Commander John J Adams : " Morbius, what is the Id? "

Dr Edward Morbius : " It's an obsolete term. I'm afraid once used to describe the elementary basis of the subconscious mind. "

Hi, I'm Paul Morten and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I've been playing Chess for over thirty years (and still haven't got it right yet). My father ( Peter Morten ) taught me the moves when I was aged about ten.

I didn't really get "Chess Fever" until the Fischer-Spassky match in Iceland in 1972. My first chess heroes were Spassky, Fischer, Marshall, Alyekhin and Capablanca but with more maturity I'm much more appreciative of Lasker, Chigorin, Niemzowitsch, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Keres, Nezhmetdinov, Petrosian, Kasparov and many others. Collecting chess books since 1972 I now possess a chess library I'm sure any club would be proud of. Many game submissions to the database have been made from these books. Up to 25th September 2015 submissions number 5,883 games (this total will continue to grow with time).

I'm fascinated by Chess History and the players who make it so what follows is a large list of important tournaments played in the 19th and 20th Centuries. These collections have been compiled by a number of members of chessgames.com and I'm extremely grateful to them and thank them for their efforts.

Something of note for future kibitzers

<chessgames.com> <IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT>

<As most devoted Chessgames members know, the Kibitzing areas of Chessgames--like any large internet forum--have had their share of flame wars. Vitriolic exchanges fly back and forth between people who scarcely know each other. Lately, one of them in particular has become very visible, spilling onto pages of all sorts of classic games. This longstanding problem has now proliferated to the extent that nearly every Chessgames member has been exposed to it.

Lately, the Chessgames.com admins have had a flood of complaints, and as a result they've deleted many messages. We decided to start to keep score, and determine exactly which members are the cause of most of our disturbances. Not surprisingly, we found that the same names crop up again and again.

Now we're prepared to take extraordinary measures to try to stamp out this flame war: we have now placed a number of members on kibitzing probation. All of these individuals have been identified as the main participants of this flame war.

There are seven of them (at current count) and all been placed on kibitzing probation for one week, in what we call a "cooling off period". They are as follows: <Colonel Mortimer>, <JoergWalter>, <LIFE Master AJ>, <Nemesistic>, <Robed.Bishop>, <SimonWebbsTiger>, and <TheFocus>.

We hope that when this week is over, some degree of civility is restored.

The primary rule broken by all of these individuals is rule 3, "No personal attacks against other users", the rule tailor-made to discourage flame wars. However, many of the deleted posts were also guilty of rule 1 (obscenity) and rule 3 (spamming/duplicating posts). We are not going to address the infractions on a post-by-post basis, but if you are earnestly confused at our posting policies, contact us at chess@chessgames.com, and we'll be happy to clarify your question.

During this cooling off period, our admins will continue to clean up some of the mess created during the past few months. However, they aren't going to try to bail water out of a leaking boat. If any antagonist tries to revive the flame war during this period, he or she will be placed on kibitzing probation without compunction.

We know that some people will have many more questions, so a list of notes is compiled below. Other questions are best addressed directly to chess@chessgames.com.

• The following individuals were not placed on the list in spite of identified posting violations. They are instead hereby issued warnings: <King Death>, <KKDEREK>, <Rob Lob Law>, and <theagenbiteofinwit>.

• The "cooling off period" extends from 12:00am midnight, Monday, February 27 to 12:00am midnight, Monday, March 5.

• This list is not perfect. There may be one or two people on it who don't deserve to be there. Meanwhile, there are surely people who deserve to be on it, yet aren't mentioned. So it goes.

• If you are on probation and want to communicate to an administrator for any reason, contact chess@chessgames.com. Do NOT create an alternate account for any reason whatsoever.

• If you are on probation and feel a great need to voice your opinion about this matter in public, you have only two sanctioned methods: 1. Post something on your "bio" area, so that people can read it if they choose to pull up your profile page. 2. wait a week.

• If any member attempts to subvert this one week cooling off period by registering a second "sockpuppet" account, or using a sockpuppet account already established, they will be subject to an extended (if not indefinite) probation.

