Commander John J Adams : " Morbius, what is the Id? "

Dr Edward Morbius : " It's an obsolete term. I'm afraid once used to describe the elementary basis of the subconscious mind. "

Hi, I'm Paul Morten and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I've been playing Chess for over thirty years (and still haven't got it right yet). My father ( Peter Morten ) taught me the moves when I was aged about ten.

I didn't really get "Chess Fever" until the Fischer-Spassky match in Iceland in 1972. My first chess heroes were Spassky, Fischer, Marshall, Alyekhin and Capablanca but with more maturity I'm much more appreciative of Lasker, Chigorin, Niemzowitsch, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Keres, Nezhmetdinov, Petrosian, Kasparov and many others. Collecting chess books since 1972 I now possess a chess library I'm sure any club would be proud of. Many game submissions to the database have been made from these books. Up to 25th September 2015 submissions number 5,883 games (this total will continue to grow with time).

I'm fascinated by Chess History and the players who make it so what follows is a large list of important tournaments played in the 19th and 20th Centuries. These collections have been compiled by a number of members of chessgames.com and I'm extremely grateful to them and thank them for their efforts.

Something of note for future kibitzers

<chessgames.com> <IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT>

<As most devoted Chessgames members know, the Kibitzing areas of Chessgames--like any large internet forum--have had their share of flame wars. Vitriolic exchanges fly back and forth between people who scarcely know each other. Lately, one of them in particular has become very visible, spilling onto pages of all sorts of classic games. This longstanding problem has now proliferated to the extent that nearly every Chessgames member has been exposed to it.

Lately, the Chessgames.com admins have had a flood of complaints, and as a result they've deleted many messages. We decided to start to keep score, and determine exactly which members are the cause of most of our disturbances. Not surprisingly, we found that the same names crop up again and again.

Now we're prepared to take extraordinary measures to try to stamp out this flame war: we have now placed a number of members on kibitzing probation. All of these individuals have been identified as the main participants of this flame war.

There are seven of them (at current count) and all been placed on kibitzing probation for one week, in what we call a "cooling off period". They are as follows: <Colonel Mortimer>, <JoergWalter>, <LIFE Master AJ>, <Nemesistic>, <Robed.Bishop>, <SimonWebbsTiger>, and <TheFocus>.

We hope that when this week is over, some degree of civility is restored.

The primary rule broken by all of these individuals is rule 3, "No personal attacks against other users", the rule tailor-made to discourage flame wars. However, many of the deleted posts were also guilty of rule 1 (obscenity) and rule 3 (spamming/duplicating posts). We are not going to address the infractions on a post-by-post basis, but if you are earnestly confused at our posting policies, contact us at chess@chessgames.com, and we'll be happy to clarify your question.

During this cooling off period, our admins will continue to clean up some of the mess created during the past few months. However, they aren't going to try to bail water out of a leaking boat. If any antagonist tries to revive the flame war during this period, he or she will be placed on kibitzing probation without compunction.

We know that some people will have many more questions, so a list of notes is compiled below. Other questions are best addressed directly to chess@chessgames.com.

• The following individuals were not placed on the list in spite of identified posting violations. They are instead hereby issued warnings: <King Death>, <KKDEREK>, <Rob Lob Law>, and <theagenbiteofinwit>.

• The "cooling off period" extends from 12:00am midnight, Monday, February 27 to 12:00am midnight, Monday, March 5.

• This list is not perfect. There may be one or two people on it who don't deserve to be there. Meanwhile, there are surely people who deserve to be on it, yet aren't mentioned. So it goes.

• If you are on probation and want to communicate to an administrator for any reason, contact chess@chessgames.com. Do NOT create an alternate account for any reason whatsoever.

• If you are on probation and feel a great need to voice your opinion about this matter in public, you have only two sanctioned methods: 1. Post something on your "bio" area, so that people can read it if they choose to pull up your profile page. 2. wait a week.

• If any member attempts to subvert this one week cooling off period by registering a second "sockpuppet" account, or using a sockpuppet account already established, they will be subject to an extended (if not indefinite) probation.

