>, and <TheFocus>.

We hope that when this week is over, some degree of civility is restored.

The primary rule broken by all of these individuals is rule 3, "No personal attacks against other users", the rule tailor-made to discourage flame wars. However, many of the deleted posts were also guilty of rule 1 (obscenity) and rule 3 (spamming/duplicating posts). We are not going to address the infractions on a post-by-post basis, but if you are earnestly confused at our posting policies, contact us at chess@chessgames.com, and we'll be happy to clarify your question.

During this cooling off period, our admins will continue to clean up some of the mess created during the past few months. However, they aren't going to try to bail water out of a leaking boat. If any antagonist tries to revive the flame war during this period, he or she will be placed on kibitzing probation without compunction.

We know that some people will have many more questions, so a list of notes is compiled below. Other questions are best addressed directly to chess@chessgames.com.

• The following individuals were not placed on the list in spite of identified posting violations. They are instead hereby issued warnings: <King Death>, <KKDEREK>, <Rob Lob Law>, and <theagenbiteofinwit>.

• The "cooling off period" extends from 12:00am midnight, Monday, February 27 to 12:00am midnight, Monday, March 5.

• This list is not perfect. There may be one or two people on it who don't deserve to be there. Meanwhile, there are surely people who deserve to be on it, yet aren't mentioned. So it goes.

• If you are on probation and want to communicate to an administrator for any reason, contact chess@chessgames.com. Do NOT create an alternate account for any reason whatsoever.

• If you are on probation and feel a great need to voice your opinion about this matter in public, you have only two sanctioned methods: 1. Post something on your "bio" area, so that people can read it if they choose to pull up your profile page. 2. wait a week.

• If any member attempts to subvert this one week cooling off period by registering a second "sockpuppet" account, or using a sockpuppet account already established, they will be subject to an extended (if not indefinite) probation.

Finally, let us remind everybody that the purpose of this action is not to single out specific members, nor to "make an example" of out anybody, but rather to restore civility and decency to the forums. Please help us accomplish that goal by contributing to a peaceful Chessgames, in whatever way you are inclined.>

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> The results are on the link where the tournament is on either Masters or Qualifiers and you select the option that gives the overall result I'll get the link. But I agree it's not that easy to navigate.

Richard Taylor: You should be able to see the results on the live games link LHS on the NZ Chess site. But the PGNs in my case go down onto a program called Tarrasch, and it is good but I dont know how to put print the games or get it to say Windboard or Fritz - there is a way. But I wait for the next day, although I think I can do it by playing the game over on a program I use called Winboard.

But some times those links don't work I think it also depends on how fast your computer is going and other things. Whether you have the latest Java and an infinite number of tedious things...

But in the old days of course you might not even see any of the games for weeks until the NZ Chess Mag. came out and so on...!

Richard Taylor: Sorry Paul I missed this - but of course we both had a power cut! But I went in. It was the same time. I watched the young Smirnov (Anton) beat Leonard. It was clearly a prepared line that Leonard ran into as in the post mortem the older IM (the father indicated as such). But if Leonard had refused the sac he was probably o.k. otherwise it was the end.

I can see why the father lost quite a few games. He is spending his time preparing his son. Fair enough I suppose. But the young chap was the only player to have a full time second! Good for some!

In any case the joint winners as you will be able to see were Johanssen and Anton Smirnov.

Some interesting games in the Qualifiers also. Hilton Bennett won that. Surprising as he had a lot of draws, but well deserved.

I wasn't hugely impressed by Chandler's 'Chess Centre' as (for one) there is no parking. But they are working on fixing what was once a church before the NZ Champs. Maybe it will be Rolls Royce by then.

Not sure if I'll play, I think I am just about past these long tiring chess games only to be slaughtered by young players and old, but mostly young "trainees" studying chess 10 hours a day...

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> How goes it? I am still thinking about whether to play at Xmas in the NZ Champs (it is open this year, but it is $200 to enter).

I probably will as it might be the last time I can play in an open (NZ Champs) in Auckland.

Benzol: <Richard> Hi, only just seen your message, been looking after Dad. The tournament over the shore at Christmas should be good. Unfortunately I can't play because of work commitments but I'll certainly keep on eye on what's going on and I wish you the best for it if you play. I have a favour to ask. Can you help me to get a picture of myself for my games file here at chessgames?