Finally, let us remind everybody that the purpose of this action is not to single out specific members, nor to "make an example" of out anybody, but rather to restore civility and decency to the forums. Please help us accomplish that goal by contributing to a peaceful Chessgames, in whatever way you are inclined.>

Richard Taylor: Thanks Paul. I still have some interesting games. Has the admin changed. I know one of the partners tragically died.

I know you experience a lot of delay.

Of course there must be a lot of work running a site such as this especially as we are so interactive here as a gainst say ChessBase which is good but rather shut off. There is another site called chess games I think or something.

But chessgames.com have been pretty good overall considering all the brickbats and moans etc they have to contend with....

By the way Ben Hague took out the Waitakare with 6 wins I think only Ewen Green has done that previously so he picks up an extra $100 which possibly justifies him being a chess widow! He must he doing something right!

Don Eade won the B outright but lost one game so missed the bonus...

I didn't play, busy fixing my fence and roof and and an expensive dental work. Not serious but bloody annoying and costly overall so I stretch things out....Otherwise in reasonable fettle and still struggling at the ACC. I drew a game I should have won then drew one I should have lost, then won one I should have lost if there was a Big Good Fulla up there!

Hope all is well in your camp...

Richard Taylor: In the Autumn Cup neither I nor Bruce Watson have lost a game but Bruce is at the top end and won 4 in a row then drew (Ben escaped) against Ben Hague...

Not sure how long I will keep playing chess but I retain my interest in the interesting and or master games and ideas of chess.

Richard Taylor: Hi <Benzol> others. I have stopped looking at the Rogoff page it is pretty insane on there. You cant say anything of any use on here really about politics or whatever as such as Big Pawn misinterpret. He is some kind of religious fanatic. But it becomes an endless debate.

As to violence and crime throughout the world there seems no solution that I know. I am for strong gun control though that is step one. After that we need to address larger issues. I don't think the recent tragedy at Orlando is what we should focus on there are general problems throughout the world. These are made worse by certain politicians and religious fanatics of whatever ilk and perhaps also things we simply have no control over.

Richard Taylor: Back to chess I am playing in the Autumn cup and haven't lost a game. This Monday I drew with Gorden Morrell. I may have had a winning chance at one stage. As usual there are ironies, I drew a game I should have lost as I got in a cheapo tactic, and drew another game that was or should have been an easy win. Bruce Watson seems to be winning.

Don Eade won the B Grade at Waitakare on Queen's Birthday weekend. Ben Hague took six wins in row to get the prize money and the $100 bonus in the A Grade...

Richard Taylor: I see <perfidious> I think I'll put up games until I have all the relevant ones. I have also loaded the odd thing from games not on as far as I could see (one game for example by Purdy) and I was going to do others. Ones, e.g. that are in opening books, but not listed here etc But that depends if I have a complete score.

In anycase I'll just wait then.

If something is important I'll email the admin. The site seems to have degenerated. I really think that the atmosphere in the US leading into the elections, while it should have little effect, is effecting some people on here. But I might be talking about the "internet effect".

Some of the world events happening are just too complex, and people have ready made solutions to things you know that no politician or anyone really will be able to do anything about. I mean massacres are only the tip of the iceberg and I'm talking about the whole world. All is not well, but we keep playing chess!

I think Paul may not be well or his father but I don't know....But he often doesn't reply on here for a bit.

Come in <Benzol>!

Richard Taylor: Hi <Benzol> I had a cold so didn't play today. I'm in the B Grade ACC Club Champs. In the last tournament I lost one game (to William Li but I beat him in our previous game), but had a lot of draws.

I'm going to play in the third section of the George Trundle Masters. I wasn't intending to but it might be interesting.

I am repairing my fence and want to get back to painting my house.

I've decided to make no comments on this chess site of any political or other nature in anyway...except I might talk to reasonable people like Domdaniel and so on. Big Pawn for example simply rants. I really don't know what is wrong with him. Is the US descending into barbarism? ----ooops a political statement----but I "switched Big Pawn off" mind you he's still ranting.