Finally, let us remind everybody that the purpose of this action is not to single out specific members, nor to "make an example" of out anybody, but rather to restore civility and decency to the forums. Please help us accomplish that goal by contributing to a peaceful Chessgames, in whatever way you are inclined.>

Richard Taylor: Hi Benzol! Yes, Alexei is at the ACC, a bit rusty as he lost to Steadman and also Bruce Watson who won the Summer Cup (A Grade) as well as the Rapid.

But good to see him, as at one stage I think he was the highest rated NZ player, I think he's an IM.

4 times NZ Champion. I met him once when I was just kind of thinking of getting back to chess, but I didn't then very seriously, in Panmure, he was selling things to make a few bob.

Quite a strong line up and some Aussie players etc More anon...

Richard Taylor: Come in Benzol! I lost to McClarin tonight. Playing Philip Hair tomorrow. I beat him once in a strange game when he essayed the Nimzovich defense:

1. e4 Nc6 etc

Mark Noble who is a correspondence IM or GM (he said he is playing 100 games of corresp. chess. he got his IM before computers etc)

But he stopped once as clearly at his rate of addiction he is playing a lot of chess games!

Richard Taylor: I lost to Philip, missed a possible chance to sac which we both saw but, hmm, spent about 15 minutes pondering it, then retreated a N and all went wrong from there. I also managed to draw an ending with 7 pawns and a R versus 4 pawns and a R which I am sure was won but not so easy as I had two pawn "islands" and one set of doubled pawns...still I had a win. I realise now I had to move my K to protect the weak pawns then slowly advance the others...

McClarin has won 3 in a row. He is very focused. Good on him.

Apr-27-15  Shadout Mapes: Thanks Benzol! I spent a lot of time here back when I was a kid, but sort of lost track of chess as I got older. I've been trying to keep up again recently. I'm not that strong anymore so I mostly lurk :).

Benzol: It has been used before but it always makes me smile when I see todays quote of the the day.

<" Henry won so much at chesse of Louis the King's eldest son [Louis XIV], as hee growing into choller, called him the sonne of a Bastard, and threw the chesse in his face. Henry takes up the Chesse-board, and strake Louis with that force as drew bloud." --- Samuel Daniel, Collection of the Historie of England >

Richard Taylor: Hi <Benzol>. That looks similar tot the English used by Chaucer. If you hear tapes of it is sounds like a quite different language. But it is also sometimes quite beautiful. I used to listen to tapes of some of the Canterbury Tales. 'whan' pronounces the 'wh' and 'hee' is like 'hay' and so on.

Even in Shakespeare's time the sounds of vowels etc were different.

Richard Taylor: Did you know that there are already 6 GMs entered in the NZ Open starting early Jan in 2016? Short is no 1 and I think Gawain Jones is back (with Sue Maroroa who is not playing in the main event but in the Rapid I think)...

Those entered so far:

Richard Taylor: Come in Benzol! I found a box of old things (I was clearing out 3000 books I had for sale at one stage, not, mostly chess books) and I found a box with memorabilia of games in the 60s and 80s etc and some game so mine going back to 1961. So, given time, I will sort out, and possibly post early games.

Also my correspondence games and communication with fellow corresp. players (e.g. I think one fellow was from Finland) and with some NZ Corresp. players in the NZ Champs etc

Other stuff involving some NZ Chess History.

Cheers, RT

Benzol: Hi Richard. Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. The 2016 Championship should be exciting to play in.

It will be good to see some of your early efforts as well as the correspondence games.

Are you following the events in the George Trundle at the ACC at the moment? I might pop along to see it some time later this week.

Richard Taylor: Hi Benzol...I forgot about it there has been so much on! I may play in the Open and the Seniors...Short by the way is giving a simul versus NZ Women players! He's a scallywag for sure!

Be interesting to see him though considering he is still 2600+ I believe and was / is surely one of the great players esp. of the 90s....

Thanks for reminding me re the George, the irony is I knew about it and was talking to Bruce Watson about how Kulashko (?) isn't playing. He has to work I think...I have my daughters PhD graduation coming up and I have been sorting out 3000 odd books I used to sell! Now my son has room in the house and it is less cluttered...not many chess books I am afraid. I like them and use them but I have so many books of lit. I either want or need to read for my writing projects etc

But the George is always interesting.