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> Hope your Dad is o.k. I can probably organize a picture. If I see you at a tournament I usually have a camera or you can call in here. Send a message, I have my phone switched off to avoid certain calls: but I will get the message. The we can arrange a time. Then I can photo you and send to CG.com who will I suppose put it up.

The Merv Morrison is on, I toyed with playing in it but news of it came a bit late. I think I will limit to the NZ Open as it will be interesting.

I mean I will have chances of some interesting play and it wont he as tough as say an A Grade and a bit better than the Major Open as my lowish rating will mean I am a bit more immune to draws or losses...still it will be tough but I think there are 5 players over 2500! So it will be interesting. It is a time filler but I have plenty of time for another holiday...been on holiday since 1987 more or less!

I am not sure if CG.com are putting it up here. It is an open.

You might be able to rev them up on it...I mentioned it twice but no response...

In any case: All the best for the New Year!

Benzol: Good luck tomorrow <Richard>. If you're white you'll probably be facing a Pirc Defence. I'll try to spectate but that wouldn't be until the weekend I would think. My sister wants to see Dad and I up at Uretiti beach sometime in the next few days. It looks like a good field of local players will turn out so I imagine Murray Chandler will be pleased.

Richard Taylor: Thanks Paul. I struck the GM as you now know!

Have a good time at Uretiti (where's that?).

Yes, a large field. He has books for sale but they dont take eftpos or cheques which is bizzare. I think Chandler had taken that too far.

I knew a chap who made (at lest 1 million) working entirely in cash transactions - he was selling and fixing games for computers or in the 80s for Commodores and Amigas etc (he'd been a programmer as an engineer but never got a personal computer just sold games computers, he knew or knows Bob Gibbons - who is the main arbiter by the way - but he wasn't paying tax for about 10 years and his step father potted him. I asked him what he did, and he said, no problem, I made up some paper work for them (the IRD!))

But Chandler's doing well. The church is a beautiful building. But it needs some drastic re-blocking as it slopees toward Mt Victoria!

Richard Taylor: The more significant games for me are those I win and lose against opponents more of my own calibre. My games against Burke, Fan are the best I have played. Yes, the Rasmussen was good but I might have gone down very quickly if he had played something sharper. I think Rasmussen has been a bit out of form in this tournament. Hans Gao had a draw with him. Hans I have known for a long time and is a nice fellow. We have had some good games. Once I beat his Alekhine's Defence after first drawing the previous battle. He improved a lot and most of my games against him more recently I just didn't seem to get into gear against him...

The weather is still beautiful and hot, very hot and humid. Clear skies, as beautiful as a scene from say 'The Drowned World' by J. G. Ballard. It has that strange, almost surreal silent beauty of his dsytopic 'scenes'.

Richard Taylor: Paul, this was an interesting game: we followed book (and the winning of a pawn by taking of f6 and Nxd5 or Qh5 isn't so wonderful but I saw that and thought it a bit early for that - although Gary Lane points it out in his book on the Scotch). Then it got to and interesting ending where I tried to trap his B on f8 and then seeing he was defending I sacrificed the exchange for 2 pawns, but I had the B pair...

Richard Taylor: I missed a win in the ending of that game. Rxf8+ to sac the exchange for 2 pieces was only =
Jan-27-15  crawfb5: You got me thinking about the women's world championship. I dug around a bit and, while many early games are missing, a number of crosstables from early tournaments have survived. I don't think I dug up anything previously unknown, but I'm pulling together what I can find on the early events. Here's what I have so far up to 1950:

Game Collection: women's world championship

I probably will not do game collections for the events where the games are available because it looks like User: gauer already started.

Richard Taylor: Benzol I joined ACC again this year. I've been away from clubs for some time with car troubles. I drew my first game (very interesting game) with Leo Zhang who is quite a sharp junior player, over 2000 rating I think.

Next week I face Don Eade again...

Richard Taylor: I beat Don but this week lost a strange complex game vs. Caroline Yan which means all my new earned rating points are probably down the drain...oh well, see how it goes next Monday.
Mar-02-15  suenteus po 147: <Benzol> Paul, you've been championing to have this tournament collected for years now and it's almost there: Game Collection: USSR Championship 1954 I'm just waiting for one game correction, and maybe a little extra historical info. I knew you'd want to be one of the first to see it.

Benzol: Hi <Richard>, yes I'm still here. :)

Popped in to have a look at the Latvian tournament last weekend and also to see Tony Booth. It was good to see that Alexei Kulashko was playing. He might be a bit rusty because of inactivity but that will pass. Are there any other tournaments coming up soon?