Oh well, we have a fine spell, and though it's cold it is beautiful weather. It may last. Hope we get more of these.

I hope you and Peter are well enough to grumble at each other!! Peter is a really nice person: you know I miss the days in the 80s and also more recently in this century, playing at HP....if I keep playing chess I might play there.

Keep well as possible these cold days!

Richard Taylor: Hi Benzol it was round one of the George Trundle Masters. There is that tournament of IM and FMs etc, the the Qualifiers (which I have played in twice in the past) and the third stream in which I'm playing.

I played Phillip Mukkattu today and probably should have lost but he took a draw. I didn't prepare for it. Busy with a lot of projects including fixing my fence and want to start painting and repairing my fence.

By the way the George is live each day (all games) so the PGNs will be all easily available if you want to tell chessgames.com altho I suppose apart from the top stream it is a pretty weak tournament...

Maybe there is some intrinsic or historical (!) interest in it....

Richard Taylor: I lost to Punsalam due to a silly error on move 9. (9. Bg5? which I knew was wrong I meant to play 9.Qf3).

So after that it wasn't very good for me. A bit disappointed but I did well for an old fellow.

Richard Taylor: I have two more games uploaded including a short Q sac game against Bob Gibbons in 1979 and a win over Le Brocq who was over 2000 at the time I think but he disappeared from chess as far as I know... They are on my page and my chess forum.

I also analysed that game that you uploaded Copp versus Mrs Kerr from the old Corresp. Mag. that I lent you (it covered 1943 to 44 which almost makes it poignant to read) I was using it as practice for calculation and found a quicker and better win for white but it is a great game to see there.

Nov-02-16  mckmac: <Richard Taylor> I remember Bob Gibbons from back in the ACC '71-'72 Glory Days. Very nice chap.

<Paulus> I'm signing off as < McK Mac > here. Thanks for all your support. I plan on making a comeback as < Mackleson Mc Mac Kellson >. Dubious, I know. Buy you a dronk sometime ...

Benzol: There has been a major earthquake in New Zealand centred around Hanmer Springs in the South Island measuring 7.6 and was felt as far south as Dunedin and as far north as Whangarei. We have been lucky in Auckland but a great many aftershocks are being are happening in the north of the South Island and the south of the North Island. The tsunami threat has been downgraded but the death toll is unknown as yet. The country is suffering major disruption.

Richard Taylor: Hi <Benzol> I was awake the night that earthquake struck in Auckland as you know of course. I had switched on the all night continuous classical music with the timer so no talking. So, some nice guitar music by someone and that's good to relax and then some bloody talking!! Just what I hate, the reason I don't listen to talk back or watch TV or whatever...I thought something had gone wrong. They were raving on about an earthquake and I thought someone or something had somehow switched on the nonsense for the - when was it, 2012? - earthquake in Christchurch. I kept listening and was slowly converted to the idea that there was a general tsunami alert...Then I heard what I thought was (a place North of Auckland) and then I started imagining the Tamaki river (estuary) rising. But being on a hill, I thought, bugger it, I wont wake up my son...Went back to sleep.

Of course the latest earthquake is that John Key has resigned.

How are things your end Paul?

Cheers! Still not decided whether or not to play in The Zonal. I suppose you are unable if you're Dad's still crook, and with work? I might just settle for a look as it is (to be) not far away at the Panmure Lagoon. In the Waipuna Lodge (where I saw it in 2005). It starts 14th Jan. I think a number of the games will be live also.

Richard Taylor: Happy New Year <Benzol>!! It's that time again!! I was kibitzing and nearly forgot!

I joined the Zonal. (Perhaps inadvisedly considering my age and indifferent chess these days...but who knows!!) It starts on the 14th of January. Some of the games will be live. In total, including the womens, about 100+ players already.

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> My regards and concern for your father and you Paul it must be distressing. Thanks for your support. See a comment I made on how I sacrificed my Queen in the last round!!

There was an easier way to win but I couldn't resist it!!