In the Winter Cup I won 4 games and possibly one draw. Then I lost to Paul Macdonald (I won the last game we played so that means it is 2-1 to him so far! He is very good player.)

Tonight (Monday the 28th Sept.) playing one of the junior players who I beat last game with a KI but may deviate tonight (not sure)...hope to win but a draw will do as she is quite good at the game for sure...Jasmine Zhang.

I beat Leo Zhang who is playing in the Qualifiers as I played away from his Najdorf (wisely as I know he likes tactical stoushes) and I outplayed him...I also lost to Brett Rider after a blunder in a reasonable position.

My rating has slowly increased as I am making fewer blunders (with some exceptions) and at the right moment I take risks (I sacrificed against Caroline Yang and blew open her position and she missed the defence or my clever threat involving pins etc...

So it's all fun and games.

Yes my old games go back to playing Mark Sinclair where I played an interesting sacrifice that won to get second to Chris Evans and we went to Christchurch and I have found all the games I played in that NZ Metropolitan Schools Champs. I thought I had played Nigel Cooper but we were both wrong. We played later in a tournament and he won I think, about 1964 or so....

In about 2 Sundays you could come over and talk chess or look at some games or bring one of your books....Send me a message on FB or I might ph you or you me, leave a message I keep the ph off the hook as I get those annoying calls and "mates" who know I like to sleep in!! Cheers, RT

Richard Taylor: Hi Benzol. I joined the NZ Open. I should let CG.com know as Short et al are playing. I suspect there will be more entries soon as after November there is a $20 surcharge.

I am not sure how I will go as age and lack of consistent practice are problems. Otherwise I will again aim for 50% or so and if I get lucky so be it but I suppose the usual mix of good games and middling and some atrocious ones will happen by me, and my most others in fact!

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> You asked about Caroline Yan. She is quite good, but I was wrong, she isn't coached by Ewen. Nor is Alphaeus. No one knows who coaches him.

How did your Xmas etc go? I saw my family on different days. My grandsons and others. I have 4 grandsons!

I'm playing in the NZ Open: it starts on this coming Saturday at, pass, will have to check the start time! But I think about 1 pm...9 rounds, 6 GMs.

The Major Open has some good players in it also. A lot opted for that, figuring they would lose too many and learn little versus those I am with, and it was cheaper.

My thinking is I can always mutter to who might be interested that in the tourney I played there were many strong GMs and IMs etc But I suspect I will spend most of my time near the bottom tables. I will see.

Hope you are well! Best of the season!

Richard Taylor: Hi Benzol I just submitted my game I played with Genesis Potini in 2005. It will make his page 2 games!

But that's good. The game was a draw, in the Waitakare B, I won that in 2006.

Then I was intrigued by his name, and interested that a group with him had come up from the BOP (could be from Gisborne). I "invented" the method without a computer of combatting the Smith-Morra that he essayed. So it was a draw...

I just watched the movie. It is very good. Very moving, even inspiring.

Benzol: <Richard> I thought the movie was good. There was also a documentary about the film that screened on television a while back. Ewen was one of the people who acted as a consultant on the project.

Richard Taylor: I saw part of the doco, not the full thing. I see the Eastern Knights are still going as a Club. A friend of mine sold his house in Auckland and headed for Gisborne. He paid 1/2 of the Auckland value.

I thought it was good to get it on line here as it is a piece of history and it was a reasonable game.

I also loaded my Q sac against Bob Gibbons I played at the Centenary Tournament in 1978/79.

All the best.

Richard Taylor: I don't want it to be thought (for the record) that I won all my games against Bob Gibbons. We have had varying results in OTB and one Corresp. game and at the moment his rating is higher than mine.

But that game I submitted was one of my early games I played when I re-started chess in 1978.

Richard Taylor: Benzol neither of those games I submitted have appeared. How fast are your submissions processed?

Benzol: <Richard> Not so long ago a number of my submissions were processed but many of them had been submitted months before that. I don't know how long your submissions will take to process. Perhaps you should try asking the admins.
